Evolutionary Patterns and Processes in the Desert-Adapted Fern Genus Myriopteris (Pteridaceae)

This dissertation investigates the processes of hybridation, polyploidy, and apomixis and their roles in the evolution of myriopterid ferns. First, I examine patterns of hybridization in members of the Cheilanthes yavapensis complex using a suite of techiniques, ranging from molecules to morphology--including isozymes, spore measurements, and molecular phylogenetics based on chloroplast and nuclear DNA markers--to elucidate relationships in this notorious group of ferns. Second, I utilize the rules of traditional taxonomy set by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature to recircucmscribe and resurrect the genus Myriopteris from within cheilanthoid ferns. This revised classification is bolstered by results from my molecular phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequence data in the subsequent chapter. Then, using morphological and cytological analyses, I examine the evolution of indument, leaf and rachis shape, vernation, chromosome number, and reproductive mode across the myriopterid tree. In my concluding chapter I develop microsatellite markers for the apomictic triploid, M. lindheiemeri, and explore whether premeiotic chromosome duplication facilitates the production of genetically distinct offspring in this otherwise asexual lineage.
Dissertatio

Extreme Multiple Reticulate Origins of the Pteris cadieri Complex (Pteridaceae)

The Pteris cadieri complex displays extensive morphological variation and seems to have originated through hybridization. However, the members of this complex reproduce by apogamy, which usually limits genetic variation. To evaluate the hypotheses of hybrid origins, the pattern of evolution in this species complex is reconstructed. Multiple methodologies were used. Diploids, triploids, and tetraploids were identified by chromosome counts and flow cytometry. Nuclear DNA markers (cytosolic phosphoglucose isomerase gene, PgiC) were used, together with chloroplast DNA markers (atpB-rbcL spacer and rbcL gene) to infer the biparental and maternal lineages of the Pteris cadieri complex. The three cpDNA haplotype groups and five PgiC alleles found in this study indicate that the evolution of the Pteris cadieri complex has been extremely reticulate. Up to 11 taxa belonging to eight morphs were identified. By comparing genetic variation in the Pteris cadieri in two independent areas, Hainan and Taiwan, we inferred that hybridization has occurred independently in different areas. Furthermore, we found evidence for phenological divergence (evergreen and deciduous) within Taiwan. We propose that the Pteris cadieri complex originated from different genetic lineages through multiple hybridizations in different geographical areas, leading to its present morphological diversity

Affordable Care Act: impact of the health reform on the federal budget of the USA in comparison to the projected

The goal of the thesis is to approximate the real impact of the ACA healthcare reform, signed in March 2010 in the United states of America, on the federal budget of the USA in the period of 2010 - 2019 and to compare the identified results to the projections from before the passage of the law. The thesis also seeks the reasons of the differences between the projections and actual impact of the healthcare reform. How to be a Leader: College Edition

    No full text
Being a leader is a quality I have always strived to possess while growing up, as its virtues are authentic and admirable which I believe allows one to flourish into a prosperous, lucrative adult. A leader seeks purpose in life and strives for success, while inspiring, motivating, and supporting others, all of which display honor and integrity (Eby). When transitioning into college, I found being a leader to be especially prevalent in my life more than ever before. Being a first-generation college student, I had so many questions that I wanted answers to, so I had to be courageous and speak up when navigating through my first year of college. The purpose of this lesson was to present the value of being a leader, as well as how to become one, as you never know who may be silently struggling and could use a helping hand (Tracy). Leadership can be identified by a variety of characteristics one may possess, all of which work towards establishing supportive relationships and environments. It was my goal to educate students that leaders are not born, but rather are made, resulting from your surroundings and mindsets (Tracy).https://digitalcommons.cortland.edu/cor101posters/1015/thumbnail.jp
