    Quality methamodel oriented towards a management for territorial development

    El presente trabajo trata sobre la elaboración de un metamodelo orientado a la implantación y evaluación de calidad en un territorio determinado con miras a una gestión para su desarrollo. Aludir al concepto “meta" remite a la intención y objetivo de constituir una idea abarcativa, contenedora, comprensiva y superadora del objeto de construcción, en este caso de un modelo, atendiendo a las diversidades, diferencias y particularidades de los territorios en los cuales pudiera implantarse y evaluarse calidad, e incluso las interpretaciones y variaciones que respecto al concepto de calidad pueden asumirse en función del contexto socio-cultural que lo referencie. Para ello, se adopta como antecedente principal el Premio Nacional a la Calidad y, como antecedentes secundarios, otros modelos como el Malcolm Baldrige, el Iberoamericano de Excelencia en la Gestión y el de Fundación Europea para la Gestión de Calidad (EFQM) en cuanto a su estructura organizacional y la definición de dimensiones y criterios. Se establecieron los conceptos adaptativos necesarios para la aplicabilidad del mismo, en un ámbito pasible de contemplar la generación de construcciones conceptuales ajustadas a las realidades locales. Los objetivos específicos del trabajo son definir dimensiones, criterios y factores de calidad para un territorio, proponer las herramientas de control del metamodelo de calidad territorial, establecer parámetros para la delimitación de un territorio objeto de intervención, identificar los actores territoriales participantes en la implantación y evaluación de calidad y definir los roles de los actores territoriales identificados.This paper deals with a methamodel oriented to an implementation and evaluation of quality in one specific territory with a view to management for their development. Alluding to the concept "metha", refers to the intention and purpose of forming a comprehensive concept, container, understanding and going beyond the subject of construction, in this case a model, taking into account the diversities, differences and particularities of the territories in which it could be implemented and assessed quality, and even the interpretations and variations on the concept of quality that can be assumed on the basis of socio-cultural context that reference it. To this, we adopted as the main antecedent, the model of the National Quality Award, and as secondary background, other quality models such as the Malcolm Baldrige, the Ibero-American Model Management Excellence Model, and the European Foundation for Management quality Management (EFQM), in terms of organizational structure and definition of dimensions and criteria, and were established the necessary concepts for adaptive applicability thereof, in an area liable to consider the generation of conceptual structures fixed to local realities.     The dusty torus in the Circinus galaxy: a dense disk and the torus funnel

    (Abridged) With infrared interferometry it is possible to resolve the nuclear dust distributions that are commonly associated with the dusty torus in active galactic nuclei (AGN). The Circinus galaxy hosts the closest Seyfert 2 nucleus and previous interferometric observations have shown that its nuclear dust emission is well resolved. To better constrain the dust morphology in this active nucleus, extensive new observations were carried out with MIDI at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer. The emission is distributed in two distinct components: a disk-like emission component with a size of ~ 0.2 ×\times 1.1 pc and an extended component with a size of ~ 0.8 ×\times 1.9 pc. The disk-like component is elongated along PA ~ 46{\deg} and oriented perpendicular to the ionisation cone and outflow. The extended component is elongated along PA ~ 107{\deg}, roughly perpendicular to the disk component and thus in polar direction. It is interpreted as emission from the inner funnel of an extended dust distribution and shows a strong increase in the extinction towards the south-east. We find no evidence of an increase in the temperature of the dust towards the centre. From this we infer that most of the near-infrared emission probably comes from parsec scales as well. We further argue that the disk component alone is not sufficient to provide the necessary obscuration and collimation of the ionising radiation and outflow. The material responsible for this must instead be located on scales of ~ 1 pc, surrounding the disk. The clear separation of the dust emission into a disk-like emitter and a polar elongated source will require an adaptation of our current understanding of the dust emission in AGN. The lack of any evidence of an increase in the dust temperature towards the centre poses a challenge for the picture of a centrally heated dust distribution.Comment: 30 pages, 12 figures; A&A in pres

    Detection of Cellular Senescence Reveals the Existence of Senescent Tumor Cells within Invasive Breast Carcinomas and Related Metastases

