Unsupervised Classification Reveals Degenerate Neural Representations of Emotion
Neural degeneracy refers to the idea that distinct neural systems are capable of performing the same functions (Noppeney, Friston, & Price, 2004). Consistent with neural degeneracy, the Theory of Constructed Emotion (TCE) suggests that emotions and other mental states arise from combinations of the brain’s domain-general intrinsic networks such as the default mode network, salience network, and frontoparietal control network (Clark-Polner, Johnson, & Barrett, 2017). A key prediction of degeneracy and the TCE is that the same emotion can emerge from distinct patterns of connectivity across time or across individuals (Barrett, 2017). This project specifically investigates the principle of neural degeneracy in emotion for the first time using a data-driven model building algorithm with unsupervised classification (S-GIMME; Gates, Lane, Varangis, Giovanello, & Guskiewicz, 2017) to quantify distinct patterns of between-network connectivity during self-generated experiences of anxiety and anger. Twenty-four subjects underwent an fMRI experiment in which they listened to unpleasant music and self-generated experiences of anxiety and anger. The hypotheses of this experiment were tested in four consecutive analysis steps. The first analysis step revealed that the S-GIMME procedure could roughly reproduce the experimental conditions in the present experiment by subgrouping individuals based on patterns of connectivity that differentiated anger and anxiety. The second analysis step revealed that this variation could be further subdivided into degenerate neural pathways within each emotion category. The third analysis step showed that subgroups revealed during the anger and anxiety conditions are distinct from those found during a task-positive control condition in which participants listened to neutral music but did not generate an emotional experience. Finally, the fourth analysis step provided a more stringent test of the degeneracy hypothesis by showing that distinct patterns of connectivity revealed in the previous analyses are not the result of stable individual differences that would also be present at rest. Next Generation Simulation Tools: The Systems Biology Workbench and BioSPICE Integration
Researchers in quantitative systems biology make use of a large number of different software packages for modelling, analysis, visualization, and general data manipulation. In this paper, we describe the Systems Biology Workbench (SBW), a software framework that allows heterogeneous application components—written in diverse programming languages and running on different platforms—to communicate and use each others' capabilities via a fast binary encoded-message system. Our goal was to create a simple, high performance, opensource software infrastructure which is easy to implement and understand. SBW enables applications (potentially running on separate, distributed computers) to communicate via a simple network protocol. The interfaces to the system are encapsulated in client-side libraries that we provide for different programming languages. We describe in this paper the SBW architecture, a selection of current modules, including Jarnac, JDesigner, and SBWMeta-tool, and the close integration of SBW into BioSPICE, which enables both frameworks to share tools and compliment and strengthen each others capabilities
The well-aligned orbit of WASP-84b: evidence for disc migration
We report the sky-projected orbital obliquity (spin-orbit angle) of WASP-84b,
a 0.70- planet in a 8.52-day orbit around a G9V/K0V star, to be
. We obtain a true obliquity of from a measurement of the inclination of the stellar spin axis with
respect to the sky plane. Due to the young age and the weak tidal forcing of
the system, we suggest that the orbit of WASP-84b is unlikely to have both
realigned and circularised from the misaligned and/or eccentric orbit likely to
have arisen from high-eccentricity migration. Therefore we conclude that the
planet probably migrated via interaction with the protoplanetary disc. This
would make it the first short-orbit, giant planet to have been shown to have
migrated via this pathway. Further, we argue that the distribution of
obliquities for planets orbiting cool stars ( < 6250 K) suggests
that high-eccentricity migration is an important pathway for the formation of

