    This thesis explores preservation and obsolescence in relation to memory and the family photograph. Through a variety of erasure processes applied to discarded vernacular imagery and projections, the artist manipulated the content, framing and perspective of alleged family memories. The specific techniques utilized include digital erasure, removal by cutting implements, targeted bleaching and the re-photographing of projected Kodachromes into selective fragments. This process facilitated the investigation of the relationship between family photographs, formation of individual memory and the life cycle of family narrative. This work raises questions about the normative sociological factors at play in memory preservation and the constructed family narrative as reflected in the vernacular photograph

    Changes in Bone Health of Female College Students

    Objective: Identifying individuals with low bone ultrasound attenuation (BUA) z-scores under the age of 30 can allow for improvements of bone health through increased intake of calcium and vitamin D, physical activity, and avoidance of excessive alcohol or caffeine intake. The goal of this study was to assess changes in bone health and observe related risk factors among female college students. Participants and Methods: Female students (n=38) enrolled in the Nutrition Program at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) who participated in the College Health and Nutrition Assessment Survey (CHANAS) were recruited to participate in a follow-up study during the fall 2019 semester. Subjects completed a bone health questionnaire and repeat bone ultrasonography measurements approximately 2.5 years after their first measurement. Bone ultrasound attenuation (BUA) z-scores from bilateral calcaneus bone were used to assess bone health. Subjects were categorized as low or normal bone status according to World Health Organization z-score criteria. Data are presented as means ± SD; changes in z-scores over time were assessed by a paired t-test; group differences were examined using independent t-tests. Results: No significant differences in bone status were observed between 1st and 2nd measurements (-0.72 ± 0.10 vs. -0.90 ± 0.86, p=0.08). At the follow-up visit, 19 participants were classified as having normal bone (-0.22 ± 0.53) and 19 participants had low bone (-1.59 ± 0.43). Subjects with normal bone status participated in more vigorous or moderate physical activity compared to subjects with low bone status (9.4 ± 7.6 vs. 6.03 ± 5.3 hours/week, p=0.07), but this observation was not statistically significant. Alcohol intake, milk intake, and body mass index were not different between groups. Conclusion: Among female college students, bone status as measured by ultrasound did not significantly change over time, however, findings suggest physical activity may be related to improved bone health. Alcohol intake, milk intake, or body mass index did not differ between students with normal vs. low bone status. Further research should be conducted to measure changes in bone health over time in a similar population using a larger number of participants

    Treaties in Collision: The Biosafety Protocol and the World Trade Organization Agreements

    In the event of a conflict between the requirements of the Biosafety Protocol, a multilateral agreement governing the trade in genetically modified organisms, and the requirements of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade and associated agreements (collectively WTO Agreements), which treaty\u27s requirements prevail? This question lies as the legal heart of the perceived conflict between trade globalization and environmental protection. This issue is particularly timely given the present trade dispute between the United States and European Union over the European Union’s restrictions on the importation of genetically modified agricultural commodities. In this piece, I analyze the relationship between these agreements. I conclude that while the “savings clause” language ultimately included in the Biosafety Protocol preserves countries’ rights and obligations under the WTO Agreements, the Protocol and the WTO Agreements are less on a collision course than some may fear

    Biannual versus annual mass azithromycin distribution and malaria seroepidemiology among preschool children in Niger: a sub-study of a cluster randomized trial.

