    Proposal of a method for fluorimetric analysis of malvin in red wines

    A fluorimetric method for the quantitative determination of malvin (malvidin 3,5-diglucoside) in red wines is described. The method is based on previous fractionation of the wine in a Polyclar AT column and later formation of a fluorophore, by oxidation of the malvin. The proposed method has good precision and accuracy and when applied to hybrid red wines affords results significantly comparable with those obtained by HPLC

    Koilocytes are enriched for alkaline-labile sites

    This study investigated possible variations in the chromatin structure of koilocytes resulting from human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Alkaline-labile sites (ALS) were detected with the DNA breakage detection–fluorescence in situ hybridization (DBD-FISH) technique using a whole human genome DNA probe obtained from individuals without koilocytosis. The variable levels of ALS present were measured quantitatively using image analysis after whole-genome DNA hybridization. A significant increase in the number of ALS was observed in koilocytes compared with normal cells. We demonstrated that the presence of ALS could be an indicator of chromatin change in koilocytes caused by HPV infection

    Age-structure, growth and reproduction of the introduced pumpkinseed (lepomis gibbosa, l. 1758) in a tributary of the Guadalquivir river (southern Spain)

    The age structure, growth and reproduction of Lepomis gibbosa (L. 1758) (= L. gibbosus) was studied from March 1993 to September 1994 in a tributary stream of the Guadalquivir River. The maximum age observed was 5+ years both in males and females. In the O+ group, seasonal growth began in February and lasted 8 months. Males and females matured during their second year of life (l+). There were no significant differences in the overall sex-ratio, which was 1: 1.1 (677 males to 745 females). Reproductive activity started in MarcWApril and lasted until AugusUSeptember. During this period, females spawned 2 batches of eggs. The relationship between fecundity (F) and fork length (&, mm) was: F=5.09 % 279 (1993) and F=85.81 L, ' 56 (1994). The maximum contribution to the fecundity of the population was observed in the 4+ female group. The reproductive effort was maximun in the 3+ group. Compared with the American pumpkinseed populations that have been studied, the lifehistory patterns of this stock are characterized by low annual growth, early maturity, reduced longevity and low fecundity

    Spatiotemporal characterization of Ensemble Prediction Systems – the Mean-Variance of Logarithms (MVL) diagram

    We present a novel approach to characterize and graphically represent the spatiotemporal evolution of ensembles using a simple diagram. To this aim we analyze the fluctuations obtained as differences between each member of the ensemble and the control. The lognormal character of these fluctuations suggests a characterization in terms of the first two moments of the logarithmic transformed values. On one hand, the mean is associated with the exponential growth in time. On the other hand, the variance accounts for the spatial correlation and localization of fluctuations. In this paper we introduce the MVL (Mean-Variance of Logarithms) diagram to intuitively represent the interplay and evolution of these two quantities. We show that this diagram uncovers useful information about the spatiotemporal dynamics of the ensemble. Some universal features of the diagram are also described, associated either with the nonlinear system or with the ensemble method and illustrated using both toy models and numerical weather prediction systems

    An extensive K-bentonite as an indicator of a super-eruption in northern Iberia 477 My ago

    Zircon and monazite ID-TIMS U-Pb dating of four Lower Ordovician altered ash-fall tuff beds (K-Bentonites) in NW Iberia provided coetaneous ages of 477.5±1, 477±1.3 Ma, 477.2±1.1 Ma and 477.3±1 Ma, with a pooled concordia age of 477.2±0.74 Ma. A conservative estimation of the volume and mass of the studied K-bentonite beds (using data from the Cantabrian Zone) returns a minimum volume for the preserved deposits of ca. 37.5 km3 (Volcanic Explosivity Index - VEI = 6, Colossal). When considering other putative equivalent beds in other parts of Iberia and neighbouring realms the volume of ejecta associated to this event would make it reach the Supervolcanic-Apocalyptic status (VEI=8, >1000 km3). Contrary to most cases of this kind of gargantuan eruption events, the studied magmatic event took place in relation to continental margin extension and thinning and not to plate convergence. We speculate that a geochronologically coincident large caldera event observed in the geological record of NW Iberia could be ground zero of this super-eruption

    Effectiveness of a Multifactorial Intervention in the First 1000 Days of Life to Prevent Obesity and Overweight in Childhood: Study Protoco

    (1) Background: Obesity is a global health problem, and its prevention must be a priority goal of public health, especially considering the seriousness of the problem among children. It is known that fetal and early postnatal environments may favor the appearance of obesity in later life. In recent years, the impact of the programs to prevent obesity in childhood has been scarce. The aim of this research is to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention based on the concept of early programming. (2) Methods: Non-randomized controlled trial design. Inclusion criteria are: two-year-old infants whose gestational period begins in the 14 months following the start of the intervention, and whose mothers have made the complete follow-up of their pregnancy in the same clinical unit of the study. The intervention will be developed over all the known factors that affect early programming, during pregnancy up to 2 years of life. Data will be collected through a data collection sheet by the paediatricians. A unibivariate and multivariate analysis of the data will be carried out. (3) Ethics and dissemination: The trial does not involve any risk to participants and their offspring. Signed informed consent is obtained from all participants. Ethical approval has been obtained. (4) Results: It is expected that this study will provide evidence on the importance of the prevention of obesity from the critical period of the first 1000 days of life, being able to establish this as a standard intervention in primary care

    Ground characterization of building energy models

    The calibration of building energy models is crucial for their use in some applications that depend on their accuracy for adequate performance, such as demand response and model predictive control (MPC). In general, energy models offer many possibilities/strategies when characterizing a construction system, and such a characterization is key when analyzing both its thermal behavior and its energy impact. This research analyzes the different ways to characterize the thermal interaction of the building energy model (BEM) with the ground, comparing conventional approaches with new approaches based on both optimization of the former and dynamic ground characterizations. Using a model adjusted to a real case study, each of the existing options are analyzed, in which a different control of the ground temperature both in terms of its temporal oscillation and its location in the building (based on thermal zones) is taken into account. Exhaustive monitoring of a real building and measuring the ground and ground floor surface temperatures have made establishing which EnergyPlus components/objects best characterize the ground-slab interaction possible, both in terms of the simplicity of modeling and the cost (economic and technical) required for each of them.     Se presenta 1 caso de pseudotumor del pisiforme con dolor crónico en eminencia hipotenar y compresión del nervio cubital en un varón de 33 años. El diagnóstico histológico definitivo fue de callo hipertrófico con degeneración cartilaginosa focal del hueso pisiforme. Se presupone el origen laboral de la lesión, secundaria a microtraumatismos repetidos por martillo neumático. Se practicó exéresis simple del hueso, con un resultado excelente a los 6 meses. Los autores piensan que el tratamiento de elección hubiera sido la inmovilización precoz al comienzo de la sintomatología.A case of pseudotumor of the pisiform vvith cronic pain in the hipothenar eminence and compression neuropathy of the ulnar nerve in Guyon's canal in a 33 year old man is reported. Pathologic diagnosis was consistent vvith hypertrophic fracture callus and focal degenerative changes in the articular surface of the pisiform. Repetitive minor trauma in his job as a miner, while using pneumatic hammer is presumed to be the main etiologic factor. Simple excision of the pisiform was performed vvith excelent functional result at 6 months.
