Structure in the 3D Galaxy Distribution: I. Methods and Example Results
Three methods for detecting and characterizing structure in point data, such
as that generated by redshift surveys, are described: classification using
self-organizing maps, segmentation using Bayesian blocks, and density
estimation using adaptive kernels. The first two methods are new, and allow
detection and characterization of structures of arbitrary shape and at a wide
range of spatial scales. These methods should elucidate not only clusters, but
also the more distributed, wide-ranging filaments and sheets, and further allow
the possibility of detecting and characterizing an even broader class of
shapes. The methods are demonstrated and compared in application to three data
sets: a carefully selected volume-limited sample from the Sloan Digital Sky
Survey redshift data, a similarly selected sample from the Millennium
Simulation, and a set of points independently drawn from a uniform probability
distribution -- a so-called Poisson distribution. We demonstrate a few of the
many ways in which these methods elucidate large scale structure in the

Specific heat of quasi-2D antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models with varying inter-planar couplings
We have used the stochastic series expansion (SSE) quantum Monte Carlo (QMC)
method to study the three-dimensional (3D) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model
on cubic lattices with in-plane coupling J and varying inter-plane coupling
J_perp < J. The specific heat curves exhibit a 3D ordering peak as well as a
broad maximum arising from short-range 2D order. For J_perp << J, there is a
clear separation of the two peaks. In the simulations, the contributions to the
total specific heat from the ordering across and within the layers can be
separated, and this enables us to study in detail the 3D peak around T_c (which
otherwise typically is dominated by statistical noise). We find that the peak
height decreases with decreasing J_perp, becoming nearly linear below J_perp =
0.2J. The relevance of these results to the lack of observed specific heat
anomaly at the ordering transition of some quasi-2D antiferromagnets is

Identification and Quantification of Urinary Microbial Phenolic Metabolites by HPLC-ESI-LTQ-Orbitrap-HRMS and Their Relationship with Dietary Polyphenols in Adolescents
This study aimed to develop and validate a liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization-linear ion trap quadrupole-Orbitrap-high-resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC/ESI-LTQ-Orbitrap-HRMS) method to identify and quantify urinary microbial phenolic metabolites (MPM), as well as to explore the relationship between MPM and dietary (poly)phenols in Spanish adolescents. A total of 601 spot urine samples of adolescents aged 12.02 ± 0.41 years were analyzed. The quantitative method was validated for linearity, limit of detection, limit of quantification, recovery, intra-and inter-day accuracy and precision, as well as postpreparative stability according to the criteria established by the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists International. A total of 17 aglycones and 37 phase II MPM were identified and quantified in 601 spot urine samples. Phenolic acids were the most abundant urinary MPM, whereas stilbenes, hydroxytyrosol, and enterodiol were the least abundant. Urinary hydroxycoumarin acids (urolithins) were positively correlated with flavonoid and total (poly)phenol intake. An HPLC-ESI-LTQ-Orbitrap-HRMS method was developed and fully validated to quantify MPM. The new method was performed accurately and is suitable for MPM quantification in large epidemiological studies. Urinary lignans and urolithins are proposed as potential biomarkers of grain and nut intake in an adolescent population
The Quijote CMB Experiment
We present the current status of the QUIJOTE (Q-U-I JOint TEnerife) CMB
Experiment, a new instrument which will start operations early 2009 at Teide
Observatory, with the aim of characterizing the polarization of the CMB and
other processes of galactic and extragalactic emission in the frequency range
10-30 GHz and at large angular scales. QUIJOTE will be a valuable complement at
low frequencies for the PLANCK mission, and will have the required sensitivity
to detect a primordial gravitational-wave component if the tensor-to-scalar

Cytokine Production but Lack of Proliferation in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells from Chronic Chagas' Disease Cardiomyopathy Patients in Response to T. cruzi Ribosomal P Proteins
Background:Trypanosoma cruzi ribosomal P proteins, P2β and P0, induce high levels of antibodies in patients with chronic Chagas' disease Cardiomyopathy (CCC). It is well known that these antibodies alter the beating rate of cardiomyocytes and provoke apoptosis by their interaction with β1-adrenergic and M2-muscarinic cardiac receptors. Based on these findings, we decided to study the cellular immune response to these proteins in CCC patients compared to non-infected individuals.Methodology/Principal findings:We evaluated proliferation, presence of surface activation markers and cytokine production in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) stimulated with P2β, the C-terminal portion of P0 (CP0) proteins and T. cruzi lysate from CCC patients predominantly infected with TcVI lineage. PBMC from CCC patients cultured with P2β or CP0 proteins, failed to proliferate and express CD25 and HLA-DR on T cell populations. However, multiplex cytokine assays showed that these antigens triggered higher secretion of IL-10, TNF-α and GM-CSF by PBMC as well as both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells subsets of CCC subjects. Upon T. cruzi lysate stimulation, PBMC from CCC patients not only proliferated but also became activated within the context of Th1 response. Interestingly, T. cruzi lysate was also able to induce the secretion of GM-CSF by CD4+ or CD8+ T cells.Conclusions/Significance:Our results showed that although the lack of PBMC proliferation in CCC patients in response to ribosomal P proteins, the detection of IL-10, TNF-α and GM-CSF suggests that specific T cells could have both immunoregulatory and pro-inflammatory potential, which might modulate the immune response in Chagas' disease. Furthermore, it was possible to demonstrate for the first time that GM-CSF was produced by PBMC of CCC patients in response not only to recombinant ribosomal P proteins but also to parasite lysate, suggesting the value of this cytokine to evaluate T cells responses in T. cruzi infection.Fil: Longhi, Silvia Andrea. Amphotericin B plasma monitoring for one burn child using high-performance liquid chromatography
A bioanalytical micromethod was described for the quantification of amphotericin B in plasma by HPLC. The method showed high absolute recovery, good linearity (0.1-10.0 μg/mL, r2 = 0.999), sensitivity (limits of quantification: 0.1 μg/mL), and acceptable stability. Inter/intraday precisions were 6.8 %/2.3 % and mean accuracy was 94.3 %. The method was applied to plasma monitoring of one burn child, 3 years old, 25 kg, thermal injury (18 % total burn surface area - TBSA). Amphotericin B (1 mg/kg) was prescribed from 24th to 35th day of the accident and plasma monitoring and pharmacokinetics was performed by serial blood collections on 27th and 35th days post burn. Plasma concentrations obtained were respectively 0.7 μg/mL and 1.2 μg/mL. Pharmacokinetics at both periods (27th vs 35th day) also was compared: 13.8 vs 14.3 h (t1/2β ); 0.5 vs 0.3 mL/min.kg (CLT) and 0.65 vs 0.38 L/kg (Vdss ). In conclusion, drug plasma monitoring by HPLC was quite useful to guarantee low risk and drug efficacy in a paediatric burn patient.Colegio de Farmacéuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aire
Highlights from the Pierre Auger Observatory
The Pierre Auger Observatory is the world's largest cosmic ray observatory.
Our current exposure reaches nearly 40,000 km str and provides us with an
unprecedented quality data set. The performance and stability of the detectors
and their enhancements are described. Data analyses have led to a number of
major breakthroughs. Among these we discuss the energy spectrum and the
searches for large-scale anisotropies. We present analyses of our X
data and show how it can be interpreted in terms of mass composition. We also
describe some new analyses that extract mass sensitive parameters from the 100%
duty cycle SD data. A coherent interpretation of all these recent results opens
new directions. The consequences regarding the cosmic ray composition and the
