The rethinking and enhancement of the natural and cultural heritage of the cultural landscapes: the case of Sečovlje and Janubio saltpans

    Get PDF
Cultural landscapes represent a complex category where the nature-culture dichotomy seem to not be able to unfold the main features and the profound relations that humans have with the environment. Drawing on ethnographic data collected in the saltpans of Se-ovlje (Slovene Istria) and Janubio (Lanzarote--Canary Islands) this article examines informant`s perceptions about the awareness of the importance and the enhancement of the holistic values of both saltpans, as well as the impacts and benefits of tourism. Comparing these perceptions about both cultural landscapes, I try to suggest that the complex fruitfully relations between humans and nature in these saltpans are at odds with the neoliberal logic of nature which exploit and commoditize its resources depriving them of their respective agency. A sustainability to contrast the harmful activities of the market ought to be understood not as a simply isolation and fencing of nature for the sake of conservation, but as a preservation that need to foster the continuity of the deep interactions between human culture and non-human nature which are the core of the cultural landscapes

Classical Bianchi type I cosmology in K-essence theory

    Get PDF
We use one of the simplest forms of the K-essence theory and we apply it to the classical anisotropic Bianchi type I cosmological model, with a barotropic perfect fluid modeling the usual matter content and with cosmological constant. The classical solutions for any but the stiff fluid and without cosmological constant are found in closed form, using a time transformation. We also present the solution whith cosmological constant and some particular values of the barotropic parameter. We present the possible isotropization of the cosmological model, using the ratio between the anisotropic parameters and the volume of the universe and show that this tend to a constant or to zero for different cases. We include also a qualitative analysis of the analog of the Friedmann equation.Comment: 15 pages with one figure, accepted in Advances in High Energy Physic

SOLUBILIZATION OF P-ALKYLPHENOLS IN PLURONICS F-68 AND F-127 MICELLES: PARTITION COEFFICIENTS AND EFFECT OF SOLUTE ON THE AGGREGATE STRUCTURE

Indexación: Web of Science; Scielo. The partition of a series of substituted phenols between water and polymer micelles formed by Pluronic F-68 and F-127 has been studied. The formation of micelles by these block copolymers has been evidenced by steady-state fluorescence and dynamic light scattering. The data show that micelles and larger aggregates are formed above the critical micelle concentration. In presence of p-alkylphenols a micelle rearrangement occurs that leads to the formation of just one and large aggregate. This effect depends both on polymer and phenols structures. The partition coefficients and the standard free energies of transfer from the aqueous to the micellar phases were determined. The incremental free energy for a methylene group are 2.88 kJ mol-1 and 1.65 kJ mol-1 for F-127 and F-68, respectively. This difference is explained in terms of the core sizes that are determined by the length of the PPO block.http://ref.scielo.org/xfqmx

The aim of this paper is to discuss one of the most important contamination episodes that happened in Quintero’s bay where, in September of 2014, 37 thousand liters of oil were spilled. This is understood as part of a bigger contamination chain. Quintero’s bay contains 17 companies that develop industrial, energy and port activities that are fundamental for the productive and economic Chilean model. The aim of this paper is to develop the form of governance in this area and the maintenance of a governability which allows the reproduction of this model, and conceals its contradictions and fissures that are produced because of its intense industrial activity. We can prove this by analyzing actions and speeches of those involved in this conflict, which are displayed in “El Mercurio de Valparaiso". This will allow a better understanding of the new neoliberal government, where the companies and the State generates the invisibility of contradictions and the acceptance of this accumulation model by the society.Fil: Espinoza Almonacid, Luis. The Gulf Coast region, principally Louisiana, leads the nation in oyster production. The National Marine Fisheries Service reported that 19.7 million pounds of oyster meat, valued at $62.3 million dollars were harvested from the Gulf Coast region in 2010. One of the main concerns for this industry is the health risk associated with the consumption of oysters, particularly for at-risk populations. Oysters are filter feeders. They tend to concentrate microbes present in surrounding waters, some of which can cause severe illness in susceptible humans. Among pathogens that contaminate the gastrointestinal system of oysters, Vibrio spp (especially V. parahaemolyticus and V. vulnificus) are of greatest concern. The overall goal of the proposed study was to develop a protocol for the production of high quality and safe frozen oyster products in steam venting packages that are microwavable. Based on this study, a combination of 100 g of frozen oyster meat with 200 g of frozen mixed vegetables provided retention of almost 95% of the meat’s moisture after 300 s of microwave cooking. In addition, the achieving of an internal temperature of 90°C after 258 s of microwave cooking assured inactivation of naturally occurring pathogenic bacteria in oyster meat. The study demonstrated that steam venting technology could be used to inactivate pathogenic bacteria in frozen oysters and oyster products cooked in the steam packages retained the texture and the desirable flavor composition traditionally associated with oysters

Biological treatment of industrial wastewater containing high concentrations of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS)

    Get PDF
Lauryl Alkylbenzene Sulfonate (LAS) is the major anionic surfactant used worldwide in detergent and household cleaning product formulations. Its biodegradation and removal has been extensively studied in wastewater treatment facilities and laboratory-scale tests at low concentrations (\u3c10 mg/L) typical of those encountered in municipal wastewater treatment plants. Less effort, however, has been expended investigating degradation of higher concentrations of LAS representative of those expected in wastewater generated at LAS manufacturing operations. The research described in this thesis was conducted to study biological processes for treating wastewaters containing high concentrations (e.g., 400 mg/L) of LAS. Initial experiments were carried out using a respirometry technique, and subsequently, three different laboratory-scale bioreactor systems. The three systems studied were a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR), a Sequencing Batch Biofilm Reactor (SBBR), and an Intermittent Cycle Extension Aeration System (ICEAS). The SBR and ICEAS were operated on a five-day cycle basis with a hydraulic retention time of four days. The SBBR was operated mainly in a two-day cycle having a hydraulic retention time of ten days as well, and polyurethane foam cubes were used as a support medium for attached biomass growth. The three systems were compared on their ability to remove LAS measured in terms of total organic carbon (TOC) and methylene blue active substances (MBAS). The reactors were also compared on the basis of foam production. The ICEAS showed the best performance in terms of controllable foam production while exhibiting a capacity for effectively dealing with transient periods of elevated loading. When a short Fill period was used, the SBR and SBBR had the disadvantage of producing excessive foaming, and an intermittent aeration strategy was required avoid overflow
