Chemosensitivity of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea-induced rat mammary tumours treated with 5-fluorouracil at a dose of 100 mg kg(-1) i.p. was assessed by using diffusion-weighted 1H-MRS to measure the average diffusion coefficient (ADC) of water in the tumour tissue. ADC measurements prior to any therapy correlated positively with necrotic fraction. Tumours with low initial ADC (< 0.95 x 10(9) m2 s(-1)) showed an increase in ADC 7 days after treatment, whereas tumours with a high initial ADC (> 1.2 x 10(9) m2 s(-1)) showed a decrease. All tumours decreased significantly in volume (P < 0.05) 2, 5 and 7 days after treatment. At day 7 post-treatment, tumours with a high pre-treatment ADC started to regrow. The initial ADC value, as well as changes after treatment predict tumour chemosensitivity, which could be clinically relevant

Higher Derivative Corrections to Eleven Dimensional Supergravity via Local Supersymmetry

In this paper we derive higher derivative corrections to the eleven dimensional supergravity by applying the Noether method with respect to the N=1 local supersymmetry. An ansatz for the higher derivative effective action, which includes quartic terms of the Riemann tensor, is parametrized by 132 parameters. Then we show that by the requirement of the local supersymmetry, the higher derivative effective action is essentially described by two parameters. The bosonic parts of these two superinvariants completely match with the known results obtained by the perturbative calculations in the type IIA superstring theory. Since the calculations are long and systematic, we build the computer programming to check the cancellation of the variations under the local supersymmetry. This is an extended version of our previous paper hep-th/0508204.Comment: 67 pages, no figure, references added, typos correcte

On Four-Point Functions of Half-BPS Operators in General Dimensions

We study four-point correlation functions of half-BPS operators of arbitrary weight for all dimensions d=3,4,5,6 where superconformal theories exist. Using harmonic superspace techniques, we derive the superconformal Ward identities for these correlators and present them in a universal form. We then solve these identities, employing Jack polynomial expansions. We show that the general solution is parameterized by a set of arbitrary two-variable functions, with the exception of the case d=4, where in addition functions of a single variable appear. We also discuss the operator product expansion using recent results on conformal partial wave amplitudes in arbitrary dimension.Comment: The discussion of the case d=6 expanded; references added/correcte

Some Systematics of the Coupling Constant Dependence of N=4 Yang-Mills

The operator, O_\tau, that generates infinitesimal changes of the coupling constant in N=4 Yang-Mills sits in the same supermultiplet as the superconformal currents. We show how superconformal current Ward identities determine a class of terms in the operator product expansion of O_\tau with any other operator. In certain cases, this leads to constraints on the coupling dependence of correlation functions in N=4 Yang-Mills. As an application, we demonstrate the exact non-renormalization of two and certain three-point correlation functions of BPS operators.Comment: 56 pages, LaTeX; amended and expanded arguments, added reference

Genome editing poses ethical problems that we cannot ignore

    Get PDF
The ability to precisely and accurately change almost any part of any genome, even in complex species such as humans, may soon become a reality through genome editing. But with great power comes great responsibility – and few subjects elicit such heated debates about moral rights and wrongs. Although genetic engineering techniques have been around for some time, genome editing can achieve this with lower error rates, more simply and cheaply than ever – although the technology is certainly not yet perfect. Genome editing offers a greater degree of control and precision in how specific DNA sequences are changed. It could be used in basic science, for human health, or improvements to crops. There are a variety of techniques but clustered regularly inter-spaced short palindromic repeats, or CRISPR, is perhaps the foremost. CRISPR has prompted recent calls for a genome editing moratorium from a group of concerned US academics. Because it is the easiest technique to set up and so could be quickly and widely adopted, the fear is that it may be put into use far too soon – outstripping our understanding of its safety implications and preventing any opportunity to think about how such powerful tools should be controlled. Ethical concerns over genetic modification are not new, particularly when it comes to humans. While we don’t think genome editing gives rise to any completely new ethical concerns, there is more to gene editing than just genetic modification..

Superconformal transformations are derived for the N=2,4supermultipletscorrespondingtothesimplestchiralprimaryoperators.Theseareappliedtotwo,threeandfourpointcorrelationfunctions.When\N=2,4 supermultiplets corresponding to the simplest chiral primary operators. These are applied to two, three and four point correlation functions. When \N=4,resultsareobtainedforthethreepointfunctionofvariousdescendantoperators,includingtheenergymomentumtensorandSU(4)current.Forboth, results are obtained for the three point function of various descendant operators, including the energy momentum tensor and SU(4) current. For both \N=2$ or 4 superconformal identities are derived for the functions of the two conformal invariants appearing in the four point function for the chiral primary operator. These are solved in terms of a single arbitrary function of the two conformal invariants and one or three single variable functions. The results are applied to the operator product expansion using the exact formula for the contribution of an operator in the operator product expansion in four dimensions to a scalar four point function. Explicit expressions representing exactly the contribution of both long and possible short supermultiplets to the chiral primary four point function are obtained. These are applied to give the leading perturbative and large N corrections to the scale dimensions of long supermultiplets.Comment: 75 pages, plain TeX file using harvmac; revised version, minor corrections and extra referenc

Noncommutative vector bundles over fuzzy CP^N and their covariant derivatives

We generalise the construction of fuzzy CP^N in a manner that allows us to access all noncommutative equivariant complex vector bundles over this space. We give a simplified construction of polarization tensors on S^2 that generalizes to complex projective space, identify Laplacians and natural noncommutative covariant derivative operators that map between the modules that describe noncommuative sections. In the process we find a natural generalization of the Schwinger-Jordan construction to su(n) and identify composite oscillators that obey a Heisenberg algebra on an appropriate Fock space.Comment: 34 pages, v2 contains minor corrections to the published versio

Superfield Theories in Tensorial Superspaces and the Dynamics of Higher Spin Fields

We present the superfield generalization of free higher spin equations in tensorial superspaces and analyze tensorial supergravities with GL(n) and SL(n) holonomy as a possible framework for the construction of a non-linear higher spin field theory. Surprisingly enough, we find that the most general solution of the supergravity constraints is given by a class of superconformally flat and OSp(1|n)-related geometries. Because of the conformal symmetry of the supergravity constraints and of the higher spin field equations such geometries turn out to be trivial in the sense that they cannot generate a `minimal' coupling of higher spin fields to their potentials even in curved backgrounds with a non-zero cosmological constant. This suggests that the construction of interacting higher spin theories in this framework might require an extension of the tensorial superspace with additional coordinates such as twistor-like spinor variables which are used to construct the OSp(1|2n) invariant (`preonic') superparticle action in tensorial superspace.Comment: LaTeX, 30 pages, no figures. Superconformal operators in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory

We construct, in the framework of the N=4 SYM theory, a supermultiplet of twist-two conformal operators and study their renormalization properties. The components of the supermultiplet have the same anomalous dimension and enter as building blocks into multi-particle quasipartonic operators. The latter are determined by the condition that their twist equals the number of elementary constituent fields from which they are built. A unique feature of the N=4 SYM is that all quasipartonic operators with different SU(4) quantum numbers fall into a single supermultiplet. Among them there is a subsector of the operators of maximal helicity, which has been known to be integrable in the multi-color limit in QCD, independent of the presence of supersymmetry. In the N=4 SYM theory, this symmetry is extended to the whole supermultiplet of quasipartonic operators and the one-loop dilatation operator coincides with a Hamiltonian of integrable SL(2|4) Heisenberg spin chain.Comment: 45 pages, Latex, 4 figure
