    Diseño de las prácticas de Ecofisiología Vegetal y Biotecnología Vegetal como método de iniciación a la investigación

    Con este proyecto pretendimos que alumnos de 3er y 4º cursos de Biología, vivieran el desarrollo de un proyecto de investigación desde el trabajo de laboratorio hasta la presentación de los resultados en un foro científico, el X Congreso Hispano-Luso de Fisiología Vegetal.El trabajo tenía una doble vertiente:a) Docente. Promover el trabajo cooperativo entre alumnos a la vez que se entrenaban en el desarrollo de un trabajo científico a través de un supuesto real.b) Investigadora. En Ecofisiología Vegetal (EV) estudiar el efecto protector del BTH (metil éster del ácido benzo(1,2,3) tiodiazol-7-carbotioico) y su influencia sobre la expresión de Ha-PR-5, una proteína relacionada con patogénesis cuya expresión se induce en girasol en respuesta a la infección por este parásito obligado causante del mildiu. En Biotecnología Vegetal (BV) seleccionar el medio más adecuado para el cultivo de distintos explantos de olivo.Además del trabajo de laboratorio se programaron reuniones para la elaboración, análisis estadístico e interpretación de los resultados, la redacción del resumen que se envió al congreso y por último el diseño de los dos pósters que en él se presentaron. Para mantener el contacto con los alumnos, se utilizó la plataforma de enseñanza virtual de la Universidad de Jaén, un entorno restringido que permitió acceder a los guiones de la práctica y estar al tanto de los resultados

    Parental perception of factors related to obesity and overweight in adolescents: a qualitative study

    Introducción: La obesidad y el sobrepeso infantil y juvenil se asocia con complicaciones graves de salud a nivel físico, psicológico y social. El objetivo del presente estudio fue explorar en profundidad la percepción que tienen padres y madres sobre los factores asociados con la obesidad y el sobrepeso de sus hijos adolescentes. Metodología: Estudio cualitativo de carácter fenomenológico descriptivo utilizando grupos focales. Participaron 25 padres y madres de adolescentes diagnosticados con Obesidad o Sobrepeso que se encontraban en seguimiento en el Servicio de Pediatría del Hospital Clínico San Cecilio (España). El análisis de los datos se llevó a cabo con el software Atlas.ti 6.2 a través de un análisis temático. Resultados: La falta de límite con la comida es percibida como una fuente de conflictos y de ansiedad. Los hábitos vitales no saludables más comunes son el sedentarismo, la falta de tiempo para cocinar y no desayunar. Las percepciones de los progenitores sobre los efectos negativos de la obesidad se relacionan con acontecimientos de carácter traumático, los efectos sobre la imagen corporal, el aislamiento y la discriminación y la aparición de otras enfermedades asociadas al exceso de peso. Se observan factores moduladores del comportamiento alimentario como el fomento de hábitos saludables en el entorno escolar, la toma de conciencia del problema, la planificación de las comidas, hablar sobre el tema y la búsqueda de soluciones. Conclusiones: En el abordaje de la malnutrición por exceso, los progenitores encuentran obstáculos que dificultan el cambio y la mejora en esta población. Así, es necesario abordar la obesidad y el sobrepeso como un problema multifactorial.Introduction: Childhood and adolescent obesity and overweight is associated with serious physical, psychological and social health complications. The aim of the present study was to explore in depth parents' perceptions of factors associated with obesity and overweight in their adolescent children. Methods: A descriptive phenomenological qualitative study was carried out through focus groups. Twenty-five mothers and fathers whose children were diagnosed with obesity or overweight who were under follow-up in the Paediatric Department of the Hospital Clínico San Cecilio (Spain) participated. Data analysis was performed with Atlas.ti 6.2 software through thematic analysis. Results: Lack of limit with food was perceived as a source of conflict and anxiety. The most common unhealthy lifestyle habits were sedentary, lack of time for cooking and skiping breakfast. Parents' perceptions of the negative effects of obesity are related to traumatic events, effects on body image, isolation and discrimination and the occurrence of other diseases associated with excess weight. Modulating factors of eating behavior were observed such as the promotion of healthy habits in the school environment, awareness of the problem, meal planning, talking about the issue and the search for solutions. Conclusions: Parents encounter obstacles that hinder change and improvement in this population. Thus, it is necessary to address obesity and overweight as a multifactorial problem

    Guest Molecule-Responsive Functional Calcium Phosphonate Frameworks for Tuned Proton Conductivity