    Oncogene-induced senescence is thought to constitute a barrier to carcinogenesis by arresting cells at risk of malignant transformation. However, numerous findings suggest that senescent cells may conversely promote tumor growth and metastatic progression, for example, through the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) they produce. Here, we investigated the degree to which senescent tumor cells exist within untreated human primary breast carcinomas and whether the presence of senescent cancer cells in primary tumors is recapitulated in their matched lymph node metastases. For the detection of senescence, we used SA-β-galactosidase (SA-β-gal) staining and other senescence markers such as Ki67, p21, p53, and p16. In patients with invasive luminal A and B breast carcinomas, we found broad similarities in the appearance of cancer cells between primary tumors and their corresponding metastases. Analysis of lymph nodes from patients with other breast cancer subtypes also revealed senescent tumor cells within metastatic lesions. Collectively, our findings show that senescent tumor cells exist within primary breast carcinomas and metastatic lesions. These results suggest a potential role for senescent breast tumor cells during metastatic progression and raise the question as to whether the targeting of senescent tumor cells with anti-senescent drugs might represent a novel avenue for improved treatment of breast and other cancers

    The complexity of parsec-scaled dusty tori in AGN

    Warm gas and dust surround the innermost regions of active galactic nuclei (AGN). They provide the material for accretion onto the super-massive black hole and they are held responsible for the orientation-dependent obscuration of the central engine. The AGN-heated dust distributions turn out to be very compact with sizes on scales of about a parsec in the mid-infrared. Only infrared interferometry currently provides the necessary angular resolution to directly study the physical properties of this dust. Size estimates for the dust distributions derived from interferometric observations can be used to construct a size--luminosity relation for the dust distributions. The large scatter about this relation suggests significant differences between the dust tori in the individual galaxies, even for nuclei of the same class of objects and with similar luminosities. This questions the simple picture of the same dusty doughnut in all AGN. The Circinus galaxy is the closest Seyfert 2 galaxy. Because its mid-infrared emission is well resolved interferometrically, it is a prime target for detailed studies of its nuclear dust distribution. An extensive new interferometric data set was obtained for this galaxy.     X-ray Absorption and Optical Extinction in the Partially Obscured Seyfert Nucleus in Mrk 1393

    We present a detailed study of the X-ray and optical spectra of the luminous Seyfert galaxy Mrk 1393, which revealed variable partial obscuration of the active nucleus. The X-ray spectra obtained by XMM-Newton and Swift show moderate absorption with a column density around 3x10^21 cm^-2, consistent with a dust-reddening interpretation of the steep Balmer decrement seen in recent optical spectra. The X-ray flux in the 0.5 to 2 keV band during the XMM-Newton observation in 2005 and Swift observation in 2006 was a factor 6 brighter than that of the ROSAT All Sky Survey in 1991. In the past 4 years, the broad H\alpha line brightened by a factor of 4 accompanied by a decrease in the Balmer decrement. A comparison with literature spectra reveals variations in the dust extinction on time scales of several years, suggesting that the obscuring material is very close to the active nucleus. These observations indicate that a dust-to-gas ratio as high as the Galactic value can be present in moderately thick gas in the vicinity of the central engine within a few parsecs.     Investigation of nitrogen enriched silicon for particle detectors

    This article explores the viability of nitrogen enriched silicon for particle physics application. For that purpose silicon diodes and strip sensors were produced using high resistivity float zone silicon, diffusion oxygenated float zone silicon, nitrogen enriched float zone silicon and magnetic Czochralski silicon. The article features comparative studies using secondary ion mass spectrometry, electrical characterization, edge transient current technique, source and thermally stimulated current spectroscopy measurements on sensors that were irradiated up to a fluence of 1015 neq/cm2. Irradiations were performed with 23 MeV protons at the facilities in Karlsruhe (KIT), with 24 GeV/c protons at CERN (PS-IRRAD) and neutrons at the research reactor in Ljubljana. Secondary ion mass spectrometry measurements give evidence for nitrogen loss after processing, which makes gaining from nitrogen enrichment difficult

    The power output of local obscured and unobscured AGN: crossing the absorption barrier with Swift/BAT and IRAS

