[EN] The gender instruction called the non-fiction personal narrative or memoirs, together with the Harkness method of teaching in the written expression of Spanish as a Foreign Language, will demonstrate in the particular context of an American University in Spain and in the US a higher development of this ability and performance. The author of this thesis would like to contribute to a long-awaited Spanish writing presence as L2 in the research literature. This study tries to develop in SFL classes for American universities and students' new methods that manage to awaken the desire since there is no need in this context to learn Spanish. Based on the experience in teaching Spanish to American university and high school students, on the one hand, in the United States as a mandatory requirement by the university for credit in foreign languages and, on the other hand, in American academic programs of immersion in Spain (in both cases following the books and the method imposed by the universities) it is common for students and teachers to be dissatisfied. The intention is to demonstrate that with the Harkness pedagogy and the teaching of written expression through the personal essay genre, it is possible to create an academic curriculum where clear improvements are obtained in the final learning. Besides, it creates an environment where students are motivated and happy to learn a second language. The construction of gender and gender-based instruction could be carried out in a socio-contextual foreground to allow SFL students to see the content in terms of language from the beginning, rather than having to integrate them later. SFL's university study programs have at their disposal shaping their destiny, the quality of their program, and that of their students' learning. The objective will have been achieved if the study has convinced readers that SFL university programs can be revitalized by applying a humanistic, at the same time, language-based orientation. The adjustment to social interactions is one of the most important keys when evaluating emotional intelligence and more specifically the sensitivity to social interactions based on communicative processes of both verbal and nonverbal and emotional nature. In this work, we analyse these processes in students of the degrees of Tourism, Marketing and Advertising and Public Relations, as well as their respective double degrees (Advertising and Public Relations and Tourism, and Marketing and Advertising) belonging to the University of Cádiz. He was administered the Test of Sensitivity to Social Interactions (TESIS). The different levels of adjustment to social interaction were analysed, both sensitivity and insensibility, whether naive or over-interpretive. We analysed the levels of adjustment to social interaction by gender, by academic qualifications obtained as well as by the type of academic grade developed (a degree or a double degree). Differences were found about the Degree in which they were enrolled and the different levels of adjustment to the scenes proposed. Only 44.4% of the sample exceeded 52 cent of the administered test. Different forms of adjustment were also found about the audiovisual characteristics of the scenes presented.peerReviewe

Evolution of radioiodine treatment in differentiated thyroid carcinoma

    Get PDF
March 2021 has marked the eightieth anniversary of targeted radionuclide therapy, recognizing the first use of radioactive iodine (RAI) to treat thyroid disease by Dr. Saul Hertz on March 31, 1941. Success with hyperthyroidism fueled a seamless, almost intuitive transition to the use of RAI in thyroid carcinoma and marked the beginning of a new paradigm for thyroid cancer diagnosis and management. Since then, several therapeutic strategies have been adopted in the management of patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) and there are still controversies today regarding which patients with DTC should be administered RAI and what RAI activity should be administered, issues that will be commented in this review.

