    ProppML: A Complete Annotation Scheme for Proppian Morphologies

    We give a preliminary description of ProppML, an annotation scheme designed to capture all the components of a Proppian-style morphological analysis of narratives. This work represents the first fully complete annotation scheme for Proppian morphologies, going beyond previous annotation schemes such as PftML, ProppOnto, Bod et al., and our own prior work. Using ProppML we have annotated Propp\u27s morphology on fifteen tales (18,862 words) drawn from his original corpus of Russian folktales. This is a significantly larger set of data than annotated in previous studies. This pilot corpus was constructed via double annotation by two highly trained annotators, whose annotations were then combined after discussion with a third highly trained adjudicator, resulting in gold standard data which is appropriate for training machine learning algorithms. Agreement measures calculated between both annotators show very good agreement (F_1>0.75, kappa>0.9 for functions; F_1>0.6 for moves; and F_1>0.8, kappa>0.6 for dramatis personae). This is the first robust demonstration of reliable annotation of Propp\u27s system

    Learning a Better Motif Index: Toward Automated Motif Extraction

    Motifs are distinctive recurring elements found in folklore, and are used by folklorists to categorize and find tales across cultures and track the genetic relationships of tales over time. Motifs have significance beyond folklore as communicative devices found in news, literature, press releases, and propaganda that concisely imply a large constellation of culturally-relevant information. Until now, folklorists have only extracted motifs from narratives manually, and the conceptual structure of motifs has not been formally laid out. In this short paper we propose that it is possible to automate the extraction of both existing and new motifs from narratives using supervised learning techniques and thereby possible to learn a computational model of how folklorists determine motifs. Automatic extraction would enable the construction of a truly comprehensive motif index, which does not yet exist, as well as the automatic detection of motifs in cultural materials, opening up a new world of narrative information for analysis by anyone interested in narrative and culture. We outline an experimental design, and report on our efforts to produce a structured form of Thompson\u27s motif index, as well as a development annotation of motifs in a small collection of Russian folklore. We propose several initial computational, supervised approaches, and describe several possible metrics of success. We describe lessons learned and difficulties encountered so far, and outline our plan going forward

    Computational Models of Narrative: Review of a Workshop

    On October 8-10, 2009 an interdisciplinary group met at the Wylie Center in Beverley, Massachusetts to evaluate the state of the art in the computational modeling of narrative. Three important findings emerged: (1) current work in computational modeling is described by three different levels of representation; (2) there is a paucity of studies at the highest, most abstract level aimed at inferring the meaning or message of the narrative; and (3) there is a need to establish a standard data bank of annotated narratives, analogous to the Penn Treebank

    Comparing Extant Story Classifiers: Results & New Directions

    Having access to a large set of stories is a necessary first step for robust and wide-ranging computational narrative modeling; happily, language data - including stories - are increasingly available in electronic form. Unhappily, the process of automatically separating stories from other forms of written discourse is not straightforward, and has resulted in a data collection bottleneck. Therefore researchers have sought to develop reliable, robust automatic algorithms for identifying story text mixed with other non-story text. In this paper we report on the reimplementation and experimental comparison of the two approaches to this task: Gordon\u27s unigram classifier, and Corman\u27s semantic triplet classifier. We cross-analyze their performance on both Gordon\u27s and Corman\u27s corpora, and discuss similarities, differences, and gaps in the performance of these classifiers, and point the way forward to improving their approaches

    OH yields from the CH3CO+O-2 reaction using an internal standard

    Laser flash photolysis of CH3C(O)OH at 248 nm was used to create equal zero time yields of CH3CO and OH. The absolute OH yield from the CH3CO + O2 (+M) reaction was determined by following the OH temporal profile using the zero time OH concentration as an internal standard. The OH yield from CH3CO + O2 (+M) was observed to decrease with increasing pressure with an extrapolated zero pressure yield close to unity (1.1 ± 0.2, quoted uncertainties correspond to 95% confidence limits). The results are in quantitative agreement with those obtained from 248 nm acetone photolysis in the presence of O2

    Deeply dredged submarine HIMU glasses from the Tuvalu Islands, Polynesia: Implications for volatile budgets of recycled oceanic crust

