Reply to Comment on Role of the transition state in muon implantation and Thermal spike in muon implantation
The transition state model proposed for muonium formation in solids is critically discussed with respect to the delayed capture model. The two models differ mainly in how the electron capture at the muon is treated. In the delayed capture model the electron stems from the ionization track of the implanted muon. Important electron mobility information is derived in several papers from the time the electron needs to arrive at the muon. In our transition state model, the electron is picked up in the charge exchange regime during slowing down and is present already when the muon stops in the target. Thus, no information about electron mobility can be obtained from such measurement
Prescription refill, patient self-report and physician report in assessing adherence to oral endocrine therapy in early breast cancer patients: a restrospective cohort study in Catalonia, Spain.
AIMS: To compare different methods in order to assess adherence and persistence with oral endocrine therapy in women diagnosed with breast cancer (BC) in Catalonia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study covered all women newly diagnosed with stage I, II or IIIa BC and positive hormone receptors at six hospitals in Catalonia (Spain) in 2004. Adherence was assessed on the basis of physician report and patient self-report using a telephone questionnaire. Persistence was measured by refill prescriptions. We used the Kappa index to compare adherence measures and logistic regression to evaluate adherence-related risk factors. RESULTS: The study covered a total of 692 women. Adherence ranged from 92% (self-report) to 94.7% (physician report), depending on the measure used; persistence was 74.7% at 5 years of follow-up. Low concordance between measures was observed (Kappa range: 0.018-0.267). Patients aged 50-74 years showed higher adherence than those aged <50 years. Adherence was also associated with: adjuvant chemotherapy and sequential hormonal therapy. CONCLUSIONS: Concordance between the different measures was remarkably low, indicating the need for further research. Adherence is an issue in the management of BC patients taking oral drugs, and should be assessed in clinical practice
Placebo-controlled trial of nimodipine in the treatment of acute ischemic cerebral infarction
Nimodipine is a 1,4-dihydropyridine derivative that shows a preferential
cerebrovascular activity in experimental animals. Clinical data suggest that
nimodipine has a beneficial effect on the neurologic outcome of patients
suffering an acute ischemic stroke. Our double-blind placebo-controlled
multicenter trial was designed to assess the effects of oral nimodipine on the
mortality rate and neurologic outcome of patients with an acute ischemic stroke.
One hundred sixty-four patients were randomly allocated to receive either
nimodipine tablets (30 mg q.i.d.) or identical placebo tablets for 28 days.
Treatment was always started less than or equal to 48 hours after the acute
event. The Mathew Scale, slightly modified by Gelmers et al, was used for
neurologic assessment. Mortality rate and neurologic outcome after 28 days were
used as evaluation criteria. We considered 123 patients to be valid for the
analysis of efficacy. Mortality rates did not differ significantly between
groups. Neurologic outcome after 28 days of therapy did not differ between
groups. However, when only those patients most likely to benefit from any
intervention (Mathew Scale sum score of less than or equal to 65 at baseline)
were analyzed separately in post hoc-defined subgroups, the nimodipine-treated
subgroups showed a significantly better neurologic outcome. This result suggests
that some patients with acute ischemic stroke will benefit from treatment with
nimodipine tablets
Models to represent linguistic linked data
As the interest of the Semantic Web and computational linguistics communities in linguistic linked data (LLD) keeps increasing and the number of contributions that dwell on LLD rapidly grows, scholars (and linguists in particular) interested in the development of LLD resources sometimes find it difficult to determine which mechanism is suitable for their needs and which challenges have already been addressed. This review seeks to present the state of the art on the models, ontologies and their extensions to represent language resources as LLD by focusing on the nature of the linguistic content they aim to encode. Four basic groups of models are distinguished in this work: models to represent the main elements of lexical resources (group 1), vocabularies developed as extensions to models in group 1 and ontologies that provide more granularity on specific levels of linguistic analysis (group 2), catalogues of linguistic data categories (group 3) and other models such as corpora models or service-oriented ones (group 4). Contributions encompassed in these four groups are described, highlighting their reuse by the community and the modelling challenges that are still to be faced
PINGS: the PPAK IFS Nearby Galaxies Survey
We present the PPAK Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) Nearby Galaxies Survey:
PINGS, a 2-dimensional spectroscopic mosaicking of 17 nearby disk galaxies in
the optical wavelength range. This project represents the first attempt to
obtain continuous coverage spectra of the whole surface of a galaxy in the
nearby universe. The final data set comprises more than 50000 individual
spectra, covering in total an observed area of nearly 80 arcmin^2. In this
paper we describe the main astrophysical issues to be addressed by the PINGS
project, we present the galaxy sample and explain the observing strategy, the
data reduction process and all uncertainties involved. Additionally, we give
some scientific highlights extracted from the first analysis of the PINGS

An Aromatic Inventory of the Local Volume
Using infrared photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope, we perform the
first inventory of aromatic feature emission (AFE, but also commonly referred
to as PAH emission) for a statistically complete sample of star-forming
galaxies in the local volume. The photometric methodology involved is
calibrated and demonstrated to recover the aromatic fraction of the IRAC 8
micron flux with a standard deviation of 6% for a training set of 40 SINGS
galaxies (ranging from stellar to dust dominated) with both suitable
mid-infrared Spitzer IRS spectra and equivalent photometry. A potential factor
of two improvement could be realized with suitable 5.5 and 10 micron
photometry, such as what may be provided in the future by JWST. The resulting
technique is then applied to mid-infrared photometry for the 258 galaxies from
the Local Volume Legacy (LVL) survey, a large sample dominated in number by
low-luminosity dwarf galaxies for which obtaining comparable mid-infrared
spectroscopy is not feasible. We find the total LVL luminosity due to five
strong aromatic features in the 8 micron complex to be 2.47E10 solar
luminosities with a mean volume density of 8.8E6 solar luminosities per cubic
Megaparsec. Twenty-four of the LVL galaxies, corresponding to a luminosity cut
at M = -18.22 in the B band, account for 90% of the aromatic luminosity. Using
oxygen abundances compiled from the literature for 129 of the 258 LVL galaxies,
we find a correlation between metallicity and the aromatic to total infrared
emission ratio but not the aromatic to total 8 micron dust emission ratio. A
possible explanation is that metallicity plays a role in the abundance of
aromatic molecules relative to the total dust content, but other factors such
as star formation and/or the local radiation field affect the excitation of
