    Search for supernova-produced 60Fe in a marine sediment

    An 60Fe peak in a deep-sea FeMn crust has been interpreted as due to the signature left by the ejecta of a supernova explosion close to the solar system 2.8 +/- 0.4 Myr ago [Knie et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 171103 (2004)]. To confirm this interpretation with better time resolution and obtain a more direct flux estimate, we measured 60Fe concentrations along a dated marine sediment. We find no 60Fe peak at the expected level from 1.7 to 3.2 Myr ago. However, applying the same chemistry used for the sediment, we confirm the 60Fe signal in the FeMn crust.     Geophysical and geochemical constraints on geoneutrino fluxes from Earth's mantle

    Knowledge of the amount and distribution of radiogenic heating in the mantle is crucial for understanding the dynamics of the Earth, including its thermal evolution, the style and planform of mantle convection, and the energetics of the core. Although the flux of heat from the surface of the planet is robustly estimated, the contributions of radiogenic heating and secular cooling remain poorly defined. Constraining the amount of heat-producing elements in the Earth will provide clues to understanding nebula condensation and planetary formation processes in early Solar System. Mantle radioactivity supplies power for mantle convection and plate tectonics, but estimates of mantle radiogenic heat production vary by a factor of more than 20. Recent experimental results demonstrate the potential for direct assessment of mantle radioactivity through observations of geoneutrinos, which are emitted by naturally occurring radionuclides. Predictions of the geoneutrino signal from the mantle exist for several established estimates of mantle composition. Here we present novel analyses, illustrating surface variations of the mantle geoneutrino signal for models of the deep mantle structure, including those based on seismic tomography. These variations have measurable differences for some models, allowing new and meaningful constraints on the dynamics of the planet.     Macroeconomic Fluctuations, Inequality, and Human Development

    This paper examines the two-way relationship between inequality and economic fluctuations, and the implications for human development. For years, the dominant paradigm in macroeconomics, which assumed that income distribution did not matter, at least for macroeconomic behavior, ignored inequality--both its role in causing crises and the effect of fluctuations in general, and crises in particular, on inequality. But the most recent financial crisis has shown the errors in this thinking, and these views are finally beginning to be questioned. Economists who had looked at the average equity of a homeowner--ignoring the distribution--felt comfortable that the economy could easily withstand a large fall in housing prices. When such a fall occurred, however, it had disastrous effects, because a large fraction of homeowners owed more on their homes than the value of the home, leading to waves of foreclosure and economic stress. Policy-makers and economists alike have begun to take note: inequality can contribute to volatility and the creation of crises, and volatility can contribute to inequality. Here, we explore the variety of channels through which inequality affects fluctuations and fluctuations affect inequality, and explore how some of the changes in our economy may have contributed to increased inequality and volatility both directly and indirectly. After describing the two-way relationship, the paper discusses hysteresis--the fact that the consequences of an economic downturn can be long-lived. Then, it examines how policy can either mitigate or exacerbate the inequality consequences of economic downturns, and shows how well-intentioned policies can sometimes be counterproductive. Finally, it links these issues to human development, especially in developing countries

    Gonadal function in male patients after treatment for malignant lymphomas, with emphasis on chemotherapy

