Looking the void in the eyes - the kSZ effect in LTB models
As an alternative explanation of the dimming of distant supernovae it has
recently been advocated that we live in a special place in the Universe near
the centre of a large void described by a Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) metric.
The Universe is no longer homogeneous and isotropic and the apparent late time
acceleration is actually a consequence of spatial gradients in the metric. If
we did not live close to the centre of the void, we would have observed a
Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) dipole much larger than that allowed by
observations. Hence, until now it has been argued, for the model to be
consistent with observations, that by coincidence we happen to live very close
to the centre of the void or we are moving towards it. However, even if we are
at the centre of the void, we can observe distant galaxy clusters, which are
off-centre. In their frame of reference there should be a large CMB dipole,
which manifests itself observationally for us as a kinematic Sunyaev-Zeldovich
(kSZ) effect. kSZ observations give far stronger constraints on the LTB model
compared to other observational probes such as Type Ia Supernovae, the CMB, and
baryon acoustic oscillations. We show that current observations of only 9
clusters with large error bars already rule out LTB models with void sizes
greater than approximately 1.5 Gpc and a significant underdensity, and that
near future kSZ surveys like the Atacama Cosmology Telescope, South Pole
Telescope, APEX telescope, or the Planck satellite will be able to strongly
rule out or confirm LTB models with giga parsec sized voids. On the other hand,
if the LTB model is confirmed by observations, a kSZ survey gives a unique
possibility of directly reconstructing the expansion rate and underdensity
profile of the void.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, submitted to JCA
Maximal regularity for non-autonomous equations with measurable dependence on time
In this paper we study maximal -regularity for evolution equations with
time-dependent operators . We merely assume a measurable dependence on time.
In the first part of the paper we present a new sufficient condition for the
-boundedness of a class of vector-valued singular integrals which does not
rely on H\"ormander conditions in the time variable. This is then used to
develop an abstract operator-theoretic approach to maximal regularity.
The results are applied to the case of -th order elliptic operators
with time and space-dependent coefficients. Here the highest order coefficients
are assumed to be measurable in time and continuous in the space variables.
This results in an -theory for such equations for .
In the final section we extend a well-posedness result for quasilinear
equations to the time-dependent setting. Here we give an example of a nonlinear
parabolic PDE to which the result can be applied.Comment: Application to a quasilinear equation added. Accepted for publication

Dignity and psychosocial related variables in elderly advanced cancer patients
Abstract Introduction: Most cancers occur in older individuals, who are more vulnerable due to functional impairment, multiple comorbidities, cognitive impairment, and lack of socio‑familial support. These can undermine patients' sense of dignity. This study seeks to compare dignity scores in older patients with advanced cancer on sociodemographic and clinical variables and analyze the predictive value of anxiety, depression, functional limitations, and social support on dignity scores. Methods: A prospective, multicenter, observational study conducted with participation of 15 hospitals in Spain from February 2020 to October 2021. Patients with newly‑diagnosed, advanced cancer completed the dignity (PPDS), anxiety and depression (BSI), Social Support (Duke-UNC‑11), and functional limitations (EORTC‑C30) scales. Lineal regression analyses explored the effects of anxiety, depression, functional status, and social support on dignity, adjusting for sociodemographic and clinical variables. Results: A total of 180 subjects participated in this study. The results of the correlation analysis revealed that dignity correlated negatively with anxiety, depression, and sex, and positively with social support, functional status, and longer estimated survival. Thus, women, and more anxious and depressed individuals scored lower on the dignity scale, whereas patients with more social support, fewer functional limitations, and longer estimated survival scored higher. Conclusion: In conclusion, being female, having a lower educational level, lower estimated survival, depression, anxiety, less social support, and limited functionality are correlated with less dignity in the elderly with advanced cancer. It is a priority to manage both physical and psychological symptoms in patients with unresectable advanced cancer to mitigate psychological distress and increase their sense of dignit
The -boundedness of a family of integral operators on UMD Banach function spaces
We prove the -boundedness of a family of integral operators with an
operator-valued kernel on UMD Banach function spaces. This generalizes and
simplifies earlier work by Gallarati, Veraar and the author, where the
-boundedness of this family of integral operators was shown on Lebesgue
spaces. The proof is based on a characterization of -boundedness as
weighted boundedness by Rubio de Francia.Comment: 13 pages. Generalization of arXiv:1410.665
