Chains of N=2, D=4 heterotic/type II duals
We report on a search for heterotic strings that are dual candidates of
type II compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds described as
fibrations. We find many new heterotic duals by using standard orbifold
techniques. The associated type II compactifications fall into chains in which
the proposed duals are heterotic compactifications related one another by a
sequential Higgs mechanism. This breaking in the heterotic side typically
involves the sequence , while in the type II side the weights of the complex hypersurfaces and the
structure of the quotient singularities also follow specific patterns.Comment: Latex, 21 pages, 2 table
Family Unification in Five and Six Dimensions
In family unification models, all three families of quarks and leptons are
grouped together into an irreducible representation of a simple gauge group,
thus unifying the Standard Model gauge symmetries and a gauged family symmetry.
Large orthogonal groups, and the exceptional groups and have been
much studied for family unification. The main theoretical difficulty of family
unification is the existence of mirror families at the weak scale. It is shown
here that family unification without mirror families can be realized in simple
five-dimensional and six-dimensional orbifold models similar to those recently
proposed for SU(5) and SO(10) grand unification. It is noted that a family
unification group that survived to near the weak scale and whose coupling
extrapolated to high scales unified with those of the Standard model would be
evidence accessible in principle at low energy of the existence of small

Neutrino Masses, Baryon Asymmetry, Dark Matter and the Moduli Problem : A Complete Framework
Recent developments in string theory have led to "realistic" string
compactifications which lead to moduli stabilization while generating a
hierarchy between the Electroweak and Planck scales at the same time. However,
this seems to suggest a rethink of our standard notions of cosmological
evolution after the end of inflation and before the beginning of BBN. We argue
that within classes of realistic string compactifications, there generically
exists a light modulus with a mass comparable to that of the gravitino which
generates a large late-time entropy when it decays. Therefore, all known
mechanisms of generating the baryon asymmetry of the Universe in the literature
have to take this fact into account. In this work, we find that it is still
possible to naturally generate the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe as
well as light left-handed neutrino masses from a period of Affleck-Dine(AD)
leptogenesis shortly after the end of inflation, in classes of realistic string
constructions with a minimal extension of the MSSM below the unification scale
(consisting only of right-handed neutrinos) and satisfying certain microscopic
criteria described in the text. The consequences are as follows. The lightest
left-handed neutrino is required to be virtually massless. The moduli
(gravitino) problem can be naturally solved in this framework both within
gravity and gauge mediation. The observed upper bound on the relic abundance
constrains the moduli-matter and moduli-gravitino couplings since the DM is
produced non-thermally within this framework. Finally, although not a definite
prediction, the framework naturally allows a light right-handed neutrino and
sneutrinos around the electroweak scale which could have important implications

The Exact MSSM Spectrum from String Theory
We show the existence of realistic vacua in string theory whose observable
sector has exactly the matter content of the MSSM. This is achieved by
compactifying the E_8 x E_8 heterotic superstring on a smooth Calabi-Yau
threefold with an SU(4) gauge instanton and a Z_3 x Z_3 Wilson line.
Specifically, the observable sector is N=1 supersymmetric with gauge group
SU(3)_C x SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y x U(1)_{B-L}, three families of quarks and leptons,
each family with a right-handed neutrino, and one Higgs-Higgs conjugate pair.
Importantly, there are no extra vector-like pairs and no exotic matter in the
zero mode spectrum. There are, in addition, 6 geometric moduli and 13 gauge
instanton moduli in the observable sector. The holomorphic SU(4) vector bundle

Flux-induced SUSY-breaking soft terms on D7-D3 brane systems
We study the effect of RR and NSNS 3-form fluxes on the effective action of
the worldvolume fields of Type IIB D7/D3-brane configurations. The D7-branes
wrap 4-cycles on a local Calabi-Yau geometry. This is an extension of previous
work on hep-th/0311241, where a similar analysis was applied to the case of
D3-branes. Our present analysis is based on the D7- and D3-brane
Dirac-Born-Infeld and Chern-Simons actions, and makes full use of the
R-symmetries of the system, which allow us to compute explicitly results for
the fields lying at the D3-D7 intersections. A number of interesting new
properties appear as compared to the simpler case of configurations with only
D3-branes. As a general result one finds that fluxes stabilize some or all of
the D7-brane moduli. We argue that this is important for the problem of
stabilizing Kahler moduli through non-perturbative effects in KKLT-like vacua.
We also show that (0,3) imaginary self-dual fluxes, which lead to
compactifications with zero vacuum energy, give rise to SUSY-breaking soft
terms including gaugino and scalar masses, and trilinear terms. Particular
examples of chiral MSSM-like models of this class of vacua, based on D3-D7

