Checking property preservation of refining transformations for model-driven development

    Get PDF
In Model-Driven Software Development, a software product is created through iteratively refined modelling. It is crucial that this process preserves certain desirable properties of the initial model. However, checking this is increasingly difficult as the models are increasingly more refined. We propose an incremental model checking technique to determine the preservation of safety and liveness properties in models of concurrent systems with respect to changes applied on individual processes, formalised as transformations of Labelled Transition Systems. The preservation check involves checking bisimilarity between transformed and new behaviour, and never involves reexploring unchanged behaviour. We prove its correctness and demonstrate its applicability

Investigating recording patterns using magnetic force microscopy

    Get PDF
The magnetic force microscope is a valuable tool for the qualitative analysis of local phenomena in magnetic recording media. To study the possibilities for a more quantitative analysis, the MFM results have been compared with recording results. It is shown that such analysis is hampered by the nonlinear transfer characteristic and by the masking of local high-definition details due to the application of an auxiliary electrostatic field in the current instrument

    A Musical instrument in MEMS

    Get PDF
In this work we describe a MEMS instrument that resonates at audible frequencies, and with which music can be made. The sounds are generated by mechanical resonators and capacitive displacement sensors. Damping by air scales unfavourably for generating audible frequencies with small devices. Therefore a vacuum of 1.5 mbar is used to increase the quality factor and consequently the duration of the sounds to around 0.25 s. The instrument will be demonstrated during the MME 2010 conference opening, in a musical composition especially made for the occasion

Thermally induced switching field distribution of individual single nanomagnets in a large assembly

    Get PDF
The Anomalous Hall Effect (AHE) can be used to measure the magnetization reversal of individual nanomagnets, under varying field angle and wide temperature range [1]. By passing a current through the magnetic elements, and measuring the voltage generated perpendicular to the current direction, one can determine the component of magnetisation perpendicular to the film plane. This extremely sensitive method can be used to observe reversal of magnetic elements with diameters below 10 nm or individual elements inside large assemblies

Towards verified Java code generation from concurrent state machines

    Get PDF
We present work in progress on, verified, transformation of a modeling language based on communicating concurrent state machines, SLCO, to Java. Some concurrency related challenges, related to atomicity and non-standard fairness issues, are pointed out. We discuss solutions based on Java synchronization concepts

Effect of enzyme therapy and prognostic factors in 69 adults with Pompe disease: An open-label single-center study

Abstract. Background: Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) in adults with Pompe disease, a progressive neuromuscular disorder, is of promising but variable efficacy. We investigated whether it alters the course of disease, and also identified potential prognostic factors. Methods. Patients in this open-label single-center study were treated biweekly with 20 mg/kg alglucosidase alfa. Muscle strength, muscle function, and pulmonary function were assessed every 3-6 months and analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA. Results: Sixty-nine patients (median age 52.1 years) were followed for a median of 23 months. Muscle strength increased after start of ERT (manual muscle testing 1.4 percentage points per year (pp/y); hand-held dynamometry 4.0 pp/y; both p < 0.001). Forced vital capacity (FVC) remained stable when measured in upright, but declined in supine position (-1.1 pp/y; p = 0.03). Muscle function did not improve in all patients (quick motor function test 0.7 pp/y; p = 0.14), but increased significantly in wheelchair-independent patients and those with mild and moderate muscle weakness.Relative to the pre-treatment period (49 patients with 14 months pre-ERT and 22 months ERT median follow-up), ERT affected muscle strength positively (man

Clinical features and predictors for disease natural progression in adults with Pompe disease: A nationwide prospective observational study

Background: Due partly to physicians' unawareness, many adults with Pompe disease are diagnosed with great delay. Besides, it is not well known which factors influence the rate of disease progression, and thus disease outcome. We delineated the specific clinical features of Pompe disease in adults, and mapped out the distribution and severity of muscle weakness, and the sequence of involvement of the individual muscle groups. Furthermore, we defined the natural disease course and identified prognostic factors for disease progression. Methods. We conducted a single-center, prospective, observational study. Muscle strength (manual muscle testing, and hand-held dynamometry), muscle function (quick motor function test), and pulmonary function (forced vital capacity in sitting and supine positions) were assessed every 3-6 months and analyzed using repeated-measures ANOVA. Results: Between October 2004 and August 2009, 94 patients aged between 25 and 75 years were includ

ANTARES: the first undersea neutrino telescope

    Get PDF
The ANTARES Neutrino Telescope was completed in May 2008 and is the first operational Neutrino Telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. The main purpose of the detector is to perform neutrino astronomy and the apparatus also offers facilities for marine and Earth sciences. This paper describes the design, the construction and the installation of the telescope in the deep sea, offshore from Toulon in France. An illustration of the detector performance is given
