IUPUI mechanical engineering technology senior assessment

This paper discusses the methods and analysis of 6-semesters of senior assessment examination data identifying the courses and subject material students found the most difficult to solve in the MET program Senior Assessment Examination. The analysis results indicate that MET 111 (Applied Statics), MET 213 (Dynamics), and MET 348 (Engineering Materials) are courses in need of potential improvement. Furthermore, subject areas such as the calculation of entropy change, the calculation of pressure drop flow through a pipe, and Hooke's Law are subject material that poses greatest problems for senior students. For the past 12 years, the Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) Program faculty at IUPUI require all seniors to take a MET Senior Assessment Examination that is similar in content to the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination. This paper discusses the methods used to provide insightful and actionable inputs for the IUPUI MET program process improvements plan. The raw data consists of test scores from 123 senior students who took the examination from 2014 through 2016. The Accreditation Board for Engineering & Technology (ABET) is an organization that ensures universities and institutions like IUPUI meet certain accreditation requirements and requires that each program develops a continuous improvement plan. The improvement plan typically consists of a compilation of student materials, employer surveys, and course evaluations used to ensure continuous improvement within a program. In 2004 IUPUI, MET program faculty decided that a standardized senior examination would be part of the program process improvement process, [1]

The use of chemoprophylaxis in East African Zebu village cattle exposed to trypanosomiasis in Muhaka, Kenya

    Get PDF
A study conducted to assess the efficacy of chemoprophylaxis for the improvement of the health and productivity of East African Zebu village cattle exposed to trypanosomiasis. Examines the cost-effectiveness of the treatment. Includes data on calf pre-weaning health and weight traits, weight traits of calves from 12-18 months of age, calf post-weaning health and weight traits, and breeding cow health and production traits - for the non-prophylactic and prophylactic groups

Measurement of single electron emission in two-phase xenon

    Get PDF
We present the first measurements of the electroluminescence response to the emission of single electrons in a two-phase noble gas detector. Single ionization electrons generated in liquid xenon are detected in a thin gas layer during the 31-day background run of the ZEPLIN-II experiment, a two-phase xenon detector for WIMP dark matter searches. Both the pressure dependence and magnitude of the single-electron response are in agreement with previous measurements of electroluminescence yield in xenon. We discuss different photoionization processes as possible cause for the sample of single electrons studied in this work. This observation may have implications for the design and operation of future large-scale two-phase systems.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

Limits on spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon cross-sections from the first ZEPLIN-II data

    Get PDF
The first underground data run of the ZEPLIN-II experiment has set a limit on the nuclear recoil rate in the two-phase xenon detector for direct dark matter searches. In this paper the results from this run are converted into the limits on spin-dependent WIMP-proton and WIMP-neutron cross-sections. The minimum of the curve for WIMP-neutron cross-section corresponds to 0.07 pb at a WIMP mass of around 65 GeV.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, to be published in Physics Letters

Observation of hard scattering in photoproduction events with a large rapidity gap at HERA

    Get PDF
Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5 GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the γp\gamma p centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4 GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets. This observation is consistent with the hard scattering of a quasi-real photon with a colourless object in the proton.Comment: 19 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded fil

Social roles and aging from a life-span perspective

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThis study investigated the social roles and developmental tasks of adults. The study took place in a settlement of low-income families, created in The Federal District in 1989. Data were collected through a questionnaire composed of 17 open and 15 closed questions, administered by the first author during a home visit. There were 98 respondents, 73 female and 25 male, being 51 between 50 to 59 years old and 47 elders above the age of 60. The result indicated that this group is heterogeneous and that its social roles are influenced by the demographic variables - age, sex, educational level, work, place of the birth and marital status, as well for the relative variables to current residence. The data allow the conclusion that social expectations, social support and the educational level are important resources for the optimization and necessary compensation to successful aging
