    Microstructural controls on reservoir quality in tight oil carbonate reservoir rocks

    In carbonate reservoir rocks the complex interaction between the petrophysical properties corresponds to the various depositional microstructures which are modified by various diagenetic processes that ultimately define the reservoir quality, and pose challenges to the prediction of permeability. The permeability heterogeneity in the carbonate oil reservoirs of northern Iraq varies widely and is thought to be controlled by a number of different factors. In this work, controls of matrix permeability for the Cretaceous Kometan formation selected from five oil fields in Kirkuk embayment zone have been investigated. Helium porosity, helium pulse decay permeability , brine permeability, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Mercury Injection Capillary pressure (MICP) , Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), and photomicrography of thin section have been used to investigate the effect of microstructure on the variation of permeability in the Kometan Formation. The formation has porosities and permeabilities which range from 0.5±0.5% to 29±0.5% and from 0.65±0.08 ÎŒD to 700±0.08 ÎŒD respectively. Three types of pore systems have been investigated using pore type, pore size and pore-throat size as characterizing parameters. We have recognized three microstructural types: (i) matrix composed of nano-intercrystalline pores (pore diameter dp smaller than 1 ÎŒm and a nanoporous pore-throat size), (ii) matrix composed of micro-intercrystalline pores (110 ÎŒm) also with microporous pore-throat radii. The nano-intercrystalline pore system is common across northern Iraq and represents the effective pore system type in the reservoirs of the Kirkuk embayment zone. For these tight carbonate reservoirs, the mineralogy, especially of quartz and clay minerals (illite and smectite), has little relationship with the measured Klinkenberg-corrected permeability. Consequently, mineralogy is not a useful controlling factor for permeability. Diagenetic processes have altered the depositional texture significantly, resulting in changes to the pore size and pore-throat size distribution and affecting the permeability. In addition the matrix permeability is sensitive to stress, with permeability decreases between -4×10‟⁎mD/psi and -4 ×10‟⁔mD/psi in the effective stress range from 0 psi to 4000 psi. It has been found that of the three microstructure pore types the nano-intercrystalline pore system is more sensitive to increasing effective stress compared to the micro-intercrystalline and meso-intragranular pore systems. Laboratory experiments have shown that stylolisation resulting from regional fluid movements has also affected matrix permeability, with the stylolites acting as barriers to fluid flow and considered to be an important source of tightness of the Kometan formation in the Kirkuk embayment fields

    The effect of the “rod-and-frame” illusion on grip planning in a sequential object manipulation task

    We investigated the effect of visual context (i.e., a visual illusion) on the planning of a sequential object manipulation task. Participants (n = 13) had to grasp a rod embedded in a “rod-and-frame” illusion and insert the rod-end into a tight hole in a pre-defined way. The grip type (defined by start posture, either pronated or supinated; and end posture, either comfortable or uncomfortable) used to grasp the rod was registered as a macroscopic variable of motor planning. Different rod orientations forced the participants to switch between grip types. As expected, most participants switched between pronated and supinated start postures, such that they ended the movement with a comfortable end posture. As it has been argued that planning is dependent on visual context information, we hypothesized that the visual illusion would affect the specific rod orientation at which participants would switch into a different grip type. This hypothesis was confirmed. More specifically, the illusion affected the critical spatial information that is used for action planning. Collectively, these findings are the first to show an effect of an illusion on motor planning in a sequential object manipulation task

    Ecological succession of a Jurassic shallow-water ichthyosaur fall.

    After the discovery of whale fall communities in modern oceans, it has been hypothesized that during the Mesozoic the carcasses of marine reptiles created similar habitats supporting long-lived and specialized animal communities. Here, we report a fully documented ichthyosaur fall community, from a Late Jurassic shelf setting, and reconstruct the ecological succession of its micro- and macrofauna. The early 'mobile-scavenger' and 'enrichment-opportunist' stages were not succeeded by a 'sulphophilic stage' characterized by chemosynthetic molluscs, but instead the bones were colonized by microbial mats that attracted echinoids and other mat-grazing invertebrates. Abundant cemented suspension feeders indicate a well-developed 'reef stage' with prolonged exposure and colonization of the bones prior to final burial, unlike in modern whale falls where organisms such as the ubiquitous bone-eating worm Osedax rapidly destroy the skeleton. Shallow-water ichthyosaur falls thus fulfilled similar ecological roles to shallow whale falls, and did not support specialized chemosynthetic communities

    Functional studies of signaling pathways in peri-implantation development of the mouse embryo by RNAi.

