    Clinical success of fluoride-releasing fissure sealant in permanent first molars: 5-year retrospective study

    Background/Aim: It is important to prevent caries on permanent first molars. Fissure sealants are very effective in protecting fissures from caries. The study aimed to determine the clinical success of fluoride-releasing fissure sealants in permanent first molars in the long term. Material and Methods: 64 children with 256 healthy erupted first permanent molars and followed for 5 years, comprised the study. Children who received a fluoride-releasing fissure sealant and came regularly to controls throughout 5 years were evaluated by retention rate and development of new caries and compared with a control group. Results: The complete retention rate of fluoride-releasing fissure sealants was 48.5% and 10.7 % of the sealed teeth had caries after 5 years. 25% of the teeth without fissure sealant were decayed after five years. There was no significant difference between the rate of retention of fissure sealants and the frequency of tooth brushing after 1 year. There was no significant difference between the rate of retention of fissure sealants and oral hygiene status of children after 1 year. Conclusions: The fluoride-releasing fissure sealants were effective for the prevention of caries on pit and fissures of permanent molars and long-term clinical success was satisfying

    Casein fibres for wound healing

    The name casein is given to a family of phosphoproteins which is commonly found in milk. Until recently, this was a constituent of milk that was commonly discarded; however today, it is widely used in health supplements all over the world. In this work, a high loading (50 wt%) of casein is mixed with a solution of polycaprolactone (PCL) to produce bandage-like fibres with an average fibre diameter of 1.4 ± 0.5 ”m, which would be used to cover wounds in a series of tests with diabetic rats. Mouse fibroblast cell viability tests show that the casein-loaded fibres had little cytotoxicity with over 90% observed viability. A 14-day in vivo trial involving three groups of rats, used as control (no treatment), pure PCL fibres and casein-loaded fibres, showed that the casein within the fibres contributed to a significantly more extensive healing process. Histological analysis showed increased development of granulation tissue and follicle regrowth for the casein-loaded fibres. Further analysis showed that casein-loaded fibres have significantly lower levels of TNF-α, TGF-ÎČ IL-1ÎČ, NF-ÎșB and IL-6, contributing to superior healing.     Role of Adipokines and Hormones of Obesity in Childhood Asthma

    Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate serum levels of leptin, ghrelin, and adiponectin in obese and non-obese children with asthma and in healthy non-asthmatic children, and analyze their relationships with clinical outcomes. Methods: This study enrolled 40 obese and 51 non-obese children with asthma and 20 healthy children. Body mass index and serum leptin, ghrelin, and adiponectin levels were determined in all children. Asthma symptom scores and lung function test results were recorded for subjects with asthma. Results: Serum leptin levels (11.8 +/- 7.9, 5.3 +/- 6.8, and 2.1 +/- 2.4 ng/mL in the obese asthmatic, non-obese asthmatic, and control groups, respectively) and adiponectin levels (12,586.2 +/- 3,724.1; 18,089.3 +/- 6,452.3; and 20,297.5 +/- 3,680.7 ng/mL, respectively) differed significantly among the groups (P<0.001 for all). Mean ghrelin levels were 196.1 +/- 96.8 and 311.9 +/- 352.8 pg/mL in the obese and non-obese asthmatic groups, respectively, and 348.8 +/- 146.4 pg/mL in the control group (P=0.001). The asthma symptom score was significantly higher in the obese children with asthma than in the non-obese children with asthma (P<0.001). Leptin and adiponectin levels were correlated with the asthma symptom score in non-obese children with asthma (r=0.34 and r=-0.62, respectively). Conclusions: Obesity leads to more severe asthma symptoms in children. Moreover, leptin, adiponectin, and ghrelin may play important roles in the inflammatory pathogenesis of asthma and obesity co-morbidity

    The CMS apparatus was identified, a few years before the start of the LHC operation at CERN, to feature properties well suited to particle-flow (PF) reconstruction: a highly-segmented tracker, a fine-grained electromagnetic calorimeter, a hermetic hadron calorimeter, a strong magnetic field, and an excellent muon spectrometer. A fully-fledged PF reconstruction algorithm tuned to the CMS detector was therefore developed and has been consistently used in physics analyses for the first time at a hadron collider. For each collision, the comprehensive list of final-state particles identified and reconstructed by the algorithm provides a global event description that leads to unprecedented CMS performance for jet and hadronic tau decay reconstruction, missing transverse momentum determination, and electron and muon identification. This approach also allows particles from pileup interactions to be identified and enables efficient pileup mitigation methods. The data collected by CMS at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV show excellent agreement with the simulation and confirm the superior PF performance at least up to an average of 20 pileup interactions

    Risk portfolio on modern finance has become increasingly technical, requiring the use of sophisticated mathematical tools in both research and practice. Since companies cannot insure themselves completely against risk, as human incompetence in predicting the future precisely that written in Al-Quran surah Luqman verse 34, they have to manage it to yield an optimal portfolio. The objective here is to minimize the variance among all portfolios, or alternatively, to maximize expected return among all portfolios that has at least a certain expected return. Furthermore, this study focuses on optimizing risk portfolio so called Markowitz MVO (Mean-Variance Optimization). Some theoretical frameworks for analysis are arithmetic mean, geometric mean, variance, covariance, linear programming, and quadratic programming. Moreover, finding a minimum variance portfolio produces a convex quadratic programming, that is minimizing the objective function ðð„with constraintsð ð ð„ „ ðandðŽð„ = ð. The outcome of this research is the solution of optimal risk portofolio in some investments that could be finished smoothly using MATLAB R2007b software together with its graphic analysis
