The Politics of Resonance

‘GIB SIE WIEDER’1 is a series of two political compositions, dedicated to exceptional performers Garth Knox (viola d’amore) and Rhodri Davies (harp). In this project the central focus is on resonance in both a musical and wider socio-cultural sense. Finding the term closely correlated to the construction of gender, I direct my inner ear to the hidden background noises of the organisation of society. As a woman and composer, I perceive aural patterns of individual and political significance. In this work my aim is to to deconstruct engrained structures of resonance and assumptions of gender, and redefine them from a personal perspective as the basis for a new compositional identity. In this article, I identify my political perspective as an artist, and describe how this affects and stimulates my creative process. I discuss the compositional approach taken in the two compositions making up ‘GIB SIE WIEDER’ and their public performances in 2014

Rare and unique meteorites from Antarctica

The detection of Antarctic meteorites of Lunar and perhaps Martian origin, belongs to the most important discoveries in planetology during the last years. There is such a wealth of new information on differentiated and undifferentiated planetary bodies deduced from Antarctic meteorites that it is at present not possible to even qualitatively foresee the impact that these meteorites will have on the understanding of the formation and differentiation of large and small planets in the solar system. UWG -TRNSYS Simulation Coupling for Urban Building Energy Modelling

This paper presents a new methodology to carry out building performance simulation at the district scale integrating the building thermal model TRNSYS with the climate model ‘Urban Weather Generator’ (UWG). The integrated methodology is designed to include the microclimatic modifications induced by urban environments on buildings’ cooling load calculation. The impact of shadows, air temperature increase and urban radiant environment on building cooling performance has been highlighted for hot arid climates (Antofagasta, Chile). Results indicate that the impact of urban context on energy performance of buildings at the neighbourhood scale varies significantly with building typology and urban tissue densit

Ability, parental background and educationpolicy: empirical evidence from a socialexperiment

Following the great expansion of secondary education in the UnitedStates between 1910 and 1940, Sweden was one of the first Western Europeancountries to attempt such an expansion by increasing the years ofcompulsory schooling and and improving access to academic type educationby abolishing early selection. The reform was preceded by a large scale areabased social experiment where 25% of the contry?s municipalities were assignedto the reform. We use this assignment, together with rich individualdata to evaluate this major educational interventions. Our key findings arethat this reform increased the educational attainment of individuals withunskilled fathers. In addition it caused significant and large increases in theearnings of those with unskilled fathers and above median ability. The effect of a social experiment in education

The impact of compulsory schooling laws as well as the abolition of early selection by ability remain important issues in the educational debate. These issues were the focus of a major education reform in Sweden which was implemented in the 60s. The reform was preceded by a "social experiment" in which only a proportion of municipalities received the new school system. We use survey data linked with tax records covering 10% of one of the cohorts who were educated during the experimental period, to evaluate the impact of the reform on educational attainment and earnings. We find significant increases in the educational attainment of individuals from poorer backgrounds. We also find that the largest impact on earnings was for higher ability individuals from poorer backgrounds. In addition we estimate the returns to education for those affected by the reform. By exploiting the differential impact of the reform by county we are able, in some cases, to distinguish its direct effect on earnings from the effect it had by increasing the quantity of education. We find that the main source of increased earnings came from increasing educational attainment.

Intergenerational Mobility, Human Capital Transmission and the Earnings of Second-Generation Immigrants in Sweden

We compare the intergenerational earnings mobility of immigrants with natives in Sweden. We find an overall convergence in average earnings between immigrants and natives. This convergence hides a divergence in average earnings between groups of immigrants with different ethnic origins. We find that, on average, immigrants have a lower intergenerational earnings mobility, also (on average) within groups with similar ethnic backgrounds. Immigrants with a relatively low intergenerational earnings mobility increased their average earnings more in the second generation, thereby supporting the idea that low intergenerational earnings mobility can be interpreted as a high degree of intergenerational transmission of human capital.intergenerational income mobility; intergenerational earnings correlation; Becker-Tomes model; ethnic capital

The Evolution of Income Inequality During the Rise of the Swedish Welfare State 1951 to 1973

We analyse the change in family gross income inequality between 1951 and 1973. We use two new samples of the Swedish population from 1951 and 1956 containing tax register data, and compare the results with those obtained from the Swedish Level of Living survey from 1967 and 1973. Gini coefficients, four different Generalised entropy measures as well as decile group shares of total income are calculated. We also do two different decompositions: one between different demographic groups and one between the male and female component of family income. Finally, we examine to what extent zero family income records really reflect low economic welfare by using interview data from the 1968 Swedish Level of Living Survey.Income distribution; Household income