Discrete Gauge Symmetries in Discrete MSSM-like Orientifolds
Motivated by the necessity of discrete Z_N symmetries in the MSSM to insure
baryon stability, we study the origin of discrete gauge symmetries from open
string sector U(1)'s in orientifolds based on rational conformal field theory.
By means of an explicit construction, we find an integral basis for the
couplings of axions and U(1) factors for all simple current MIPFs and
orientifolds of all 168 Gepner models, a total of 32990 distinct cases. We
discuss how the presence of discrete symmetries surviving as a subgroup of
broken U(1)'s can be derived using this basis. We apply this procedure to
models with MSSM chiral spectrum, concretely to all known U(3)xU(2)xU(1)xU(1)
and U(3)xSp(2)xU(1)xU(1) configurations with chiral bi-fundamentals, but no
chiral tensors, as well as some SU(5) GUT models. We find examples of models
with Z_2 (R-parity) and Z_3 symmetries that forbid certain B and/or L violating
MSSM couplings. Their presence is however relatively rare, at the level of a

The clean conscience at work: Emotions, intuitions and morality
How do people decide what is right and wrong, and to what extent are their actions guided by such moral considerations? Inspired by philosophical traditions, early approaches to morality focused on rationality, and assumed that people arrive at moral standards by logical thought. More
recently, however, psychologists have explored the influence of emotions and intuitions on morality, and evidence has been accumulating that moral decisions and behaviors are far from rational, but instead, are guided by intuitions and situational considerations. For example, seemingly irrelevant
concerns such as keeping one’s mind and spirit clean and pure can change people’s moral judgment. Emotions can also influence behavior, and positive, uplifting emotions such as elevation and gratitude can be harnessed to produce beneficial outcomes for individuals and organizations
alike. Furthermore, people appear to aspire to an equilibrium of moral self-worth, and engage in more or less ethical behavior depending on their currently perceived moral integrity. Thus, morality and ethical behavior is less likely to reside in the person than in the context, and thus, for
the study of spirituality, it might be beneficial to focus on people’s situational constraints in the workplace rather than their stable dispositions. Further, because of their potential to inspire positive action, organizations might aim to make positive moral emotions, such as gratitude,
elevation, and awe part of everyday work contexts. Overall, in organizations and the workplace, the goal shifts from trying to identify the moral individual to providing the contextual conditions that appeal to spiritual concerns in order to foster moral behavior.</jats:p
The Ekpyrotic Universe: Colliding Branes and the Origin of the Hot Big Bang
We propose a cosmological scenario in which the hot big bang universe is
produced by the collision of a brane in the bulk space with a bounding orbifold
plane, beginning from an otherwise cold, vacuous, static universe. The model
addresses the cosmological horizon, flatness and monopole problems and
generates a nearly scale-invariant spectrum of density perturbations without
invoking superluminal expansion (inflation). The scenario relies, instead, on
physical phenomena that arise naturally in theories based on extra dimensions
and branes. As an example, we present our scenario predominantly within the
context of heterotic M-theory. A prediction that distinguishes this scenario
from standard inflationary cosmology is a strongly blue gravitational wave
spectrum, which has consequences for microwave background polarization

The statistics of string/M theory vacua
We discuss systematic approaches to the classification of string/M theory
vacua, and physical questions this might help us resolve. To this end, we
initiate the study of ensembles of effective Lagrangians, which can be used to
precisely study the predictive power of string theory, and in simple examples
can lead to universality results. Using these ideas, we outline an approach to
estimating the number of vacua of string/M theory which can realize the
