Measurements and Simulation Studies of Piezoceramics for Acoustic Particle Detection
Calibration sources are an indispensable tool for all detectors. In acoustic
particle detection the goal of a calibration source is to mimic neutrino
signatures as expected from hadronic cascades. A simple and promising method
for the emulation of neutrino signals are piezo ceramics. We will present
results of measruements and simulations on these piezo ceramics.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Development of Acoustic Sensors for the ANTARES Experiment
In order to study the possibility of acoustic detection of ultra-high energy
neutrinos in water, our group is planning to deploy and operate an array of
acoustic sensors using the ANTARES Neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea.
Therefore, acoustic sensor hardware has to be developed which is both capable
of operation under the hostile conditions of the deep sea and at the same time
provides the high sensitivity necessary to detect the weak pressure signals
resulting from the neutrino's interaction in water. In this paper, two
different approaches to building such sensors, as well as performance studies
in the laboratory and in situ, are presented.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Proceedings of the ARENA 2005 Worksho
Testing Thermo-acoustic Sound Generation in Water with Proton and Laser Beams
Experiments were performed at a proton accelerator and an infrared laser
acility to investigate the sound generation caused by the energy deposition of
pulsed particle and laser beams in water. The beams with an energy range of 1
PeV to 400 PeV per proton beam spill and up to 10 EeV for the laser pulse were
dumped into a water volume and the resulting acoustic signals were recorded
with pressure sensitive sensors. Measurements were performed at varying pulse
energies, sensor positions, beam diameters and temperatures. The data is well
described by simulations based on the thermo-acoustic model. This implies that
the primary mechanism for sound generation by the energy deposition of
particles propagating in water is the local heating of the media giving rise to
an expansion or contraction of the medium resulting in a pressure pulse with
bipolar shape. A possible application of this effect would be the acoustical
detection of neutrinos with energies greater than 1 EeV.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the 1st

Modification of the -Meson Lifetime in Nuclear Matter
The photo production of mesons on the nuclei C, Ca, Nb and Pb has
been measured using the Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector at the ELSA tagged photon
facility in Bonn. The dependence of the meson cross section on the
nuclear mass number has been compared with three different types of models, a
Glauber analysis, a BUU analysis of the Giessen theory group and a calculation
by the Valencia theory group. In all three cases, the inelastic width
is found to be at normal nuclear matter density for an
average 3-momentum of 1.1 GeV/c. In the restframe of the meson, this
inelastic width corresponds to a reduction of the lifetime by
a factor . For the first time, the momentum dependent N
cross section has been extracted from the experiment and is in the range of 70
mb.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
In-medium mass from the reaction
Data on the photoproduction of mesons on nuclei have been
re-analyzed in a search for in-medium modifications. The data were taken with
the Crystal Barrel(CB)/TAPS detector system at the ELSA accelerator facility in
Bonn. First results from the analysis of the data set were published by D.
Trnka et al. in Phys. Rev. Lett 94 (2005) 192303 \cite{david}, claiming a
lowering of the mass in the nuclear medium by 14 at normal nuclear
matter density. The extracted line shape was found to be sensitive to
the background subtraction. For this reason a re-analysis of the same data set
has been initiated and a new method has been developed to reduce the background
and to determine the shape and absolute magnitude of the background directly
from the data. Details of the re-analysis and of the background determination
are described. The signal on the target, extracted in the
re-analysis, does not show a deviation from the corresponding line shape on a
target, measured as reference. The earlier claim of an in-medium mass
shift is thus not confirmed. The sensitivity of the line shape to
different in-medium modification scenarios is discussed.Comment: 13 pages and 11 figures, submitted for publicatio
First observation of in-medium modifications of the omega meson
The photoproduction of omega mesons on nuclei has been investigated using the
Crystal Barrel/TAPS experiment at the ELSA tagged photon facility in Bonn. The
aim is to study possible in-medium modifications of the omega meson via the
reaction A(gamma, omega)X. Results obtained for Nb are compared to a reference
measurement on a liquid hydrogen target. While for recoiling, long-lived mesons
(pi, eta and etaprime), which decay outside of the nucleus, a difference in the
lineshape for the two data samples is not observed, we find a significant
enhancement towards lower masses for omega mesons with low momenta produced on
the Nb target.Comment: Latex, 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted by Phys. Rev. Lett; references

ANTARES search for point-sources of neutrinos using astrophysical catalogs: a likelihood stacking analysis
A search for astrophysical point-like neutrino sources using the data
collected by the ANTARES detector between January 29, 2007 and December 31,
2017 is presented. A likelihood stacking method is used to assess the
significance of an excess of muon neutrinos inducing track-like events in
correlation with the location of a list of possible sources. Different sets of
objects are tested in the analysis: a) a sub-sample of the \textit{Fermi} 3LAC
catalog of blazars, b) a jet-obscured AGN population, c) a sample of soft
gamma-ray selected radio galaxies, d) a star-forming galaxy catalog , and e) a
public sample of 56 very-high-energy track events from the IceCube experiment.