    BACKGROUND: Studies of gene function in the mouse have relied mainly on gene targeting via homologous recombination. However, this approach is difficult to apply in specific windows of time, and to simultaneously knock-down multiple genes. Here we report an efficient method for dsRNA-mediated gene silencing in late cleavage-stage mouse embryos that permits examination of phenotypes at post-implantation stages. RESULTS: We show that introduction of Bmp4 dsRNA into intact blastocysts by electroporation recapitulates the genetic Bmp4 null phenotype at gastrulation. It also reveals a novel role for Bmp4 in the regulation the anterior visceral endoderm specific gene expression and its positioning. We also show that RNAi can be used to simultaneously target several genes. When applied to the three murine isoforms of Dishevelled, it leads to earlier defects than previously observed in double knock-outs. These include severe delays in post-implantation development and defects in the anterior midline and neural folds at headfold stages. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that the BMP4 signalling pathway contributes to the development of the anterior visceral endoderm, and reveal an early functional redundancy between the products of the murine Dishevelled genes.     Selective scattering between Floquet-Bloch and Volkov states in a topological insulator

    The coherent optical manipulation of solids is emerging as a promising way to engineer novel quantum states of matter. The strong time periodic potential of intense laser light can be used to generate hybrid photon-electron states. Interaction of light with Bloch states leads to Floquet-Bloch states which are essential in realizing new photo-induced quantum phases. Similarly, dressing of free electron states near the surface of a solid generates Volkov states which are used to study non-linear optics in atoms and semiconductors. The interaction of these two dynamic states with each other remains an open experimental problem. Here we use Time and Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (Tr-ARPES) to selectively study the transition between these two states on the surface of the topological insulator Bi2Se3. We find that the coupling between the two strongly depends on the electron momentum, providing a route to enhance or inhibit it. Moreover, by controlling the light polarization we can negate Volkov states in order to generate pure Floquet-Bloch states. This work establishes a systematic path for the coherent manipulation of solids via light-matter interaction.Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, final version to appear in Nature Physic

    Lentiviral Engineered Fibroblasts Expressing Codon Optimized COL7A1 Restore Anchoring Fibrils in RDEB

    Cells therapies, engineered to secrete replacement proteins, are being developed to ameliorate otherwise debilitating diseases. Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is caused by defects of type VII collagen (C7), a protein essential for anchoring fibril formation at the dermal-epidermal junction (DEJ). Whilst allogeneic fibroblasts injected directly into the dermis can mediate transient disease modulation, autologous gene-modified fibroblasts should evade immunological rejection and support sustained delivery of C7 at the DEJ. We demonstrate the feasibility of such an approach using a therapeutic grade, self-inactivating-lentiviral vector, encoding codon optimized COL7A1, to transduce RDEB fibroblasts under conditions suitable for clinical application. Expression and secretion of C7 was confirmed, with transduced cells exhibiting supra-normal levels of protein expression and ex vivo migration of fibroblasts was restored in functional assays. Gene modified RDEB fibroblasts also deposited C7 at the DEJ of human RDEB skin xenografts placed on NOD-scid IL2Rgamma(null) recipients, with reconstruction of human epidermal structure and regeneration of anchoring fibrils at the DEJ. Fibroblast mediated restoration of protein and structural defects in this RDEB model strongly supports proposed therapeutic applications in man

    Influence of family and friend smoking on intentions to smoke and smoking-related attitudes and refusal self-efficacy among 9-10 year old children from deprived neighbourhoods: a cross-sectional study.

    BACKGROUND: Smoking often starts in early adolescence and addiction can occur rapidly. For effective smoking prevention there is a need to identify at risk groups of preadolescent children and whether gender-specific intervention components are necessary. This study aimed to examine associations between mother, father, sibling and friend smoking and cognitive vulnerability to smoking among preadolescent children living in deprived neighbourhoods. METHODS: Cross-sectional data was collected from 9-10 year old children (n =1143; 50.7% girls; 85.6% White British) from 43 primary schools in Merseyside, England. Children completed a questionnaire that assessed their smoking-related behaviour, intentions, attitudes, and refusal self-efficacy, as well as parent, sibling and friend smoking. Data for boys and girls were analysed separately using multilevel linear and logistic regression models, adjusting for individual cognitions and school and deprivation level. RESULTS: Compared to girls, boys had lower non-smoking intentions (P = 0.02), refusal self-efficacy (P = 0.04) and were less likely to agree that smoking is 'definitely' bad for health (P < 0.01). Friend smoking was negatively associated with non-smoking intentions in girls (P < 0.01) and boys (P < 0.01), and with refusal self-efficacy in girls (P < 0.01). Sibling smoking was negatively associated with non-smoking intentions in girls (P < 0.01) but a positive association was found in boys (P = 0.02). Boys who had a smoking friend were less likely to 'definitely' believe that the smoke from other people's cigarettes is harmful (OR 0.57, 95% CI: 0.35 to 0.91, P = 0.02). Further, boys with a smoking friend (OR 0.38, 95% CI: 0.21 to 0.69, P < 0.01) or a smoking sibling (OR 0.45, 95% CI: 0.21 to 0.98) were less likely to 'definitely' believe that smoking is bad for health. CONCLUSION: This study indicates that sibling and friend smoking may represent important influences on 9-10 year old children's cognitive vulnerability toward smoking. Whilst some differential findings by gender were observed, these may not be sufficient to warrant separate prevention interventions. However, further research is needed

    Simplified tabu search with random-based searches for bound constrained global optimization

    This paper proposes a simplified version of the tabu search algorithm that solely uses randomly generated direction vectors in the exploration and intensification search procedures, in order to define a set of trial points while searching in the neighborhood of a given point. In the diversification procedure, points that are inside any already visited region with a relative small visited frequency may be accepted, apart from those that are outside the visited regions. The produced numerical results show the robustness of the proposed method.
