A Review of Advanced Composite and Nanostructured Coatings by Solid-State Cold Spraying Process
Group status drives majority and minority integration preferences
WOS:000300955100009 (Nº de Acesso Web of Science)“Prémio Científico ISCTE-IUL 2013”This research examined preferences for national-and campus-level assimilative and pluralistic policies among Black and White students under different contexts, as majority-and minority-group members. We targeted attitudes at two universities, one where 85% of the student body is White, and another where 76% of students are Black. The results revealed that when a group constituted the majority, its members generally preferred assimilationist policies, and when a group constituted the minority, its members generally preferred pluralistic policies. The results support a functional perspective: Both majority and minority groups seek to protect and enhance their collective identities

Size Effects of Brittle Particles in Aerosol Deposition—Molecular Dynamics Simulation
Copyright © The Author(s) 2021. Up to now, the role of particle sizes on the impact behavior of ceramic particles in aerosol deposition not yet fully understood. Hence, with the aim to supply a more general understanding, modeling series of low strain rate compression and high-speed impact were performed by molecular dynamics on single-crystalline particles in sizes of 10-300 nm that are tuned to match mechanical properties of TiO2-anatase. The modeling results reveal that particles with original diameter of 25-75 nm exhibit three different impact behaviors that could be distinguished as (i) rebounding, (ii) bonding and (iii) fragmentation, depending on their initial impact velocity. In contrast, particles larger than 75 nm do not exhibit the bonding behavior. Detailed stress and strain field distributions reveal that combination of “localized inelastic deformation” along the slip systems and “shear localization” cause bonding of the small and large particles to the substrate. The analyses of associated temperature rise by the inelastic deformation revealed that heat diffusion at these small scales depend on size. Whereas small particles could reach a rather homogeneous temperature distribution, the evolved heat in the larger ones keeps rather localized to areas of highest deformation and may support deformation and the formation of dense layers in aerosol deposition.young investigator research group FOCUS H2 (BMBF EnMat-514-211)
Repairing Socially Aggregated Ontologies Using Axiom Weakening
Ontologies represent principled, formalised descriptions of agents’ conceptualisations of a domain. For a community of agents, these descriptions may differ among agents. We propose an aggregative view of the integration of ontologies based on Judgement Aggregation (JA). Agents may vote on statements of the ontologies, and we aim at constructing a collective, integrated ontology, that reflects the individual conceptualisations as much as possible. As several results in JA show, many attractive and widely used aggregation procedures are prone to return inconsistent collective ontologies. We propose to solve the possible inconsistencies in the collective ontology by applying suitable weakenings of axioms that cause inconsistencies
The Borexino detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso
Borexino, a large volume detector for low energy neutrino spectroscopy, is
currently running underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso,
Italy. The main goal of the experiment is the real-time measurement of sub MeV
solar neutrinos, and particularly of the mono energetic (862 keV) Be7 electron
capture neutrinos, via neutrino-electron scattering in an ultra-pure liquid
scintillator. This paper is mostly devoted to the description of the detector
structure, the photomultipliers, the electronics, and the trigger and
calibration systems. The real performance of the detector, which always meets,
and sometimes exceeds, design expectations, is also shown. Some important
aspects of the Borexino project, i.e. the fluid handling plants, the
purification techniques and the filling procedures, are not covered in this
paper and are, or will be, published elsewhere (see Introduction and

The self in prejudice
Abstract: The self as a psychological construct, and the self in relation to the other has been discussed in psychological and sociological literature for decades, but not much attention has been given to the psychological development of the self in relation to the social construction of prejudice. The primary aim of this article is to explore the self in prejudice and thus the psychological processes involved in the development of self within the social context. Consequently, the aim is to explore the self in the construction and expression of prejudice from both a social and psychological approach, and to explain selfhood influences at the individual, group and community levels. I use the conceptual framework of Kohut’s self psychology as a lens to present the development of the self and thus the idea of the development of the self in relation to the other. In such exploration of self in prejudice, I present some of my ideas which include prejudice as an outcome of self-definition in the context of the other, as well as linking self in prejudice and group dynamics to attachment theory and the notion of “selfgroup’ in terms of overidentification with the in-group. While the social and the psychological in terms of the development of the self cannot be separated, I have therefore attempted to merge at some point the two bodies of thought in relation to the self in prejudice
The Association of Cognitive Ability with Right-wing Ideological Attitudes and Prejudice: A Meta-analytic Review
The cognitive functioning of individuals with stronger endorsement of right-wing and prejudiced attitudes has elicited much scholarly interest. Whereas many studies investigated cognitive styles, less attention has been directed towards cognitive ability. Studies investigating the latter topic generally reveal lower cognitive ability to be associated with stronger endorsement of right-wing ideological attitudes and greater prejudice. However, this relationship has remained widely unrecognized in literature. The present meta-analyses revealed an average effect size of r =-.20 [95% confidence interval (95% CI) [-0.23, -0.17]; based on 67 studies, N=84 017] for the relationship between cognitive ability and right-wing ideological attitudes and an average effect size of r=-.19 (95% CI [-0.23, -0.16]; based on 23 studies, N=27 011) for the relationship between cognitive ability and prejudice. Effect sizes did not vary significantly across different cognitive abilities and sample characteristics. The effect strongly depended on the measure used for ideological attitudes and prejudice, with the strongest effect sizes for authoritarianism and ethnocentrism. We conclude that cognitive ability is an important factor in the genesis of ideological attitudes and prejudice and thus should become more central in theorizing and model building