    BACKGROUND: Biannual mass azithromycin administration to preschool children reduces all-cause mortality, but the mechanism for the effect is not understood. Azithromycin has activity against malaria parasites, and malaria is a leading cause of child mortality in the Sahel. The effect of biannual versus annual azithromycin distribution for trachoma control on serological response to merozoite surface protein 1 (MSP-119), a surrogate for malaria incidence, was evaluated among children in Niger. METHODS: Markers of malaria exposure were measured in two arms of a factorial randomized controlled trial designed to evaluate targeted biannual azithromycin distribution to children under 12 years of age compared to annual azithromycin to the entire community for trachoma control (N = 12 communities per arm). Communities were treated for 36 months (6 versus 3 distributions). Dried blood spots were collected at 36 months among children ages 1-5 years, and MSP-119 antibody levels were assessed using a bead-based multiplex assay to measure malaria seroprevalence. RESULTS: Antibody results were available for 991 children. MSP-119 seropositivity was 62.7% in the biannual distribution arm compared to 68.7% in the annual arm (prevalence ratio 0.91, 95% CI 0.83 to 1.00). Mean semi-quantitative antibody levels were lower in the biannual distribution arm compared to the annual arm (mean difference - 0.39, 95% CI - 0.05 to - 0.72). CONCLUSIONS: Targeted biannual azithromycin distribution was associated with lower malaria seroprevalence compared to that in a population that received annual distribution.     Levels of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) and Three Organochlorine Pesticides in Fish from the Aleutian Islands of Alaska

    Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and chlorinated pesticides, have been shown to have many adverse human health effects. These contaminants therefore may pose a risk to Alaska Natives that follow a traditional diet high in marine mammals and fish, in which POPs bioaccumulate.This study examined the levels of PCBs and three pesticides [p, p'-DDE, mirex, and hexachlorobenzene (HCB)] in muscle tissue from nine fish species from several locations around the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. The highest median PCB level was found in rock sole (Lepidopsetta bilineata, 285 ppb, wet weight), while the lowest level was found in rock greenling (Hexagrammos lagocephalus, 104 ppb, wet weight). Lipid adjusted PCB values were also calculated and significant interspecies differences were found. Again, rock sole had the highest level (68,536 ppb, lipid weight). Concerning the PCB congener patterns, the more highly chlorinated congeners were most common as would be expected due to their greater persistence. Among the pesticides, p, p'-DDE generally dominated, and the highest level was found in sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka, 6.9 ppb, wet weight). The methodology developed by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) was used to calculate risk-based consumption limits for the analyzed fish species. For cancer health endpoints for PCBs, all species would trigger strict advisories of between two and six meals per year, depending upon species. For noncancer effects by PCBs, advisories of between seven and twenty-two meals per year were triggered. None of the pesticides triggered consumption limits.The fish analyzed, mainly from Adak, contain significant concentrations of POPs, in particular PCBs, which raises the question whether these fish are safe to eat, particularly for sensitive populations. However when assessing any risk of the traditional diet, one must also consider the many health and cultural benefits from eating fish

    In-Orbit Performance of the GRACE Follow-on Laser Ranging Interferometer

    The Laser Ranging Interferometer (LRI) instrument on the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) Follow-On mission has provided the first laser interferometric range measurements between remote spacecraft, separated by approximately 220 km. Autonomous controls that lock the laser frequency to a cavity reference and establish the 5 degrees of freedom two-way laser link between remote spacecraft succeeded on the first attempt. Active beam pointing based on differential wave front sensing compensates spacecraft attitude fluctuations. The LRI has operated continuously without breaks in phase tracking for more than 50 days, and has shown biased range measurements similar to the primary ranging instrument based on microwaves, but with much less noise at a level of 1 nm/Hz at Fourier frequencies above 100 mHz. © 2019 authors.     The genetic architecture of the human cerebral cortex

    The cerebral cortex underlies our complex cognitive capabilities, yet little is known about the specific genetic loci that influence human cortical structure. To identify genetic variants that affect cortical structure, we conducted a genome-wide association meta-analysis of brain magnetic resonance imaging data from 51,665 individuals. We analyzed the surface area and average thickness of the whole cortex and 34 regions with known functional specializations. We identified 199 significant loci and found significant enrichment for loci influencing total surface area within regulatory elements that are active during prenatal cortical development, supporting the radial unit hypothesis. Loci that affect regional surface area cluster near genes in Wnt signaling pathways, which influence progenitor expansion and areal identity. Variation in cortical structure is genetically correlated with cognitive function, Parkinson's disease, insomnia, depression, neuroticism, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