    Gonadal function was assessed in male lymphoma survivors based on serum hormone levels (LH, FSH, testosterone, SHBG), and was related to treatment, age and observation time. Male patients ⩽50 years at diagnosis treated for Hodgkin's (HL) and/or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) at the Norwegian Radium Hospital from 1 January 1980 to 31 December 2002 were included. Five treatment groups were defined: 1: radiotherapy only and/or low gonadotoxic chemotherapy (both HL and NHL)(‘No/low'), 2: medium gonadotoxicity chemotherapy for NHL (‘med-NHL'), 3: medium gonadotoxicity chemotherapy for HL (‘med-HL'), 4: highly gonadotoxic chemotherapy for NHL (‘high-NHL'), 5: highly gonadotoxic chemotherapy for HL (‘high-HL'). Gonadal hormone levels were categorised into three groups: 1: All gonadal hormones within normal range (normal), 2: Isolated elevated FSH, with LH, SHBG and testosterone within normal range (exocrine hypogonadism), 3: Testosterone below and/or LH above normal range (endocrine hypogonadism). One hundred and forty-four (49%) of the patients had normal gonadal hormones, 60 (20%) displayed exocrine hypogonadism and almost one-third (n=90, 30%) had endocrine hypogonadism. Compared to those treated with no/low gonadotoxic chemotherapy patients from all other treatment groups had significantly elevated risk for exocrine hypogonadism. Patients from the other treatment groups, except those in the med-NHL group, also had significantly elevated risk for endocrine hypogonadism compared with the group treated with no/low gonadotoxic chemotherapy. Men aged above 50 years at survey were about five times more likely to have endocrine hypogonadism compared with those less than 40 years. Because of the adverse health effects following long-lasting endocrine hypogonadism, gonadal hormones should be assessed regularly in male lymphoma survivors, especially after treatment with alkylating agents and high-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell support and in male patients who are 50 years and older

    Kinematic analysis of the daily activity of drinking from a glass in a population with cervical spinal cord injury

    Background Three-dimensional kinematic analysis equipment is a valuable instrument for studying the execution of movement during functional activities of the upper limbs. The aim of this study was to analyze the kinematic differences in the execution of a daily activity such as drinking from a glass between two groups of patients with tetraplegia and a control group. Methods A total of 24 people were separated into three groups for analysis: 8 subjects with metameric level C6 tetraplegia, 8 subjects with metameric level C7 tetraplegia and 8 control subjects (CG). A set of active markers that emit infrared light were positioned on the upper limb. Two scanning units were used to record the sessions. The activity of drinking from a glass was broken down into a series of clearly identifiable phases to facilitate analysis. Movement times, velocities, and the joint angles of the shoulder, elbow and wrist in the three spatial planes were the variables analyzed. Results The most relevant differences between the three groups were in the wrist. Wrist palmar flexion during the back transport phase was greater in the patients with C6 and C7 tetraplegia than in the CG, whereas the highest wrist dorsal flexion values were in forward transport in the subjects with C6 or C7 tetraplegia, who required complete activation of the tenodesis effect to complete grasping. Conclusions A detailed description was made of the three-dimensional kinematic analysis of the task of drinking from a glass in healthy subjects and in two groups of patients with tetraplegia. This was a useful application of kinematic analysis of upper limb movement in a clinical setting. Better knowledge of the execution of this movement in each of these groups allows therapeutic recommendations to be specifically adapted to the functional deficit present. This information can be useful in designing wearable robots to compensate the performance of AVD, such as drinking, in people with cervical SCI

    UHECR arrival directions in the latest data from the original Auger and TA surface detectors and nearby galaxies

    The distribution of ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray arrival directions appears to be nearly isotropic except for a dipole moment of order 6×(E/10 EeV)6 \times (E/10~\mathrm{EeV}) per cent. Nonetheless, at the highest energies, as the number of possible candidate sources within the propagation horizon and the magnetic deflections both shrink, smaller-scale anisotropies might be expected to emerge. On the other hand, the flux suppression reduces the statistics available for searching for such anisotropies. In this work, we consider two different lists of candidate sources: a sample of nearby starburst galaxies and the 2MRS catalog tracing stellar mass within 250 Mpc. We combine surface-detector data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory until 2020 and the Telescope Array until 2019, and use them to test models in which UHECRs comprise an isotropic background and a foreground originating from the candidate sources and randomly deflected by magnetic fields. The free parameters of these models are the energy threshold, the signal fraction, and the search angular scale. We find a correlation between the arrival directions of 11.8%−3.1%+5.0%11.8\%_{-3.1\%}^{+5.0\%} of cosmic rays detected with E≥38 EeVE \ge 38~\mathrm{EeV} by Auger or with E≳49 EeVE \gtrsim 49~\mathrm{EeV} by TA and the position of nearby starburst galaxies on a 15.5∘−3.2∘+5.3∘{15.5^\circ}_{-3.2^\circ}^{+5.3^\circ} angular scale, with a 4.2σ post-trial significance, as well as a weaker correlation with the overall galaxy distribution
