First Results from the DRIFT-IIa Dark Matter Detector
Data from the DRIFT-IIa directional dark matter experiment are presented,
collected during a near continuous 6 month running period. A detailed
calibration analysis comparing data from gamma-ray, x-ray and neutron sources
to a GEANT4 Monte Carlo simulations reveals an efficiency for detection of
neutron induced recoils of 94+/-2(stat.)+/-5(sys.)%. Software-based cuts,
designed to remove non-nuclear recoil events, are shown to reject 60Co
gamma-rays with a rejection factor of better than 8x10-6 for all energies above
threshold. An unexpected event population has been discovered and is shown here
to be due to the alpha-decay of 222Rn daughter nuclei that have attached to the
central cathode. A limit on the flux of neutrons in the Boulby Underground

Track Reconstruction and Performance of DRIFT Directional Dark Matter Detectors using Alpha Particles
First results are presented from an analysis of data from the DRIFT-IIa and
DRIFT-IIb directional dark matter detectors at Boulby Mine in which alpha
particle tracks were reconstructed and used to characterise detector
performance--an important step towards optimising directional technology. The
drift velocity in DRIFT-IIa was [59.3 +/- 0.2 (stat) +/- 7.5 (sys)] m/s based
on an analysis of naturally-occurring alpha-emitting background. The drift
velocity in DRIFT-IIb was [57 +/- 1 (stat) +/- 3 (sys)] m/s determined by the
analysis of alpha particle tracks from a Po-210 source. 3D range reconstruction
and energy spectra were used to identify alpha particles from the decay of
Rn-222, Po-218, Rn-220 and Po-216. This study found that (22 +/- 2)% of Po-218
progeny (from Rn-222 decay) are produced with no net charge in 40 Torr CS2. For
Po-216 progeny (from Rn-220 decay) the uncharged fraction is (100 +0 -35)%.Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables. Submitted to Nuclear Instruments and

Measurement of the Range Component Directional Signature in a DRIFT-II Detector using 252Cf Neutrons
The DRIFT collaboration utilizes low pressure gaseous detectors to search for
WIMP dark matter with directional signatures. A 252Cf neutron source was placed
on each of the principal axes of a DRIFT detector in order to test its ability
to measure directional signatures from the three components of very low energy
(~keV/amu) recoil ranges. A high trigger threshold and the event selection
procedure ensured that only sulfur recoils were analyzed. Sulfur recoils
produced in the CS2 target gas by the 252Cf source closely match those expected
from massive WIMP induced sulfur recoils. For each orientation of the source a
directional signal from the range components was observed, indicating that the
detector is directional along all 3 axes. An analysis of these results yields
an optimal orientation for DRIFT detectors when searching for a directional
signature from WIMPs. Additional energy dependent information is provided to

Effect of the Aerosol-Phase State on Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation from the Reactive Uptake of Isoprene-Derived Epoxydiols (IEPOX)
Acid-catalyzed reactions between gas- and particle-phase constituents are critical to atmospheric secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. The aerosol-phase state is thought to influence the reactive uptake of gas-phase precursors to aerosol particles by altering diffusion rates within particles. However, few experimental studies have explored the precise role of the aerosol-phase state on reactive uptake processes. This laboratory study systematically examines the reactive uptake coefficient (γ) of trans-β-isoprene epoxydiol (trans-β-IEPOX), the predominant IEPOX isomer, on acidic sulfate particles coated with SOA derived from α-pinene ozonolysis. γIEPOX is obtained for core-shell particles, the morphology of which was confirmed by microscopy, as a function of SOA coating thickness and relative humidity. γIEPOX is reduced, in some cases by half of the original value, when SOA coatings are present prior to uptake, especially when coating thicknesses are > 15 nm. The diurnal trend of IEPOX lost to acid-catalyzed reactive uptake yielding SOA compared with other known atmospheric sinks (gas-phase oxidation or deposition) is derived by modeling the experimental coating effect with field data from the southeastern United States. IEPOX-derived SOA is estimated to be reduced by 16-27% due to preexisting organic coatings during the afternoon (12:00 to 7:00 p.m., local time), corresponding to the period with the highest level of production

A Structured Learning Approach to Attributed Graph Embedding
In this paper, we describe the use of concepts from structural and statistical pattern recognition for recovering a mapping which can be viewed as an operator on the graph attribute-set. This mapping can be used to embed graphs into spaces where tasks such as categorisation and relational matching can be effected. We depart from concepts in graph theory to introduce mappings as operators over graph spaces. This treatment leads to the recovery of a mapping based upon the graph attributes which is related to the edge-space of the graphs under study. As a result, this mapping is a linear operator over the attribute set which is associated with the graph topology. Here, we employ an optimisation approach whose cost function is related to the target function used in discrete Markov Random Field approaches. Thus, the proposed method provides a link between concepts in graph theory, statistical inference and linear operators. We illustrate the utility of the recovered embedding for shape matching and categorisation on MPEG7 CE-Shape-1 dataset. We also compare our results to those yielded by alternatives.Full Tex
Radiologische Befunde bei Myotoner Dystrophie Typ 1 und 2
To assess whether cognitive behavioural (CB) approaches improve disability, pain, quality of life and/or work disability for patients with low back pain (LBP) of any duration and of any age.Nine databases were searched for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) from inception to November 2014. Two independent reviewers rated trial quality and extracted trial data. Standardised mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated for individual trials. Pooled effect sizes were calculated using a random-effects model for two contrasts: CB versus no treatment (including wait-list and usual care (WL/UC)), and CB versus other guideline-based active treatment (GAT).The review included 23 studies with a total of 3359 participants. Of these, the majority studied patients with persistent LBP (>6 weeks; n=20). At long term follow-up, the pooled SMD for the WL/UC comparison was -0.19 (-0.38, 0.01) for disability, and -0.23 (-0.43, -0.04) for pain, in favour of CB. For the GAT comparison, at long term the pooled SMD was -0.83 (-1.46, -0.19) for disability and -0.48 (-0.93, -0.04) for pain, in favour of CB. While trials varied considerably in methodological quality, and in intervention factors such as provider, mode of delivery, dose, duration, and pragmatism, there were several examples of lower intensity, low cost interventions that were effective.CB interventions yield long-term improvements in pain, disability and quality of life in comparison to no treatment and other guideline-based active treatments for patients with LBP of any duration and of any age.PROSPERO protocol registration number: CRD42014010536