    The Swift/BAT 9-month catalogue of active galactic nuclei (AGN) provides an unbiased census of local supermassive black hole accretion, and probes to all but the highest levels of absorption in AGN. We explore a method for characterising the bolometric output of both obscured and unobscured AGN by combining the hard X-ray data from Swift/BAT (14-195keV) with the reprocessed IR emission as seen with the IRAS all-sky surveys. This approach bypasses the complex modifications to the SED introduced by absorption in the optical, UV and 0.1-10 keV regimes and provides a long-term, average picture of the bolometric output of these sources. We broadly follow the approach of Pozzi et al. for calculating the bolometric luminosities by adding nuclear IR and hard X-ray luminosities, and consider different approaches for removing non-nuclear contamination in the large-aperture IRAS fluxes. Using mass estimates from the M_BH-L_bulge relation, we present the Eddington ratios \lambda_Edd and 2-10 keV bolometric corrections for a subsample of 63 AGN (35 obscured and 28 unobscured) from the Swift/BAT catalogue, and confirm previous indications of a low Eddington ratio distribution for both samples. Importantly, we find a tendency for low bolometric corrections (typically 10-30) for the obscured AGN in the sample (with a possible rise from ~15 for \lambda_Edd<0.03 to ~32 above this), providing a hitherto unseen window onto accretion processes in this class of AGN. This finding is of key importance in calculating the expected local black hole mass density from the X-ray background since it is composed of emission from a significant population of such obscured AGN. Analogous studies with high resolution IR data and a range of alternative models for the torus emission will form useful future extensions to this work.     Boojums and the Shapes of Domains in Monolayer Films

    Domains in Langmuir monolayers support a texture that is the two-dimensional version of the feature known as a boojum. Such a texture has a quantifiable effect on the shape of the domain with which it is associated. The most noticeable consequence is a cusp-like feature on the domain boundary. We report the results of an experimental and theoretical investigation of the shape of a domain in a Langmuir monolayer. A further aspect of the investigation is the study of the shape of a ``bubble'' of gas-like phase in such a monolayer. This structure supports a texture having the form of an inverse boojum. The distortion of a bubble resulting from this texture is also studied. The correspondence between theory and experiment, while not perfect, indicates that a qualitative understanding of the relationship between textures and domain shapes has been achieved.Comment: replaced with published version, 10 pages, 13 figures include

    Dust Reverberation Mapping and Light-Curve Modelling of Zw229-015

    Multiwavelength variability studies of active galactic nuclei (AGN) can be used to probe their inner regions which are not directly resolvable. Dust reverberation mapping (DRM) estimates the size of the dust emitting region by measuring the delays between the infrared (IR) response to variability in the optical light curves. We measure DRM lags of Zw229-015 between optical ground-based and Kepler light curves and concurrent IR Spitzer 3.6 and 4.5 μ\mum light curves from 2010-2015, finding an overall mean rest-frame lag of 18.3 ±\pm 4.5 days. Each combination of optical and IR light curve returns lags that are consistent with each other within 1σ\sigma, which implies that the different wavelengths are dominated by the same hot dust emission. The lags measured for Zw229-015 are found to be consistently smaller than predictions using the lag-luminosity relationship. Also, the overall IR response to the optical emission actually depends on the geometry and structure of the dust emitting region as well, so we use Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) modelling to simulate the dust distribution to further estimate these structural and geometrical properties. We find that a large increase in flux between the 2011-2012 observation seasons, which is more dramatic in the IR light curve, is not well simulated by a single dust component. When excluding this increase in flux, the modelling consistently suggests that the dust is distributed in an extended flat disk, and finds a mean inclination angle of 4913+3^{+3}_{-13} degrees.Comment: 32 pages, 32 Figures, 7 Tables; Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Parsec-scale dust distributions in Seyfert galaxies - Results of the MIDI AGN snapshot survey

    The emission of warm dust dominates the mid-infrared spectra of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Only interferometric observations provide the necessary angular resolution to resolve the nuclear dust and to study its distribution and properties. The investigation of dust in AGN cores is hence one of the main science goals for the MID-infrared Interferometric instrument MIDI at the VLTI. As the first step, the feasibility of AGN observations was verified and the most promising sources for detailed studies were identified. This was carried out in a "snapshot survey" with MIDI using Guaranteed Time Observations. In the survey, observations were attempted for 13 of the brightest AGN in the mid-infrared which are visible from Paranal. The results of the three brightest, best studied sources have been published in separate papers. Here we present the interferometric observations for the remaining 10, fainter AGN. For 8 of these, interferometric measurements could be carried out. Size estimates or limits on the spatial extent of the AGN-heated dust were derived from the interferometric data of 7 AGN. These indicate that the dust distributions are compact, with sizes on the order of a few parsec. The derived sizes roughly scale with the square root of the luminosity in the mid-infrared, s ~ sqrt(L), with no clear distinction between type 1 and type 2 objects. This is in agreement with a model of nearly optically thick dust structures heated to T ~ 300 K. For three sources, the 10 micron feature due to silicates is tentatively detected either in emission or in absorption. Based on the results for all AGN studied with MIDI so far, we conclude that in the mid-infrared the differences between individual galactic nuclei are greater than the generic differences between type 1 and type 2 objects.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, updated to version published in A&A 502, 67-8
