    Agronomic, economic and ecological aspects of the papaya (Carica papaya) production in Tabasco, Mexico

    The cultivation of papaya is important in the tropic because it provides source of income to the farmer within a short time. Statistical data were obtained from farmers located in the Chontalpa, Rios and Centro-Sierra regions; the size of the survey was 67 farmers. The study shows the results of the farmers’ problem in a drastic reduction of their productivity because of the virosis and low prices in commercialization. The farmers were classified into three levels of technology, “low”, “middle” and “high”. The first one covers 88% of the farmers in seasonal conditions in contrast with the high technology that concentrates 4.5% in irrigation conditions. According to the technology used, the fertilizer shows more yields. Economically, the high technology had an internal tax return of 0.43 in comparison with the low technology of 0.25, which means that the investment is recovered with different yields. However, the use of high technology makes the system more competitive. Key words

    Automatic Seizure Detection Based on Star Graph Topological Indices

    [Abstract] The recognition of seizures is very important for the diagnosis of patients with epilepsy. The seizure is a process of rhythmic discharge in brain and occurs rarely and unpredictably. This behavior generates a need of an automatic detection of seizures by using the signals of long-term electroencephalography (EEG) recordings. Due to the non-stationary character of EEG signals, the conventional methods of frequency analysis are not the best alternative to obtain good results in diagnostic purpose. The present work proposes a method of EEG signal analysis based on star graph topological indices (SGTIs) for the first time. The signal information, such as amplitude and time occurrence, is codified into invariant SGTIs which are the basis for the classification models that can discriminate the epileptic EEG records from the non-epileptic ones. The method with SGTIs and the simplest linear discriminant methods provide similar results to those previously published, which are based on the time-frequency analysis and artificial neural networks.     Predicting Inflow Flow in Hydraulic Dams Using Artificial Neural Networks

This study focuses on the Portodemouros dam (located between the provinces of A Coruña and Pontevedra), where a model based on a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) artificial neural network has been implemented to predict dam inflow. The results demonstrate the well-established effectiveness of the LSTM network in flow prediction Dongkyuna and Seokkoob (2021); Jo and Jung (2023); Li et al. (2020) applied to the Portodemouros dam compared to other models. This comparison has already been performed in other studies with both mathematical models Amirreza et al. (2022); Ansori and Anwar (2022); A.R1 et al. (2018); Beck et al. (2017); Ciabatta et al. (2016); Costabile et al. (2020); Fan et al. (2013); Hermanovsky et al. (2017); Kim et al. (2019); Vargas-Garay et al. (2018); Zhong et al. (2018), genetic programming Aytek et al. (2008); Havl´ıˇcek et al. (2013); Heˇrmanovsk´y et al. (2017); Rabuñal et al. (2007) and other machine learning algorithms Jo and Jung (2023). Combining precipitation data from multiple regions and meteorological forecasts significantly enhances the model’s ability to anticipate variations in dam inflow. This improved accuracy is essential for early flood detection and informed decision-making in dam operation.     Weapply an electric field to amoderately conducting liquid surrounded by another coflowing liquid, all inside a glass-based microfluidic device, to study nonaxisymmetric instabilities.Wefind that the bending of the electrified jet results in a steady-state, helicoidal structure with a constant opening angle. Remarkably, the characteristic phase speed of the helicoidalwave only depends on the charge carried by the jet in the helicoidal region and its stability critically depends on the properties of the coflowing liquid. In fact, the steady-state helical structure becomes chaotic when the longest characteristic time is that of the inner liquid rather than that of the outer coflowing liquid. We also perform a numerical analysis to show that the natural preference of the jet is to adopt the conical helix structure observed experimentally

    Gestational hypothyroxinemia affects its offspring with a reduced suppressive capacity impairing the outcome of the experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis

    Indexación: Scopus.Hypothyroxinemia (Hpx) is a thyroid hormone deficiency (THD) condition highly frequent during pregnancy, which although asymptomatic for the mother, it can impair the cognitive function of the offspring. Previous studies have shown that maternal hypothyroidism increases the severity of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an autoimmune disease model for multiple sclerosis (MS). Here, we analyzed the immune response after EAE induction in the adult offspring gestated in Hpx. Mice gestated in Hpx showed an early appearance of EAE symptoms and the increase of all parameters of the disease such as: the pathological score, spinal cord demyelination, and immune cell infiltration in comparison to the adult offspring gestated in euthyroidism. Isolated CD4+CD25+ T cells from spleen of the offspring gestated in Hpx that suffer EAE showed reduced capacity to suppress proliferation of effector T cells (TEff) after being stimulated with anti-CD3 and anti-CD28 antibodies. Moreover, adoptive transfer experiments of CD4+CD25+ T cells from the offspring gestated in Hpx suffering EAE to mice that were induced with EAE showed that the receptor mice suffer more intense EAE pathological score. Even though, no significant differences were detected in the frequency of Treg cells and IL-10 content in the blood, spleen, and brain between mice gestated in Hpx or euthyroidism, T cells CD4+CD25+ from spleen have reduced capacity to differentiate in vitro to Treg and to produce IL-10. Thus, our data support the notion that maternal Hpx can imprint the immune response of the offspring suffering EAE probably due to a reduced capacity to trigger suppression.     Integrating Deep-Web Information Sources

    Deep-web information sources are difficult to integrate into automated business processes if they only provide a search form. A wrapping agent is a piece of software that allows a developer to query such information sources without worrying about the details of interacting with such forms. Our goal is to help soft ware engineers construct wrapping agents that interpret queries written in high-level structured languages. We think that this shall definitely help reduce integration costs because this shall relieve developers from the burden of transforming their queries into low-level interactions in an ad-hoc manner. In this paper, we report on our reference framework, delve into the related work, and highlight current research challenges.     The intrinsically disordered distal face of nucleoplasmin recognizes distinct oligomerization states of histones