Language access differentially alters functional connectivity during emotion perception across cultures
Introduction It is often assumed that the ability to recognize the emotions of others is reflexive and automatic, driven only by observable facial muscle configurations. However, research suggests that accumulated emotion concept knowledge shapes the way people perceive the emotional meaning of others’ facial muscle movements. Cultural upbringing can shape an individual’s concept knowledge, such as expectations about which facial muscle configurations convey anger, disgust, or sadness. Additionally, growing evidence suggests that access to emotion category words, such as “anger,” facilitates access to such emotion concept knowledge and in turn facilitates emotion perception. Methods To investigate the impact of cultural influence and emotion concept accessibility on emotion perception, participants from two cultural groups (Chinese and White Americans) completed a functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning session to assess functional connectivity between brain regions during emotion perception. Across four blocks, participants were primed with either English emotion category words (“anger,” “disgust”) or control text (XXXXXX) before viewing images of White American actors posing facial muscle configurations that are stereotypical of anger and disgust in the United States. Results We found that when primed with “disgust” versus control text prior to seeing disgusted facial expressions, Chinese participants showed a significant decrease in functional connectivity between a region associated with semantic retrieval (the inferior frontal gyrus) and regions associated with semantic processing, visual perception, and social cognition. Priming the word “anger” did not impact functional connectivity for Chinese participants relative to control text, and priming neither “disgust” nor “anger” impacted functional connectivity for White American participants. Discussion These findings provide preliminary evidence that emotion concept accessibility differentially impacts perception based on participants’ cultural background
WASP-50b: a hot Jupiter transiting a moderately active solar-type star
We report the discovery by the WASP transit survey of a giant planet in a
close orbit (0.0295+-0.0009 AU) around a moderately bright (V=11.6, K=10) G9
dwarf (0.89+-0.08 M_sun, 0.84+-0.03 R_sun) in the Southern constellation
Eridanus. Thanks to high-precision follow-up photometry and spectroscopy
obtained by the telescopes TRAPPIST and Euler, the mass and size of this
planet, WASP-50b, are well constrained to 1.47+-0.09 M_jup and 1.15+-0.05
R_jup, respectively. The transit ephemeris is 2455558.6120 (+-0.0002) + N x
1.955096 (+-0.000005) HJD_UTC. The size of the planet is consistent with basic
models of irradiated giant planets. The chromospheric activity (log R'_HK =
-4.67) and rotational period (P_rot = 16.3+-0.5 days) of the host star suggest
an age of 0.8+-0.4 Gy that is discrepant with a stellar-evolution estimate
based on the measured stellar parameters (rho_star = 1.48+-0.10 rho_sun, Teff =
5400+-100 K, [Fe/H]= -0.12+-0.08) which favours an age of 7+-3.5 Gy. This
discrepancy could be explained by the tidal and magnetic influence of the
planet on the star, in good agreement with the observations that stars hosting
hot Jupiters tend to show faster rotation and magnetic activity (Pont 2009;
Hartman 2010). We measure a stellar inclination of 84 (-31,+6) deg,
disfavouring a high stellar obliquity. Thanks to its large irradiation and the
relatively small size of its host star, WASP-50b is a good target for
occultation spectrophotometry, making it able to constrain the relationship
between hot Jupiters' atmospheric thermal profiles and the chromospheric

The discovery of WASP-151b, WASP-153b, WASP-156b: Insights on giant planet migration and the upper boundary of the Neptunian desert
