3,3âČ-Diethylthiatricarbocyanine Iodide: A Highly Sensitive Chiroptical Reporter of DNA Helicity and Sequence
Using UV-vis absorption and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopies, we explored the binding interactions of 3,3âČ-diethylthiatricarbocyanine iodide (Cy7) with polynucleotides of different sequences and helicity. CD showed to be a very diagnostic tool giving different spectroscopic chiroptical signatures for all explored DNA sequences upon Cy7 binding. Cy7 was able to spectroscopically discriminate between the right handed B-DNA of poly(dG-dC)2 and its left handed Z-DNA counterpart induced by spermine or Co(III)hexamine via nearly opposite induced circular dichroic signal

Synthesis, biophysical characterization and anti-HIV activity of d(TG3AG) Quadruplexes bearing hydrophobic tails at the 5'-end
Novel conjugated G-quadruplex-forming d(TG3AG) oligonucleotides, linked to hydrophobic groups
through phosphodiester bonds at 50-end, have been synthesized as potential anti-HIV aptamers, via a
fully automated, online phosphoramidite-based solid-phase strategy. Conjugated quadruplexes showed
pronounced anti-HIV activity with some preference for HIV-1, with inhibitory activity invariably in the
low micromolar range. The CD and DSC monitored thermal denaturation studies on the resulting quadruplexes,
indicated the insertion of lipophilic residue at the 50-end, conferring always improved stability
to the quadruplex complex (20 < DTm < 40 C). The data suggest no direct functional relationship
between the thermal stability and anti-HIV activity of the folded conjugated G-quartets. It would appear
that the nature of the residue at 50 end of the d(TG3AG) quadruplexes plays an important role in the thermodynamic
stabilization but a minor influence on the anti-HIV activity. Moreover, a detailed CD and DSC
analyses indicate a monophasic behaviour for sequences I and V, while for ODNs (IIâIV) clearly show that
these quadruplex structures deviate from simple two-state melting, supporting the hypothesis that intermediate
states along the dissociation pathway may exis

Dear participants,
welcome to the 18th edition of the Merck & Elsevier Young Chemists Symposium, formerly SAYCS and MYCS.
This conference is an international scientific event organized by the Young Group of the Italian Chemical Society (SCI Giovani) with the financial support of Merck and Elsevier.
This symposium is fully devoted to young researchers, such as MSc and PhD students, post-doc fellows and young researchers in companies. All the disciplines of Chemistry are covered: analytical, physical, industrial, organic, inorganic, theoretical, pharmaceutical, biological, environmental, macromolecular and electrochemistry. This year, a special emphasis will be given to chemistry from knowledge to innovation: how chemistry is increasingly present in all of the fields that are essential for human life, and how chemical fundamentals are pushing novel technologies?
This year we have the exceptional number of 212 participants; we thank you for the great trust shown towards SCI Giovani, Merck and Elsevier.

X-ray photoelectron spectra of Ag-Au colloidal nanoparticles after interaction with linear carbon chains
The results of X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) characterization of the surface of Ag-Au colloidal nanoparticles (Ag-Au NPs), prepared by laser ablation in water before and after interaction with linear carbon chains (LCC), are presented. No additional features appear in high-energy resolved XPS core level spectra of Ag-Au NPs which indicates that surface is not oxidized. The measurements of XPS Ag 3d-spectrum of (Ag-Au)@LCC manifests the additional low-energy structure that is associated with the formation of AgâC bonds. The charge transfer between Au atoms on the NPs surface and LCC was established. Additionally, some oxidation of the Ag atoms on the surface of (Ag-Au)@LCC is observed which arises during laser ablation in water. We assume that oxidative species will preferably interact with the areas outside the LCC instead of oxidizing the carbon chains which was confirmed by XPS C 1s spectra. © 2021 by the authors. Measurement of the Depth of Maximum of Extensive Air Showers above 10^18 eV
We describe the measurement of the depth of maximum, Xmax, of the
longitudinal development of air showers induced by cosmic rays. Almost four
thousand events above 10^18 eV observed by the fluorescence detector of the
Pierre Auger Observatory in coincidence with at least one surface detector
station are selected for the analysis. The average shower maximum was found to
evolve with energy at a rate of (106 +35/-21) g/cm^2/decade below 10^(18.24 +/-
0.05) eV and (24 +/- 3) g/cm^2/decade above this energy. The measured
shower-to-shower fluctuations decrease from about 55 to 26 g/cm^2. The
interpretation of these results in terms of the cosmic ray mass composition is
