Oral health inequalities and the corporate determinants of health: a commentary
Empirical research critically examining the role of the corporate determinants of health has gained traction in the past few years. Many of these reports have received strong, sometimes litigious, backlash from the corporations exposed. The aim of this paper is to provide a critical commentary on existing literature, policies, procedures and observations of issues, especially regarding the use of the corporate determinants of health as a research construct, in the persistence and flourishing of oral health inequalities at a global level. We discuss theoretical frameworks that underpin the power constructs of the corporate determinants of health, including Lukes “three faces of power” theory. This theory posits that power is exercised in three ways: through decision-making, through non-decision-making and ideologically. We will demonstrate, using examples of corporate determinants of health and oral health inequalities from several countries, how intervening at key leverage points is a crucial strategy for improving oral health inequalities at a global level
Children’s rights in their oral health care: How responsive are oral health professionals to children’s rights
Research on children’s rights in oral health care is lacking, and this study aims to partially fill this gap. In 2015, we conducted research in one region of New Zealand using video methods to explore the rights of 22 children during a specific oral health treatment, the placement of stainless steel crowns. Our findings show that many children did not receive a professional standard of care, there were gaps in the delivery and standard of care, and there were numerous examples of children’s rights’ violations. At the same time, however, some of the children’s dental practitioners’ (CDPs) actions may have been acceptable practice within the profession if children’s rights have not yet fully been embedded into the practice of oral health care workers. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of our findings and suggestions for a more rights based standard of oral health care
Final State Interactions in Hypernuclear Decay
We present an update of the One-Meson-Exchange (OME) results for the weak
decay of s- and p-shell hypernuclei (Ref. Phys. Rev. C {\bf 56}, 339 (1997)),
paying special attention to the role played by final state interactions between
the emitted nucleons. The present study also corrects for a mistake in the
inclusion of the and exchange mechanisms, which substantially
increases the ratio of neutron-induced to proton-induced transitions,
. With the most up-to-date model ingredients, we find that
the OME approach is able to describe very satisfactorily most of the measured

Overview of the New Horizons Science Payload
The New Horizons mission was launched on 2006 January 19, and the spacecraft
is heading for a flyby encounter with the Pluto system in the summer of 2015.
The challenges associated with sending a spacecraft to Pluto in less than 10
years and performing an ambitious suite of scientific investigations at such
large heliocentric distances (> 32 AU) are formidable and required the
development of lightweight, low power, and highly sensitive instruments. This
paper provides an overview of the New Horizons science payload, which is
comprised of seven instruments. Alice provides spatially resolved ultraviolet
spectroscopy. The Ralph instrument has two components: the Multicolor Visible
Imaging Camera (MVIC), which performs panchromatic and color imaging, and the
Linear Etalon Imaging Spectral Array (LEISA), which provides near-infrared
spectroscopic mapping capabilities. The Radio Experiment (REX) is a component
of the New Horizons telecommunications system that provides both occultation
and radiometry capabilities. The Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI)
provides high sensitivity, high spatial resolution optical imaging
capabilities. The Solar Wind at Pluto (SWAP) instrument measures the density
and speed of solar wind particles. The Pluto Energetic Particle Spectrometer
Science Investigation (PEPSSI) measures energetic protons and CNO ions. The
Venetia Burney Student Dust Counter (VB-SDC) is used to record dust particle

Structural Determinants and Children's Oral Health: A Cross-National Study
Much research on children's oral health has focused on proximal determinants at the expense of distal (upstream) factors. Yet, such upstream factors-the so-called structural determinants of health-play a crucial role. Children's lives, and in turn their health, are shaped by politics, economic forces, and social and public policies. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between children's clinical (number of decayed, missing, and filled teeth) and self-reported oral health (oral health-related quality of life) and 4 key structural determinants (governance, macroeconomic policy, public policy, and social policy) as outlined in the World Health Organization's Commission for Social Determinants of Health framework. Secondary data analyses were carried out using subnational epidemiological samples of 8- to 15-y-olds in 11 countries ( N = 6,648): Australia (372), New Zealand (three samples; 352, 202, 429), Brunei (423), Cambodia (423), Hong Kong (542), Malaysia (439), Thailand (261, 506), United Kingdom (88, 374), Germany (1498), Mexico (335), and Brazil (404). The results indicated that the type of political regime, amount of governance (e.g., rule of law, accountability), gross domestic product per capita, employment ratio, income inequality, type of welfare regime, human development index, government expenditure on health, and out-of-pocket (private) health expenditure by citizens were all associated with children's oral health. The structural determinants accounted for between 5% and 21% of the variance in children's oral health quality-of-life scores. These findings bring attention to the upstream or structural determinants as an understudied area but one that could reap huge rewards for public health dentistry research and the oral health inequalities policy agenda
Parity-Violating Interaction Effects I: the Longitudinal Asymmetry in pp Elastic Scattering
The proton-proton parity-violating longitudinal asymmetry is calculated in
the lab-energy range 0--350 MeV, using a number of different, latest-generation
strong-interaction potentials--Argonne V18, Bonn-2000, and Nijmegen-I--in
combination with a weak-interaction potential consisting of rho- and
omega-meson exchanges--the model known as DDH. The complete scattering problem
in the presence of parity-conserving, including Coulomb, and parity-violating
potentials is solved in both configuration- and momentum-space. The predicted
parity-violating asymmetries are found to be only weakly dependent upon the
input strong-interaction potential adopted in the calculation. Values for the
rho- and omega-meson weak coupling constants and
are determined by reproducing the measured asymmetries at 13.6 MeV, 45 MeV, and

