Nonionizing electromagnetic field: A promising alternative for growing control yeast

    Get PDF
In the food industry, some fungi are considered to be common spoilage microorganisms which reduce the shelf life of products. To avoid this outcome, different technologies are being developed to control their growth. Electromagnetic fields (EMF) have been used to combat bacterial growth, but there are few studies on yeasts and their possible action mechanisms. For this reason, we studied the effect of EMF between 1 to 5.9 GHz bands on the growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast and observed that all the frequencies of the band used cause the reduction of the viability of this yeast. In addition, we observed that the distance between the antenna and the sample is an important factor to consider to control the growing yeast. By using transmission electron microscopy, we found that the EMF caused a loss of continuity of the yeast cell membrane. Therefore, EMF may be used as a control method for yeast growth.Fil: Riffo, Byron. In the course of psychosocial accompaniment in scenarios of violence, initially an approach was made from the concepts and dimensions that imply all the theoretical understanding to understand the situations related to the victims from a historical point and that remain latent in certain situations. The photo voice tool is used as an instrument to build a history of painful experiences with people who have been victims of the conflict in our country, where through the story we can promote new strategies of self-perception and re-meaning of victimizing situations, which generated pain and sufferings, with which the individual recognizes other capacities to get ahead, develop new dignifying and quality life projects. From his reality starting from the violent fact. Within the proposed exercises is the analysis of life stories, taken from the book, that offers us the guide for the development of the analysis, real stories lived within the armed conflict; setting a stage of analysis and reflection of the intervention and psychosocial action. Where strategies are proposed in solution of it. Finally, the case of the residents of Pandurí is addressed, where it is possible to identify certain aspects related to this situation, such as the psychosocial emergencies, strategies of support and intervention in crisis are also designed, to give it a good orientation, and in the same way find social skills that help mitigate the problem. Through the following work, it seeks to strengthen students of psychology, skills and personal content, and in the same way, professionals who approve a reflective approach to the various phenomena that have occurred in society, which lead to the armed conflict in Colombia, as a response to this harsh situation or reality, which has happened through the times and are subject to the post-conflict framework; in the same way, the alignment and construction of future professionals who have the right faculty to approach, analyze and act through different narrative approaches, and can be developed in diverse environments and conflicting situations. This is the intention sought by the National Open and Distance University (UNAD) for the academic training of its professionals in relation to the post-conflict issue in Colombia

The dynamic assembly of distinct RNA polymerase I complexes modulates rDNA transcription

    Get PDF
Cell growth requires synthesis of ribosomal RNA by RNA polymerase I (Pol I). Binding of initiation factor Rrn3 activates Pol I, fostering recruitment to ribosomal DNA promoters. This fundamental process must be precisely regulated to satisfy cell needs at any time. We present in vivo evidence that, when growth is arrested by nutrient deprivation, cells induce rapid clearance of Pol I-Rrn3 complexes, followed by the assembly of inactive Pol I homodimers. This dual repressive mechanism reverts upon nutrient addition, thus restoring cell growth. Moreover, Pol I dimers also form after inhibition of either ribosome biogenesis or protein synthesis. Our mutational analysis, based on the electron cryomicroscopy structures of monomeric Pol I alone and in complex with Rrn3, underscores the central role of subunits A43 and A14 in the regulation of differential Pol I complexes assembly and subsequent promoter association. The project was supported by grant BFU2013-48374-P of the Spanish MINECO and by the Ramón Areces Foundation. Draft genomes of Penicillium roqueforti, Fusarium sororula, Chalaropsis populi, and Chrysoporthe puriensis are presented. Penicillium roqueforti is a model fungus for genetics, physiological and metabolic studies, as well as for biotechnological applications. Fusarium sororula and Chrysoporthe puriensis are important tree pathogens, and Chalaropsis populi is a soilborne root-pathogen. The genome sequences presented here thus contribute towards a better understanding of both the pathogenicity and biotechnological potential of these species. The University of Pretoria, the Department of Science and Technology (DST)/National Research Foundation (NRF) Centre of Excellence in Tree Health Biotechnology (CTHB), South Africa, the Tree Protection Co-operative Programme (TPCP), the National Research Foundation and the DST-NRF SARChI chair in Fungal Genomics.http://www.imafungus.orgam2022BiochemistryForestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI)GeneticsMicrobiology and Plant Patholog

Ibero-American Consensus on Low- and No-Calorie Sweeteners: Safety, Nutritional Aspects and Benefits in Food and Beverages

    Get PDF
International scientific experts in food, nutrition, dietetics, endocrinology, physical activity, paediatrics, nursing, toxicology and public health met in Lisbon on 2-4 July 2017 to develop a Consensus on the use of low- and no-calorie sweeteners (LNCS) as substitutes for sugars and other caloric sweeteners. LNCS are food additives that are broadly used as sugar substitutes to sweeten foods and beverages with the addition of fewer or no calories. They are also used in medicines, health-care products, such as toothpaste, and food supplements. The goal of this Consensus was to provide a useful, evidence-based, point of reference to assist in efforts to reduce free sugars consumption in line with current international public health recommendations. Participating experts in the Lisbon Consensus analysed and evaluated the evidence in relation to the role of LNCS in food safety, their regulation and the nutritional and dietary aspects of their use in foods and beverages. The conclusions of this Consensus were: (1) LNCS are some of the most extensively evaluated dietary constituents, and their safety has been reviewed and confirmed by regulatory bodies globally including the World Health Organisation, the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority; (2) Consumer education, which is based on the most robust scientific evidence and regulatory processes, on the use of products containing LNCS should be strengthened in a comprehensive and objective way; (3) The use of LNCS in weight reduction programmes that involve replacing caloric sweeteners with LNCS in the context of structured diet plans may favour sustainable weight reduction. Furthermore, their use in diabetes management programmes may contribute to a better glycaemic control in patients, albeit with modest results. LNCS also provide dental health benefits when used in place of free sugars; (4) It is proposed that foods and beverages with LNCS could be included in dietary guidelines as alternative options to products sweetened with free sugars; (5) Continued education of health professionals is required, since they are a key source of information on issues related to food and health for both the general population and patients. With this in mind, the publication of position statements and consensus documents in the academic literature are extremely desirable
