    Dynamic analysis and performance assessment of the Inertial Sea Wave Energy Converter (ISWEC) device via harmonic balance

    Given the particular energy-maximising performance objective, wave energy converter (WEC) systems are prone to exhibit highly nonlinear behaviour. We present, in this paper,a detailed dynamic analysis and control synthesis for the Inertial Sea Wave Energy Converter (ISWEC) system, deriving and considering a comprehensive associated nonlinear model. In particular, we adopt a harmonic balance (HB) method to achieve this objective, producing the so-called amplitude-frequency curves (AFC) for the corresponding ISWEC nonlinear model,derived via a Lagrangian approach. We demonstrate that the system can present a variety of different behaviours which are completely neglected by its linear model counterpart. Leveraging both the efficiency, and convenient representation of the HB method, we synthesise so-called‘passive’ (i.e. proportional) energy-maximising controllers using a variety of input conditions.We provide a comparison of the obtained control parameters with those arising from standard linear modelling, showing a consistent improvement in performance by effectively considering the relevant nonlinear ISWEC dynamics

    Perceptions of students after implementing peer instruction in an introductory physics course

    In the present work we carried out a qualitative educational research to assess the perceptions of a group of students that attended (weekly and non-mandatory) complementary classes of a physics course during 2017. In these classes the teaching method called peer instruction (PI) was implemented, which involves collaborative learning among students. From the students? responses to a simple questionnaire we assessed some basic aspects of these classes from which we can conclude that, in the first place, students considered that PI had positively influenced their comprehension of physical concepts and that, secondly, they positively valued the activities performed and the dynamics of these classes. These results, which are part of a series of previous works that have been published elsewhere, are relevant in a context were active and collaborative learning strategies are practically non-existent and push us to continue and broaden the implementation of this and other active learning methods in physics courses.Fil: Budini, Nicolas.     Effects of macrophyte heterogeneity and food availability on structural parameters of the macroinvertebrate community in a Pampean stream

    Environmental heterogeneity in natural ecosystems influences several parameters at the population and community levels. In freshwater ecosystems, habitat heterogeneity can be provided by macrophyte species with different structural shapes. Previous studies suggest that aquatic plants with more complex architectures will support higher number, biomass, and taxon richness of macroinvertebrates than plants with simpler shape. We investigated the influence of macrophyte structural heterogeneity (quantified by fractal dimension) and food availability (represented by epiphytic biomass) on several parameters (number of individuals, biomass, body size distribution, taxon richness, and diversity) of the macroinvertebrate community in a Pampean stream. Four submerged macrophyte species (Egeria densa, Elodea ernstae, Ceratophyllum demersum, and Stuckenia striata) and associated macroinvertebrates were sampled in late spring, summer, and autumn. Plants were photographed and fractal dimension was estimated from the images by the box-counting method. Fractal dimension was independent of plant surface area per unit of macrophyte biomass and differed significantly among species. Mean fractal dimension varied between 1.29 and 1.62, and increased following the sequence E. densa → S. striata → E. ernstae → C. demersum. Macrophyte species with higher fractal dimension supported a greater abundance of macroinvertebrates, especially those of small body size (500-1,000 lm); but fractal dimension was unrelated to macroinvertebrate biomass, richness, and diversity. However, overall animal biomass was significantly associated to the epiphytic abundance. Consequently, macrophyte heterogeneity influences macroinvertebrate density and body size distribution, while animal biomass depends on epiphytic food resources provided by plants.Fil: Ferreiro, Nicolas Andres.     Exploring the Relationships Between Altered Body Perception, Limb Position Sense, and Limb Movement Sense in Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

The objectives of this study were to assess body perception and the senses of limb position and limb movement in complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) and to test whether these variables are related to each other and to pain intensity. Thirteen patients with upper limb CRPS (mean pain intensity, 4.2 ± 2.4 out of 10) and 13 controls were recruited.     Phosphorus Enrichment Affects Immobilization but not Litter Decomposition or Exoenzymatic Activities in a Pampean Stream

    The effect of phosphorous enrichment on decomposition rate, exoenzymatic activities (β-glucosidase, cellobiohydrolase and alkaline phosphatase), and macroinvertebrate abundance in Typha latifolia leaves were assessed in a 2nd order Pampean stream (Central Argentina). Phosphorous was added to a downstream reach while another reach located upstream was kept intact and, once significant differences in phosphorus concentration in water were attained, leaf bags were attached to each reach bottom. T. latifolia leaves lost 77% of their initial weight along 154 days and decomposition rates were not significantly different between reaches. Besides, neither exoenzymatic activities nor macroinvertebrate abundances differed between reaches. However, an increment in leaf phosphorus content, attributed to immobilization by decomposer microorganisms, was detected in the enriched reach.Fil: Ferreiro, Nicolas Andres.     Regioselective addition of DDQ on a quinoid ring: an entry into chiral zwitterionic bridging ligands