B-cell dysregulation in Crohn's disease is partially restored with infliximab therapy
Background: B-cell depletion can improve a variety of chronic inflammatory diseases, but does not appear beneficial for patients with Crohn's disease. Objective: To elucidate the involvement of B cells in Crohn's disease, we here performed an 'in depth' analysis of intestinal and blood B-cells in this chronic inflammatory disease. Methods: Patients with Crohn's disease were recruited to study B-cell infiltrates in intestinal biopsies (n = 5), serum immunoglobulin levels and the phenotype and molecular characteristics of blood B-cell subsets (n = 21). The effects of infliximab treatment were studied in 9 patients. Results: Granulomatous tissue showed infiltrates of B lymphocytes rather than Ig-secreting plasma cells. Circulating transitional B cells and CD21low B cells were elevated. IgM memory B cells were reduced and natural effector cells showed decreased replication histories and somatic hypermutation (SHM) levels. In contrast, IgG and IgA memory B cells were normally present and their Ig gene transcripts carried increased SHM levels. The numbers of transitional and natural effector cells were normal in patients who responded clinically well to infliximab. Conclusions: B cells in patients with Crohn's disease showed signs of chronic stimulation with localization to granulomatous tissue and increased molecular maturation of IgA and IgG. Therapy with TNFα-blockers restored the defect in IgM memory B-cell generation and normalized transitional B-cell levels, making these subsets candidate markers for treatment monitoring. Together, these results suggest a chronic, aberrant B-cell response in patients with Crohn's disease, which could be targeted with new therapeutics that specifically regulate B-cell function
Weak Decay of Lambda Hypernuclei
In this review we discuss the present status of strange nuclear physics, with
special attention to the weak decay of Lambda hypernuclei. The models proposed
for the evaluation of the Lambda decay widths are summarized and their results
are compared with the data. Despite the recent intensive investigations, the
main open problem remains a sound theoretical interpretation of the large
experimental values of the ratio G_n/G_p. Although recent works offer a step
forward in the solution of the puzzle, further efforts must be invested in
order to understand the detailed dynamics of the non-mesonic decay. Even if, by
means of single nucleon spectra measurements, the error bars on G_n/G_p have
been considerably reduced very recently at KEK, a clean extraction of G_n/G_p
is needed. What is missing at present, but planned for the next future, are
measurements of 1) nucleon energy spectra in double coincidence and 2) nucleon
angular correlations: such observations allow to disentangle the nucleons
produced in one- and two-body induced decays and lead to a direct determination
of G_n/G_p. For the asymmetric non-mesonic decay of polarized hypernuclei the
situation is even more puzzling. Indeed, strong inconsistencies appear already
among data. A recent experiment obtained a positive intrinsic Lambda asymmetry
parameter, a_{Lambda}, for 5_{Lambda}He. This is in complete disagreement with
a previous measurement, which obtained a large and negative a_{Lambda} for
p-shell hypernuclei, and with theory, which predicts a negative value
moderately dependent on nuclear structure effects. Also in this case, improved
experiments establishing with certainty the sign and magnitude of a_{Lambda}
for s- and p-shell hypernuclei will provide a guidance for a deeper
understanding of hypernuclear dynamics and decay mechanisms.Comment: 129 pages, 21 figures, Submitted to Phys. Rep
Unsupervised crosslingual adaptation of tokenisers for spoken language recognition
Phone tokenisers are used in spoken language recognition (SLR) to obtain elementary
phonetic information. We present a study on the use of deep neural
network tokenisers. Unsupervised crosslingual adaptation was performed to
adapt the baseline tokeniser trained on English conversational telephone speech
data to different languages. Two training and adaptation approaches, namely
cross-entropy adaptation and state-level minimum Bayes risk adaptation, were
tested in a bottleneck i-vector and a phonotactic SLR system. The SLR systems
using the tokenisers adapted to different languages were combined using score
fusion, giving 7-18% reduction in minimum detection cost function (minDCF)
compared with the baseline configurations without adapted tokenisers. Analysis
of results showed that the ensemble tokenisers gave diverse representation of
phonemes, thus bringing complementary effects when SLR systems with different
tokenisers were combined. SLR performance was also shown to be related
to the quality of the adapted tokenisers