Their multipotential capacity and immunomodulatory properties have led to an increasing interest in their biological properties and therapeutic applications. Currently, the definition of MSCs relies on a combination of phenotypic, morphological and functional characteristics which are typically evaluated upon in vitro expansion, a process that may ultimately lead to modulation of the immunophenotypic, functional and/or genetic features of these cells. Therefore, at present there is great interest in providing markers and phenotypes for direct in vivo and ex vivo identification and isolation of MSCs. [Methods]: Multiparameter flow cytometry immunophenotypic studies were performed on 65 bone marrow (BM) samples for characterization of CD13high CD105+ CD45– cells. Isolation and expansion of these cells was performed in a subset of samples in parallel to the expansion of MSCs from mononuclear cells following currently established procedures. The protein expression profile of these cells was further assessed on (paired) primary and in vitro expanded BM MSCs, and their adipogenic, chondrogenic and osteogenic differentiation potential was also determined. [Results]: Our results show that the CD13high CD105+ CD45− immunophenotype defines a minor subset of cells that are systematically present ex vivo in normal/reactive BM (n = 65) and that display immunophenotypic features, plastic adherence ability, and osteogenic, adipogenic and chondrogenic differentiation capacities fully compatible with those of MSCs. In addition, we also show that in vitro expansion of these cells modulates their immunophenotypic characteristics, including changes in the expression of markers currently used for the definition of MSCs, such as CD105, CD146 and HLA-DR. [Conclusions]: BM MSCs can be identified ex vivo in normal/reactive BM, based on a robust CD13high CD105+ and CD45− immunophenotypic profile. Furthermore, in vitro expansion of these cells is associated with significant changes in the immunophenotypic profile of MSCs.This work was supported by grants from the Instituto de Salud Carlos III, FEDER, Ministry of Economy and Competitivity, Madrid, Spain (grant PI11/02399; RETICEF RD12/0043/0021; RTICC RD12/0036/0048); Fundación Ramon Areces, Madrid, Spain (grant CIVP16A1806); Fundación Científica de la Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (AECC); Consejería de Sanidad, Gerencia Regional de Salud de Castilla y León (SACYL) (grant BIO/SA24/13) and Fundación Samuel Solórzano Barruso (University of Salamanca, Spain); CT was supported by a grant co-financed by the European Social Fund and the Junta de Castilla y León (Spain).Peer Reviewe

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells in lymph nodes show frequent NOTCH1 activation

    Get PDF
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is the most common adult leukemia in the Western world. Pathogenic mechanisms involve multiple external events (such as microenvironmental and antigenic stimuli) and internal events (genetic and epigenetic alterations) that are associated with the transformation, progression and evolution of CLL. CLL is characterized by an accumulation of mature B cells in peripheral blood, bone marrow and lymphoid tissues. Extracellular stimuli play an important role in the development and maintenance of neoplastic cells. B-CLL cells proliferate and activate pathogenic signaling pathways in anatomical structures known as proliferation centers, which are usually more conspicuous in involved lymph nodes.1 Its clinical course is quite heterogeneous, whereby some patients progress rapidly and have short survival, whereas others have a more stable clinical course that may not need treatment for years. This work was supported by grants from the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO) (SAF2013-47416-R) Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII)- FEDER – MINECO- AES (CP11/00018, PI10/00621, RD012/0036/0060), and Asociación Española contra el Cancer (AECC). Is Routine Prophylaxis Against Pneumocystis jirovecii Needed in Liver Transplantation? A Retrospective Single-Centre Experience and Current Prophylaxis Strategies in Spain

    Get PDF
In liver transplant (LT) recipients, Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) is most frequently reported before 1992 when immunosuppressive regimens were more intense. It is uncertain whether universal PJP prophylaxis is still applicable in the contemporary LT setting. We aimed to examine the incidence of PJP in LT recipients followed at our institution where routine prophylaxis has never been practiced and to define the prophylaxis strategies currently employed among LT units in Spain. All LT performed from 1990 to October 2019 were retrospectively reviewed and Spanish LT units were queried via email to specify their current prophylaxis strategy. During the study period, 662 LT procedures were carried out on 610 patients. Five cases of PJP were identified, with only one occurring within the first 6 months. The cumulative incidence and incidence rate were 0.82% and 0.99 cases per 1000 person transplant years. All LT units responded, the majority of which provide prophylaxis (80%). Duration of prophylaxis, however, varied significantly. The low incidence of PJP in our unprophylaxed cohort, with most cases occurring beyond the usual recommended period of prophylaxis, questions a one-size-fits-all approach to PJP prophylaxis. A significant heterogeneity in prophylaxis strategies exists among Spanish LT centres.Funding: This study was supported by the Health Research Institute Marqués de Valdecilla. IDIVAL. Santander.