To investigate the origin of the features discovered in the exoplanet population, the knowledge of exoplanets’ mass and radius with a good precision (≲10%) is essential. To achieve this purpose the discovery of transiting exoplanets around bright stars is of prime interest. In this paper, we report the discovery of three transiting exoplanets by the SuperWASP survey and the SOPHIE spectrograph with mass and radius determined with a precision better than 15%. WASP-151b and WASP-153b are two hot Saturns with masses, radii, densities and equilibrium temperatures of 0.31−0.03+0.04 MJ, 1.13−0.03+0.03 RJ, 0.22−0.02+0.03 ρJ and 1290−10+20 K, and 0.39−0.02+0.02 MJ, 1.55−0.08+0.10 RJ, 0.11−0.02+0.02 ρJ and 1700−40+40 K, respectively. Their host stars are early G type stars (with mag V ~ 13) and their orbital periods are 4.53 and 3.33 days, respectively. WASP-156b is a super-Neptune orbiting a K type star (mag V = 11.6). It has a mass of 0.128−0.009+0.010 MJ, a radius of 0.51−0.02+0.02 RJ, a density of 1.0−0.1+0.1 ρJ, an equilibrium temperature of 970−20+30 K and an orbital period of 3.83 days. The radius of WASP-151b appears to be only slightly inflated, while WASP-153b presents a significant radius anomaly compared to a recently published model. WASP-156b, being one of the few well characterized super-Neptunes, will help to constrain the still debated formation of Neptune size planets and the transition between gas and ice giants. The estimates of the age of these three stars confirms an already observed tendency for some stars to have gyrochronological ages significantly lower than their isochronal ages. We propose that high eccentricity migration could partially explain this behavior for stars hosting a short period planet. Finally, these three planets also lie close to (WASP-151b and WASP-153b) or below (WASP-156b) the upper boundary of the Neptunian desert. Their characteristics support that the ultra-violet irradiation plays an important role in this depletion of planets observed in the exoplanet population
WASP-42 b and WASP-49 b: two new transiting sub-Jupiters
We report the discovery of two new transiting planets from the WASP survey.
WASP-42 b is a 0.500 +/- 0.035 M_jup planet orbiting a K1 star at a separation
of 0.0548 +/- 0.0017 AU with a period of 4.9816872 +/- 7.3 x 10^-6 days. The
radius of WASP-42 b is 1.080 +/- 0.057 R_jup while its equilibrium temperature
is T_eq = 995 +/- 34 K. We detect some evidence for a small but non-zero
eccentricity of e=0.060 +/- 0.013. WASP-49 b is a 0.378 +/- 0.027 M_jup planet
around an old G6 star. It has a period of 2.7817387 +/- 5.6 x 10^-6 days and a
separation of 0.0379 +/- 0.0011 AU. This planet is slightly bloated, having a
radius of 1.115 +/- 0.047 R_jup and an equilibrium temperature of T_eq = 1369
+/- 39 K. Both planets have been followed up photometrically, and in total we
have obtained 5 full and one partial transit light curves of WASP-42 and 4 full
and one partial light curves of WASP-49 using the Euler-Swiss, TRAPPIST and
Faulkes South telescopes

Concerns have frequently been raised about the underachievement of boys, with claims that the lack of male ‘role models’ in schools has an adverse effect on boys’ academic motivation and engagement. Although previous research has examined ‘teaching’ as institutional talk, men’s linguistic behaviour in the classroom remains largely ignored, especially in regard to enacting discipline. The EBLM Project I-Physical and orbital parameters, including spin-orbit angles, of two low-mass eclipsing binaries on opposite sides of the Brown Dwarf limit
This paper introduces a series of papers aiming to study the dozens of low
mass eclipsing binaries (EBLM), with F, G, K primaries, that have been
discovered in the course of the WASP survey. Our objects are mostly single-line
binaries whose eclipses have been detected by WASP and were initially followed
up as potential planetary transit candidates. These have bright primaries,
which facilitates spectroscopic observations during transit and allows the
study of the spin-orbit distribution of F, G, K+M eclipsing binaries through
the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect. Here we report on the spin-orbit angle of
WASP-30b, a transiting brown dwarf, and improve its orbital parameters. We also
present the mass, radius, spin-orbit angle and orbital parameters of a new
eclipsing binary, J1219-39b (1SWAPJ121921.03-395125.6, TYC 7760-484-1), which,
with a mass of 95 +/- 2 Mjup, is close to the limit between brown dwarfs and
stars. We find that both objects orbit in planes that appear aligned with their
primaries' equatorial planes. Neither primaries are synchronous. J1219-39b has
a modestly eccentric orbit and is in agreement with the theoretical