    We report the synthesis, structural characterization, and functionality of an open-framework hybrid that combines Ca2+ ions and the rigid polyfunctional ligand 5-(dihydroxyphosphoryl) isophthalic acid (PiPhtA). Ca-PiPhtA-I is obtained by slow crystallization at ambient conditions from acidic (pH≈3) aqueous solutions. It possesses a high water content (both Ca coordinated and in the lattice), and importantly, it exhibits water-filled 1D channels. At 75 °C, Ca-PiPhtA-I is partially dehydrated and exhibits a crystalline diffraction pattern that can be indexed in a monoclinic cell with parameters close to the pristine phase. Rietveld refinement was carried out for the sample heated at 75 °C, Ca-PiPhtA-II, using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction data.All connectivity modes of the “parent” Ca-PiPhtA-I framework are retained in Ca-PiPhtA-II. Upon Ca-PiPhtA-I exposure to ammonia vapors (28% aqueous NH3) a new derivative is obtained (Ca-PiPhtA-NH3) containing 7 NH3 and 16 H2O molecules according to elemental and thermal analyses. Ca-PiPhtA-NH3 exhibits a complex X-ray diffraction pattern with peaks at 15.3 and 13.0 Å that suggest partial breaking and transformation of the parent pillared structure. Although detailed structural identification of Ca-PiPhtA-NH3 was not possible, due in part to nonequilibrium adsorption conditions and the lack of crystallinity, FT-IR spectra and DTA-TG analysis indicate profound structural changes compared to the pristine Ca-PiPhtA-I. At 98% RH and T = 24 °C, proton conductivity, σ, for Ca PiPhtA-I is 5.7 ×10−4 S·cm−1. It increases to 1.3 × 10−3 S·cm−1 upon activation by preheating the sample at 40 °C for 2 h followed by water equilibration at room temperature under controlled conditions. Ca-PiPhtA-NH3 exhibits the highest proton conductivity, 6.6 × 10−3 S·cm−1, measured at 98% RH and T = 24 °C. Ea for proton transfer in the above-mentioned frameworks range between 0.23 and 0.4 eV, typical of a Grothuss mechanism of proton conduction.Proyecto nacional MAT2010-1517

    Beyond species loss: The extinction of ecological interactions in a changing world

    © 2014 The Authors. The effects of the present biodiversity crisis have been largely focused on the loss of species. However, a missed component of biodiversity loss that often accompanies or even precedes species disappearance is the extinction of ecological interactions. Here, we propose a novel model that (i) relates the diversity of both species and interactions along a gradient of environmental deterioration and (ii) explores how the rate of loss of ecological functions, and consequently of ecosystem services, can be accelerated or restrained depending on how the rate of species loss covaries with the rate of interactions loss. We find that the loss of species and interactions are decoupled, such that ecological interactions are often lost at a higher rate. This implies that the loss of ecological interactions may occur well before species disappearance, affecting species functionality and ecosystems services at a faster rate than species extinctions. We provide a number of empirical case studies illustrating these points. Our approach emphasizes the importance of focusing on species interactions as the major biodiversity component from which the 'health' of ecosystems depends.Peer Reviewe

    Fifteen species in one: deciphering the Brachionus plicatilis species complex (Rotifera, Monogononta) through DNA taxonomy

    Understanding patterns and processes in biological diversity is a critical task given current and rapid environmental change. Such knowledge is even more essential when the taxa under consideration are important ecological and evolutionary models. One of these cases is the monogonont rotifer cryptic species complex Brachionus plicatilis, which is by far the most extensively studied group of rotifers, is widely used in aquaculture, and is known to host a large amount of unresolved diversity. Here we collate a dataset of previously available and newly generated sequences of COI and ITS1 for 1273 isolates of the B. plicatilis complex and apply three approaches in DNA taxonomy (i.e. ABGD, PTP, and GMYC) to identify and provide support for the existence of 15 species within the complex. We used these results to explore phylogenetic signal in morphometric and ecological traits, and to understand correlation among the traits using phylogenetic comparative models. Our results support niche conservatism for some traits (e.g. body length) and phylogenetic plasticity for others (e.g. genome size)

    An Experimental DUAL Model of Advanced Liver Damage

    Individuals exhibiting an intermediate alcohol drinking pattern in conjunction with signs of metabolic risk present clinical features of both alcohol-associated and metabolic-associated fatty liver diseases. However, such combination remains an unexplored area of great interest, given the increasing number of patients affected. In the present study, we aimed to develop a preclinical DUAL (alcohol-associated liver disease plus metabolic-associated fatty liver disease) model in mice. C57BL/6 mice received 10% vol/vol alcohol in sweetened drinking water in combination with a Western diet for 10, 23, and 52 weeks (DUAL model). Animals fed with DUAL diet elicited a significant increase in body mass index accompanied by a pronounced hypertrophy of adipocytes, hypercholesterolemia, and hyperglycemia. Significant liver damage was characterized by elevated plasma alanine aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase levels, extensive hepatomegaly, hepatocyte enlargement, ballooning, steatosis, hepatic cell death, and compensatory proliferation. Notably, DUAL animals developed lobular inflammation and advanced hepatic fibrosis. Sequentially, bridging cirrhotic changes were frequently observed after 12 months. Bulk RNA-sequencing analysis indicated that dysregulated molecular pathways in DUAL mice were similar to those of patients with steatohepatitis. Conclusion: Our DUAL model is characterized by obesity, glucose intolerance, liver damage, prominent steatohepatitis and fibrosis, as well as inflammation and fibrosis in white adipose tissue.     Predicting Spatial Patterns of Plant Recruitment Using Animal-Displacement Kernels

