The University of Sheffield CHiME-7 UDASE challenge speech enhancement system
The CHiME-7 unsupervised domain adaptation speech enhancement (UDASE) challenge targets domain adaptation to unlabelled speech data. This paper describes the University of Sheffield team’s system submitted to the challenge. A generative adversarial network (GAN) methodology based on a conformer-based metric GAN (CMGAN) is employed as opposed to the unsupervised RemixIT strategy used in the CHiME-7 baseline system. The discriminator of the GAN is trained to predict the output score of a Deep Noise Suppression Mean Opinion Score (DNSMOS) metric. Additional data augmentation strategies are employed which provide the discriminator with historical training data outputs as well as more diverse training examples from an additional pseudo-generator. The proposed approach, denoted as CMGAN+/+, achieves significant improvement in DNSMOS evaluation metrics with the best proposed system achieving 3.51 OVR-MOS, a 24% improvement over the baseline
Shadowing Effects on Vector Boson Production
We explore how nuclear modifications to the nucleon structure functions,
shadowing, affect massive gauge boson production in heavy ion collisions at
different impact parameters. We calculate the dependence of , and
production on rapidity and impact parameter to next-to-leading order in
Pb+Pb collisions at 5.5 TeV/nucleon to study quark shadowing at high . We
also compare our Pb+Pb results to the rapidity distributions at 14 TeV.Comment: 25 pages ReVTeX, 12 .eps figures, NLO included, version accepted for

Study of and from and Decays
We use the decay modes and to
study the scalar mesons and within perturbative QCD
framework. For , we perform our calculation in two
scenarios of the scalar meson spectrum. The results indicate that scenario II
is more favored by experimental data than scenario I. The important
contribution from annihilation diagrams can enhance the branching ratios about
50% in scenario I, and about 30% in scenario II. The predicted branching ratio
of in scenario I is also less favored by the experiments.
The direct CP asymmetries in are small, which are
consistent with the present experiments.Comment: More references are added. Published Versio
Observation of the Higgs Boson of strong interaction via Compton scattering by the nucleon
It is shown that the Quark-Level Linear Model (QLLM) leads
to a prediction for the diamagnetic term of the polarizabilities of the nucleon
which is in excellent agreement with the experimental data. The bare mass of
the meson is predicted to be MeV and the two-photon
width keV. It is argued that the
mass predicted by the QLLM corresponds to the reaction, i.e. to a -channel pole of the reaction.
Large -angle Compton scattering experiments revealing effects of the
meson in the differential cross section are discussed. Arguments are presented
that these findings may be understood as an observation of the Higgs boson of
strong interaction while being part of the constituent quark.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figure
Study of the Decay phi --> eta pi0 gamma with the KLOE detector
In a sample of 5.3x10^7 phi-decays observed with the KLOE detector at the
Frascati phi-factory Dafne we find 605 eta pi0 gamma events with eta -->
gamma\gamma and 197 eta pi0 gamma events with eta --> pi+ pi- pi0. The decay
phi --> eta pi0 gamma is dominated by the process phi --> a0 gamma. From a fit
to the eta pi0 mass spectrum we find BR(phi --> ao(980) gamma)= (7.4 +-
0.7)x10^-5.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys.Lett.
Measurement of Gamma(phi -> eta' gamma)/Gamma(phi -> eta gamma) and the pseudoscalar mixing angle
We have measured the radiative decays phi -> eta gamma, phi ->etaprime gamma
selecting pi+ pi- gamma gamma gamma final state in a sample of about 5 times
10^7 phi mesons produced at the Frascati phi factory DAFNE. We obtain Gamma(phi
-> etaprime gamma)/Gamma(phi -> eta gamma)=(4.70 +- 0.47 +- 0.31) times 10^-3.
From this result we derive new accurate values for the branching ratio BR(phi
->etaprime gamma) = (6.10 +- 0.61 +- 0.43) times 10^-5, and the mixing angle of
pseudoscalar mesons in the flavour basis phi_P=(41.8 +1.9 -1.6) degrees.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Lett.
Partial wave analysis of J/\psi \to \gamma \phi \phi
Using events collected in the BESII detector, the
radiative decay is
studied. The invariant mass distribution exhibits a near-threshold
enhancement that peaks around 2.24 GeV/.
A partial wave analysis shows that the structure is dominated by a
state () with a mass of
GeV/ and a width of GeV/. The
product branching fraction is: .Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. corrected proof for journa
New Strategies in Sport Nutrition to Increase Exercise Performance.
Despite over 50 years of research, the field of sports nutrition continues to grow at a rapid rate. Whilst the traditional research focus was one that centred on strategies to maximize competition performance, emerging data in the last decade has demonstrated how both macronutrient and micronutrient availability can play a prominent role in regulating those cell signalling pathways that modulate skeletal muscle adaptations to endurance and resistance training. Nonetheless, in the context of exercise performance, it is clear that carbohydrate (but not fat) still remains king and that carefully chosen ergogenic aids (e.g. caffeine, creatine, sodium bicarbonate, beta-alanine, nitrates) can all promote performance in the correct exercise setting. In relation to exercise training, however, it is now thought that strategic periods of reduced carbohydrate and elevated dietary protein intake may enhance training adaptations whereas high carbohydrate availability and antioxidant supplementation may actually attenuate training adaptation. Emerging evidence also suggests that vitamin D may play a regulatory role in muscle regeneration and subsequent hypertrophy following damaging forms of exercise. Finally, novel compounds (albeit largely examined in rodent models) such as epicatechins, nicotinamide riboside, resveratrol, β-hydroxy β-methylbutyrate, phosphatidic acid and ursolic acid may also promote or attenuate skeletal muscle adaptations to endurance and strength training. When taken together, it is clear that sports nutrition is very much at the heart of the Olympic motto, Citius, Altius, Fortius (faster, higher, stronger)
Exotic state photoproduction
It is shown that the list of unusual mesons planned for a careful study in
photoproduction can be extended by the exotic states with which should be looked for in the decay
channels in the reactions and . The full classification of the states by their
quantum numbers is presented. A simple model for the spin structure of the , , and reaction amplitudes is formulated and the tentative estimates of the
corresponding cross sections at the incident photon energy
GeV are obtained: b, b, b, and b. The problem of the
signal extraction from the natural background due to the other production channels is discussed. In particular the estimates are
presented for the , , and reaction cross sections.
Our main conclusion is that the search for the exotic
states is quite feasible at JEFLAB facility. The expected yield of the events in a 30-day run at the 100% detection
efficiency approximates events.Comment: 19 pages, revtex, 1 figure in postscipt, some comments and references
