Exact scaling in the expansion-modification system
This work is devoted to the study of the scaling, and the consequent
power-law behavior, of the correlation function in a mutation-replication model
known as the expansion-modification system. The latter is a biology inspired
random substitution model for the genome evolution, which is defined on a
binary alphabet and depends on a parameter interpreted as a \emph{mutation
probability}. We prove that the time-evolution of this system is such that any
initial measure converges towards a unique stationary one exhibiting decay of
correlations not slower than a power-law. We then prove, for a significant
range of mutation probabilities, that the decay of correlations indeed follows
a power-law with scaling exponent smoothly depending on the mutation
probability. Finally we put forward an argument which allows us to give a
closed expression for the corresponding scaling exponent for all the values of
the mutation probability. Such a scaling exponent turns out to be a piecewise

Linking optical and molecular signatures of dissolved organic matter in the Mediterranean Sea
Original research paperDissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a key role in global biogeochemical cycles and experiences changes in molecular composition as it undergoes processing. In the semi-closed basins of the oligotrophic Mediterranean Sea, these gradual molecular modifications can be observed in close proximity. In order to extend the spatial resolution of information on DOM molecular composition available from ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry in this area, we relate this data to optical (fluorescence and absorption spectroscopy) measurements. Covariance between molecular formulae signal intensities and carbon-specific fluorescence intensities was examined by means of Spearmanâs rank correlations. Fifty two per cent of the assigned molecular formulae were associated with at least one optical parameter, accounting for 70% of the total mass spectrum signal intensity. Furthermore, we obtained significant multiple linear regressions between optical and intensity-weighted molecular indices. The resulting regression equations were used to estimate molecular parameters such as the double bond equivalent, degradation state and occurrence of unsaturated aliphatic compounds from optical measurements. A simple theorem to generate exact black hole solutions
Under certain conditions imposed on the energy-momentum tensor, a theorem
that characterizes a two-parameter family of static and spherically symmetric
solutions to Einstein's field equations (black holes), is proved. A discussion
on the asymptotics, regularity, and the energy conditions is provided. Examples
that include the best known exact solutions within these symmetries are
considered. A trivial extension of the theorem includes the cosmological

Automatic reconstruction of a bacterial regulatory network using Natural Language Processing
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Manual curation of biological databases, an expensive and labor-intensive process, is essential for high quality integrated data. In this paper we report the implementation of a state-of-the-art Natural Language Processing system that creates computer-readable networks of regulatory interactions directly from different collections of abstracts and full-text papers. Our major aim is to understand how automatic annotation using Text-Mining techniques can complement manual curation of biological databases. We implemented a rule-based system to generate networks from different sets of documents dealing with regulation in <it>Escherichia coli </it>K-12.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Performance evaluation is based on the most comprehensive transcriptional regulation database for any organism, the manually-curated RegulonDB, 45% of which we were able to recreate automatically. From our automated analysis we were also able to find some new interactions from papers not already curated, or that were missed in the manual filtering and review of the literature. We also put forward a novel Regulatory Interaction Markup Language better suited than SBML for simultaneously representing data of interest for biologists and text miners.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Manual curation of the output of automatic processing of text is a good way to complement a more detailed review of the literature, either for validating the results of what has been already annotated, or for discovering facts and information that might have been overlooked at the triage or curation stages.</p

Functional upgrading in Chinaâs export processing sector
Functional upgrading occurs when a firm acquires more sophisticated functions within an existing value chain. In this paper, we analyze if there is evidence of this type of upgrading in Chinaâs export processing regime by investigating dynamics in the relative prevalence of Import & Assembly (IA) versus Pure Assembly (PA) processing trade over the period 2000-2013. Firms in both regimes provide similar manufacturing services to foreign companies, but IA firms also conduct the sophisticated tasks of quality control, searching, financing and storing imported materials. Consistent with a trend of functional upgrading, we show that the share of IA trade in total processing trade has increased rapidly during the period 2000-2006, both overall and within product categories. Furthermore, we find that this trend has gone hand in hand with improvements in a sectorâs labor productivity and unit values. Thermal Dileptons at LHC
We predict dilepton invariant-mass spectra for central 5.5 ATeV Pb-Pb
collisions at LHC. Hadronic emission in the low-mass region is calculated using
in-medium spectral functions of light vector mesons within hadronic many-body
theory. In the intermediate-mass region thermal radiation from the Quark-Gluon
Plasma, evaluated perturbatively with hard-thermal loop corrections, takes
over. An important source over the entire mass range are decays of correlated
open-charm hadrons, rendering the nuclear modification of charm and bottom

Measurements of high-energy neutron-induced fission of (nat)Pb and (209)Bi

The cross section ratios of (nat)Pb and (209)Bi relative to (235)U and (238)U were measured using PPAC detectors and a fragment coincidence method that allows us to identify the fission events. The present experiment provides first results for neutron-induced fission up to 1 GeV. Good agreement is found with previous experimental data below 200 MeV. The comparison with proton-induced fission indicates that the limiting regime where neutron-induced and proton-induced fission reach equal cross sections is close to 1 GeV