A parallel-group, multicenter randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, phase 2/3, clinical trial to test the efficacy of pyridostigmine bromide at low doses to reduce mortality or invasive mechanical ventilation in adults with severe SARS-CoV-2 infection: the Pyridostigmine In Severe COvid-19 (PISCO) trial protocol
© 2020, The Author(s). Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, the causative agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), may lead to severe systemic inflammatory response, pulmonary damage, and even acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This in turn may result in respiratory failure and in death. Experimentally, acetylcholine (ACh) modulates the acute inflammatory response, a neuro-immune mechanism known as the inflammatory reflex. Recent clinical evidence suggest that electrical and chemical stimulation of the inflammatory reflex may reduce the burden of inflammation in chronic inflammatory diseases. Pyridostigmine (PDG), an ACh-esterase inhibitor (i-ACh-e), increases the half-life of endogenous ACh, therefore mimicking the inflammatory reflex. This clinical trial is aimed at evaluating if add-on of PDG leads to a decrease of invasive mechanical ventilation and death among patients with severe COVID-19. Methods: A parallel-group, multicenter, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, phase 2/3 clinical trial to test the efficacy of pyridostigmine bromide 60 mg/day P.O. to reduce the need for invasive mechanical ventilation and mortality in hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19. Discussion: This study will provide preliminary evidence of whether or not -by decreasing systemic inflammation- add-on PDG can improve clinical outcomes in patients with severe COVID-19. Gelatin microparticles aggregates as three-dimensional scaffolding system in cartilage engineering
A three-dimensional (3D) scaffolding system for chondrocytes culture has been produced by agglomeration of cells and gelatin microparticles with a mild centrifuging process. The diameter of the microparticles, around 10 μ, was selected to be in the order of magnitude of the chondrocytes. No gel was used to stabilize the construct that maintained consistency just because of cell and extracellular matrix (ECM) adhesion to the substrate. In one series of samples the microparticles were charged with transforming growth factor, TGF-β1. The kinetics of growth factor delivery was assessed. The initial delivery was approximately 48 % of the total amount delivered up to day 14. Chondrocytes that had been previously expanded in monolayer culture, and thus dedifferentiated, adopted in this 3D environment a round morphology, both with presence or absence of growth factor delivery, with production of ECM that intermingles with gelatin particles. The pellet was stable from the first day of culture. Cell viability was assessed by MTS assay, showing higher absorption values in the cell/unloaded gelatin microparticle pellets than in cell pellets up to day 7. Nevertheless the absorption drops in the following culture times. On the contrary the cell viability of cell/TGF-β1 loaded gelatin microparticle pellets was constant during the 21 days of culture. The formation of actin stress fibres in the cytoskeleton and type I collagen expression was significantly reduced in both cell/gelatin microparticle pellets (with and without TGF-β1) with respect to cell pellet controls. Total type II collagen and sulphated glycosaminoglycans quantification show an enhancement of the production of ECM when TGF-β1 is delivered, as expected because this growth factor stimulate the chondrocyte proliferation and improve the functionality of the tissue.JLGR acknowledge the support of the Spanish Ministry of Education through project No. MAT2010-21611-C03-01 (including the FEDER financial support). Measurement of the semileptonic charge asymmetry in B0 meson mixing with the D0 detector
We present a measurement of the semileptonic mixing asymmetry for B0 mesons,
a^d_{sl}, using two independent decay channels: B0 -> mu+D-X, with D- ->
K+pi-pi-; and B0 -> mu+D*-X, with D*- -> antiD0 pi-, antiD0 -> K+pi- (and
charge conjugate processes). We use a data sample corresponding to 10.4 fb^{-1}
of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV, collected with the D0 experiment at
the Fermilab Tevatron collider. We extract the charge asymmetries in these two
channels as a function of the visible proper decay length (VPDL) of the B0
meson, correct for detector-related asymmetries using data-driven methods, and
account for dilution from charge-symmetric processes using Monte Carlo
simulation. The final measurement combines four signal VPDL regions for each
channel, yielding a^d_{sl} = [0.68 \pm 0.45 \text{(stat.)} \pm 0.14
\text{(syst.)}]%. This is the single most precise measurement of this
parameter, with uncertainties smaller than the current world average of B
factory measurements.Comment: Version includes minor textual changes following peer review by

Ultrarelativistic sources in nonlinear electrodynamics
The fields of rapidly moving sources are studied within nonlinear
electrodynamics by boosting the fields of sources at rest. As a consequence of
the ultrarelativistic limit the delta-like electromagnetic shock waves are
found. The character of the field within the shock depends on the theory of
nonlinear electrodynamics considered. In particular, we obtain the field of an
ultrarelativistic charge in the Born-Infeld theory.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