    Ocean island basalts (OIB) with extremely radiogenic Pb-isotopic signatures are melts of a mantle component called HIMU (high µ, high 238U/204Pb). Until now, deeply dredged submarine HIMU glasses have not been available, which has inhibited complete geochemical (in particular, volatile element) characterization of the HIMU mantle. We report major, trace and volatile element abundances in a suite of deeply dredged glasses from the Tuvalu Islands. Three Tuvalu glasses with the most extreme HIMU signatures have F/Nd ratios (35.6 ± 3.6) that are higher than the ratio (∼21) for global OIB and MORB, consistent with elevated F/Nd ratios in end-member HIMU Mangaia melt inclusions. The Tuvalu glasses with the most extreme HIMU composition have Cl/K (0.11–0.12), Br/Cl (0.0024), and I/Cl (5–6 × 10−5) ratios that preclude significant assimilation of seawater-derived Cl. The new HIMU glasses that are least degassed for H2O have low H2O/Ce ratios (75–84), similar to ratios identified in end-member OIB glasses with EM1 and EM2 signatures, but significantly lower than H2O/Ce ratios (119–245) previously measured in melt inclusions from Mangaia. CO2-H2O equilibrium solubility models suggest that these HIMU glasses (recovered in two different dredges at 2500–3600 m water depth) have eruption pressures of 295–400 bars. We argue that degassing is unlikely to significantly reduce the primary melt H2O. Thus, the lower H2O/Ce in the HIMU Tuvalu glasses is a mantle signature.     Inequalities and stillbirth in the UK: a meta-narrative review

    Objective To review what is known about the relationship between stillbirth and inequalities from different disciplinary perspectives to inform stillbirth prevention strategies. Design Systematic review using the meta-narrative method. Setting Studies undertaken in the UK. Data sources Scoping phase: experts in field, exploratory electronic searches and handsearching. Systematic searches phase: Nine databases with no geographical or date restrictions. Non-English language studies were excluded. Study selection Any investigation of stillbirth and inequalities with a UK component. Data extraction and synthesis Three authors extracted data and assessed study quality. Data were summarised, tabulated and presented graphically before synthesis of the unfolding storyline by research tradition; and then of the commonalities, differences and interplays between narratives into resultant summary meta-themes. Results Fifty-four sources from nine distinctive research traditions were included. The evidence of associations between social inequalities and stillbirth spanned 70 years. Across research traditions, there was recurrent evidence of the social gradient remaining constant or increasing, fuelling repeated calls for action (meta-theme 1: something must be done). There was less evidence of an effective response to these calls. Data pertaining to socioeconomic, area and ethnic disparities were routinely collected, but not consistently recorded, monitored or reported in relation to stillbirth (meta-theme 2: problems of precision). Many studies stressed the interplay of socioeconomic status, deprivation or ethnicity with aggregated factors including heritable, structural, environmental and lifestyle factors (meta-theme 3: moving from associations towards intersectionality and intervention(s)). No intervention studies were identified. Conclusion Research investigating inequalities and stillbirth in the UK is underdeveloped. This is despite repeated evidence of an association between stillbirth risk and poverty, and stillbirth risk, poverty and ethnicity. A specific research forum is required to lead the development of research and policy in this area, which can harness the multiple relevant research perspectives and address the intersections between different policy areas.     The role of healthcare professionals in encouraging parents to see and hold their stillborn baby: a meta-synthesis of qualitative studies.

    Background: Globally, during 2013 there were three million recorded stillbirths. Where clinical guidelines exist some recommend that professionals do not encourage parental contact. The guidance is based on quantitative evidence that seeing and holding the baby is not beneficial for everyone, but has been challenged by bereaved parents' organisations. We aim to inform future guideline development through a synthesis of qualitative studies reporting data relevant to the research question; how does the approach of healthcare professionals to seeing and holding the baby following stillbirth impact parents views and experiences? Methods/Findings: Using a predetermined search strategy of PubMed and PsychINFO we identified robust qualitative studies reporting bereaved parental views and/or experiences relating to seeing and holding their stillborn baby (final search 24 February, 2014). Eligible studies were English language, reporting parental views, with gestational loss >20weeks. Quality was independently assessed by three authors using a validated tool. We used meta-ethnographic techniques to identify key themes and a line of argument synthesis. We included 12 papers, representing the views of 333 parents (156 mothers, 150 fathers, and 27 couples) from six countries. The final themes were: "[Still]birth: Nature of care is paramount", "Real babies: Perfect beauties, monsters and spectres", and "Opportunity of a lifetime lost." Our line-of-argument synthesis highlights the contrast between all parents need to know their baby, with the time around birth being the only time memories can be made, and the variable ability that parents have to articulate their preferences at that time. Thus, we hypothesised that how health professionals approach contact between parents and their stillborn baby demands a degree of active management. An important limitation of this paper is all included studies originated from high income, westernised countries raising questions about the findings transferability to other cultural contexts. We do not offer new evidence to answer the question "Should parents see and hold their stillborn baby?", instead our findings advance understanding of how professionals can support parents to make appropriate decisions in a novel, highly charged and dynamic situation. Conclusions: Guidelines could be more specific in their recommendations regarding parental contact. The role of healthcare professionals in encouraging parents to see and hold their stillborn baby is paramount. Parental choice not to see their baby, apprehension, or uncertainty should be continuously revisited in the hours after birth as the opportunity for contact is fleeting and final