    International audienceThe regioselective insertion of DDQ into a C-H bond of the 6π + 6π electron zwitterionic benzoquinonemonoimines 4a-c results in the formation of the novel chiral C-substituted quinoid ligands 11a-c. These Michael adducts feature a preserved zwitterionic form and a quaternary stereogenic carbon center as evidenced by the single crystal X-ray structure of the derivative 11a. The ECD spectra, optical rotations and racemization barriers of the two enantiomers of 11a were measured subsequently to their separation by a preparative chiral HPLC. Because the racemization of 11a is stopped in basic media, compounds 11a-c give a new entry in chiral zwitterionic bridging ligands

    Present-day deformation of the Pyrenees revealed by GPS surveying and earthquake focal mechanisms until 2011

    The Pyrenean mountain range is a slowly deforming belt with continuous and moderate seismic activity. To quantify its deformation field, we present the velocity field estimated from a GPS survey of the Pyrenees spanning 18 yr. The PotSis and ResPyr networks, including a total of 85 GPS sites, were installed and first measured in 1992 and 1995 1997, respectively, and remeasured in 2008 and 2010. We obtain a deformation field with velocities less than 1 mm yr−1 across the range. The estimated velocities for individual stations do not differ significantly from zero with 95 per cent confidence. Even so, we estimate a maximum extensional horizontal strain rate of 2.0 ± 1.7 nanostrain per year in a N S direction in the western part of the range. We do not interpret the vertical displacements due to their large uncertainties. In order to compare the horizontal strain rates with the seismic activity, we analyse a set of 194 focal mechanisms using three methods: (i) the 'r' factor relating their P and T axes, (ii) the stress tensors obtained by fault slip inversion and (iii) the strain-rate tensors. Stress and strain-rate tensors are estimated for: (i) the whole data set, (ii) the eastern and western parts of the range separately, and (iii) eight zones, which are defined based on the seismicity and the tectonic patterns of the Pyrenees. Each of these analyses reveals a lateral variation of the deformation style from compression and extension in the east to extension and strike-slip in the west of the range. Although the horizontal components of the strain-rate tensors estimated from the seismic data are slightly smaller in magnitude than those computed from the GPS velocity field, they are consistent within the 2σ uncertainties.     Salvage high-dose chemotherapy in female patients with relapsed/refractory germ-cell tumors: A retrospective analysis of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT)

    Background: High-dose chemotherapy (HDC) with hematopoietic progenitor cell transplantation is a standard option for relapsed/refractory testicular germ-cell tumor (GCT), but only few data have been reported in female patients with GCT. We conducted a retrospective analysis of female patients with GCT treated with HDC and registered with the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation. Patients and methods: Between 1985 and 2013, 60 registered female patients with GCT, median age 27 years (range 15-48), were treated with salvage HDC. Forty patients (67%) had primary ovarian GCT, 8 (13%) mediastinal, 7 (12%) retroperitoneal and 5 (8%) other primary sites/unknown. Twenty-two patients (37%) received HDC as second-line therapy, 29 (48%) as third-line, and 9 (15%) as fourth- to sixth-line. Nine of 60 patients (15%) received HDC as late-intensification with no evidence of metastasis before HDC. The conditioning HDC regimens comprised carboplatin in 51 of 60 cases (85%), and consisted of a single HDC cycle in 31 cases (52%), a multi-cycle HDC regimen in 29 (48%). Results: Nine cases who underwent late intensification HDC were not evaluable for response. Of the other 51 assessable patients, 17 (33%) achieved a complete response (CR), 8 (16%) a marker-negative partial remission (PRm-), 5 (10%) a marker-positive partial remission, 5 (10%) stable disease, and 13 (25%) progressive disease. There were 3 toxic deaths (6%). With an overall median follow-up of 14 months (range 1-219), 7 of 9 (78%) patients with late intensification and 18 of the 25 patients (72%) achieving a CR/PRm- following HDC were free of relapse/progression. In total, 25 of 60 patients (42%) were progression-free following HDC at a median follow-up of 87 months (range 3-219 months). Conclusions: Salvage HDC based on carboplatin represents a therapeutic option for female patients with relapsed/refractory GCT