None of the tested sources shows a significant association with the sample of
neutrinos detected by ANTARES. The smallest p-value is obtained for the radio
galaxies catalog with an equal weights hypothesis, with a pre-trial p-value
equivalent to a excess, equivalent to
post-trial.
In addition, the results of a dedicated analysis for the blazar MG3
J225517+2409 are also reported: this source is found to be the most significant
within the \textit{Fermi} 3LAC sample, with 5 ANTARES events located at less
than one degree from the source. This blazar showed evidence of flaring
activity in \textit{Fermi} data, in space-time coincidence with a high-energy
track detected by IceCube. An \emph{a posteriori} significance of for the combination of ANTARES and IceCube data is reported
Photoproduction of mesons on nuclei near the production threshold
The photoproduction of mesons on LH_2, C and Nb has been studied for
incident photon energies from 900 to 1300 MeV using the CB/TAPS detector at
ELSA. The line shape does not show any significant difference between
the LH_2 and the Nb targets. The data are compared with results of transport
calculations that predict a sensitivity of the line shape to in-medium
modifications near the production threshold on a free nucleon of
= 1109 MeV.}Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Search for muon neutrinos from gamma-ray bursts with the ANTARES neutrino telescope using 2008 to 2011 data
9 pages, 8 figures; added Fig. 1 with effective area, updated Fig. 8 (b) according to arXiv:1204.4219 ; Références publication Astron Astrophys 559 (2013) A9International audienceAims. We search for muon neutrinos in coincidence with GRBs with the ANTARES neutrino detector using data from the end of 2007 to 2011. Methods. Expected neutrino fluxes were calculated for each burst individually. The most recent numerical calculations of the spectra using the NeuCosmA code were employed, which include Monte Carlo simulations of the full underlying photohadronic interaction processes. The discovery probability for a selection of 296 GRBs in the given period was optimised using an extended maximum-likelihood strategy. Results. No significant excess over background is found in the data, and 90% confidence level upper limits are placed on the total expected flux according to the model
Search for Spatial Correlations of Neutrinos with Ultra-high-energy Cosmic Rays
For several decades, the origin of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) has been an unsolved question of high-energy astrophysics. One approach for solving this puzzle is to correlate UHECRs with high-energy neutrinos, since neutrinos are a direct probe of hadronic interactions of cosmic rays and are not deflected by magnetic fields. In this paper, we present three different approaches for correlating the arrival directions of neutrinos with the arrival directions of UHECRs. The neutrino data are provided by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and ANTARES, while the UHECR data with energies above âŒ50 EeV are provided by the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array. All experiments provide increased statistics and improved reconstructions with respect to our previous results reported in 2015. The first analysis uses a high-statistics neutrino sample optimized for point-source searches to search for excesses of neutrino clustering in the vicinity of UHECR directions. The second analysis searches for an excess of UHECRs in the direction of the highest-energy neutrinos. The third analysis searches for an excess of pairs of UHECRs and highest-energy neutrinos on different angular scales. None of the analyses have found a significant excess, and previously reported overfluctuations are reduced in significance. Based on these results, we further constrain the neutrino flux spatially correlated with UHECRs