    For plants dispersed by frugivores, spatial patterns of recruitment are primarily influenced by the spatial arrangement and characteristics of parent plants, the digestive characteristics, feeding behaviour and movement patterns of animal dispersers, and the structure of the habitat matrix. We used an individual-based, spatially-explicit framework to characterize seed dispersal and seedling fate in an endangered, insular plant-disperser system: the endemic shrub Daphne rodriguezii and its exclusive disperser, the endemic lizard Podarcis lilfordi. Plant recruitment kernels were chiefly determined by the disperser's patterns of space utilization (i.e. the lizard's displacement kernels), the position of the various plant individuals in relation to them, and habitat structure (vegetation cover vs. bare soil). In contrast to our expectations, seed gut-passage rate and its effects on germination, and lizard speed-of-movement, habitat choice and activity rhythm were of minor importance. Predicted plant recruitment kernels were strongly anisotropic and fine-grained, preventing their description using one-dimensional, frequency-distance curves. We found a general trade-off between recruitment probability and dispersal distance; however, optimal recruitment sites were not necessarily associated to sites of maximal adult-plant density. Conservation efforts aimed at enhancing the regeneration of endangered plant-disperser systems may gain in efficacy by manipulating the spatial distribution of dispersers (e.g. through the creation of refuges and feeding sites) to create areas favourable to plant recruitment

It manages four observatories in Tenerife including the high altitude Izaña Atmospheric Observatory. The Izaña Atmospheric Observatory was inaugurated in 1916 and since that date has carried out uninterrupted meteorological and climatological observations, contributing towards a unique 100-year record in 2016. This reports are a summary of the many activities at the Izaña Atmospheric Research Center to the broader community. The combination of operational activities, research and development in state-of-the-art measurement techniques, calibration and validation and international cooperation encompass the vision of WMO to provide world leadership in expertise and international cooperation in weather, climate, hydrology and related environmental issues.[ES]El Centro de Investigación Atmosférica de Izaña (CIAI), que forma parte de la Agencia Estatal de Meteorología de España (AEMET), representa un centro de excelencia en ciencias atmosféricas.     Intraperitoneal drain placement and outcomes after elective colorectal surgery: international matched, prospective, cohort study

    Despite current guidelines, intraperitoneal drain placement after elective colorectal surgery remains widespread. Drains were not associated with earlier detection of intraperitoneal collections, but were associated with prolonged hospital stay and increased risk of surgical-site infections.Background Many surgeons routinely place intraperitoneal drains after elective colorectal surgery. However, enhanced recovery after surgery guidelines recommend against their routine use owing to a lack of clear clinical benefit. This study aimed to describe international variation in intraperitoneal drain placement and the safety of this practice. Methods COMPASS (COMPlicAted intra-abdominal collectionS after colorectal Surgery) was a prospective, international, cohort study which enrolled consecutive adults undergoing elective colorectal surgery (February to March 2020). The primary outcome was the rate of intraperitoneal drain placement. Secondary outcomes included: rate and time to diagnosis of postoperative intraperitoneal collections; rate of surgical site infections (SSIs); time to discharge; and 30-day major postoperative complications (Clavien-Dindo grade at least III). After propensity score matching, multivariable logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards regression were used to estimate the independent association of the secondary outcomes with drain placement. Results Overall, 1805 patients from 22 countries were included (798 women, 44.2 per cent; median age 67.0 years). The drain insertion rate was 51.9 per cent (937 patients). After matching, drains were not associated with reduced rates (odds ratio (OR) 1.33, 95 per cent c.i. 0.79 to 2.23; P = 0.287) or earlier detection (hazard ratio (HR) 0.87, 0.33 to 2.31; P = 0.780) of collections. Although not associated with worse major postoperative complications (OR 1.09, 0.68 to 1.75; P = 0.709), drains were associated with delayed hospital discharge (HR 0.58, 0.52 to 0.66; P < 0.001) and an increased risk of SSIs (OR 2.47, 1.50 to 4.05; P < 0.001). Conclusion Intraperitoneal drain placement after elective colorectal surgery is not associated with earlier detection of postoperative collections, but prolongs hospital stay and increases SSI risk