    The role of Nucleoplasmin (NP) as a H2A-H2B histone chaperone has been extensively characterized. To understand its putative interaction with other histone ligands, we have characterized its ability to bind H3-H4 and histone octamers. We find that the chaperone forms distinct complexes with histones, which differ in the number of molecules that build the assembly and in their spatial distribution. When complexed with H3-H4 tetramers or histone octamers, two NP pentamers form an ellipsoidal particle with the histones located at the center of the assembly, in stark contrast with the NP/H2A-H2B complex that contains up to five histone dimers bound to one chaperone pentamer. This particular assembly relies on the ability of H3-H4 to form tetramers either in solution or as part of the octamer, and it is not observed when a variant of H3 (H3C110E), unable to form stable tetramers, is used instead of the wild-type protein. Our data also suggest that the distal face of the chaperone is involved in the interaction with distinct types of histones, as supported by electron microscopy analysis of the different NP/histone complexes.     Comparisons of Production Costs and Profit of Three Different Technology Levels of Papaya Production in Tabasco, Mexico

    The survey was carried out from September 2006 to January 2007 in three papaya production sites located in main papaya production zones in Tabasco; SE Mexico. There are differences in size of the cultivated area, in the yield of the papaya as well as in production costs and profit, according to the different technology levels in the farming systems: low, medium and high technology cultivation level. The financial evaluations were carried out in three sites with different productive technologies. The comparison of the agronomic and economic traits results for low technology level in: V AN of 2359.00 USD, BCR in 1.9 and an equilibrium point of 3750.00 USD, TIR of 0.25. In order to avoid loses, a quantity of 10714 kg papaya should be sold. In medium technology VAN is 1605.10 USD, BCR is 1.7, TIR 0.20 and the equilibrium point is 12800.00 USD. 36571 kg of papaya should be yearly sold. In high technology level VAN is 11749.40, BCR is 2.73, TIR 0.43 and the equilibrium point is 12187.50 USD, 34821 kg papaya should be sold yearly. The indicators showed that all three levels are profitable and economically viable

    Iron therapy substantially restores qEEG maturational lag among iron-deficient anemic infants

    Objective: To use quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) to assess the impact of iron-deficiency anemia on central nervous system maturation in the first year of life. Method: Twenty-five infants (3–12 months old) presenting ferropenic anemia (IDA) and 25 healthy controls (CTL1), matched by age/gender with the former, were studied in two stages. Electroencephalogram during spontaneous sleep was recorded from all participants; the fast Fourier transform was calculated to obtain absolute power (AP) and relative power (RP) qEEG measures. In the first stage, a qEEG comparison between CTL1 and IDA was performed. Second stage consisted in comparing qEEG of the IDA infants before and after supplementation with iron (IDA-IS group), and comparing qEEG of the IDA-IS group with another control age-matched group (CTL2). Non-parametric multivariate permutation tests (NPT) were applied to assess differences between CTL1 and IDA groups, as well as IDA vs. IDA-IS, and IDA-IS vs. CTL2. Results: More power in slow frequency bands and less power in fast frequency bands in 64% of IDA babies were observed. NPT evinced higher alpha AP and RP (P < 0.001), less theta AP, and less delta and theta RP in CTL1 than in IDA. After iron-restoration therapy, alpha AP and RP increased while theta AP and theta and delta RP decreased, reaching almost normal values. Discussion: This work reveals CNS developmental delay through the study of qEEG (less rapid and more slow frequencies) which recovered significantly with iron supplementation.     Effect of OAS genes on SARS-CoV-2 infection and the induction of innate immune responses

    Resumen del trabajo presentado en el 8th European Congress of Virology, celebrado en Gdańsk (Polonia), del 4 al 7 de mayo de 2023Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections cause different clinical symptoms ranging from asymptomatic patients to patients suffering severe respiratory disease leading to death in some of them. Genetic and functional studies have shown inborn-errors of interferon (IFN)-related genes in severe COVID-19 patients explaining why some young patients devoid of co-morbidities succumbed to infection. In addition, very large genomic studies identified common genetic variants affecting the expression and splicing of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs) of the 2",5"- oligoadenylate (2-5A) synthetase (OAS) family associated with COVID-19 severity. We have sequenced the whole genome of 274 patients who required hospitalization after SARS-CoV-2 infection, finding ultrarare mutations in OAS1 and OAS3 genes. Upon double-stranded (ds)RNA binding, the OAS1, OAS2, and OAS3 proteins synthetize 2¿- 5¿olygoadenylates which activate the endonuclease RNAseL. This endonuclease degrades viral and cellular RNAs, inhibiting viral replication. We have analyzed the effect of OAS1 and OAS3 genetic variants identified in our patients, and found that some of them impair the RNAseL activation. In addition, by using OAS3 knock-out cells generated in our laboratory and performing overexpression experiments, we have shown that OAS3 negatively modulates proinflammatory responses induced by immune challenges, and that the activation of the RNAseL activity seems necessary for this function. In addition, by using OAS3 knock-out mice infected with SARS-CoV-2 or treated with the double-stranded RNA analog poly(I:C), we have shown that OAS3 deficiency leads to a higher mouse susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection and that OAS3 counteracts the induction of innate immune responses in the mouse infectedlungs, leading to a higher inflammatory response in OAS3 knock-out mice, compared to the parental mice. Given the contribution of exacerbated inflammatory responses to COVID-19 disease severity, our results suggest that OAS1/OAS3 could play a role limiting the severity of the clinical symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 infection
