A 3D study of the photosphere of HD 99563 - I. Pulsation analysis
We have used high-speed spectroscopy of the rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star HD 99563 to study the pulsation amplitude and phase behaviour of elements in its stratified atmosphere over one 2.91-d rotation cycle. We identify spectral features related to patches in the surface distribution of chemical elements and study the pulsation amplitudes and phases as the patches move across the stellar disc. The variations are consistent with a distorted non-radial dipole pulsation mode. We measure a 1.6 km s−1 rotational variation in the mean radial velocities of Hα and argue that this is the first observation of Hα abundance spots caused by He settling through suppression of convection by the magnetic field on an oblique rotator, in support of a prime theory for the excitation mechanism of roAp star pulsation. We demonstrate that HD 99563 is the second roAp star to show aspect dependence of blue-to-red running wave line profile variations in Nd iii spots

Renal Medullary Cancer in a Patient with Sickle Cell Trait
Renal medullary cancer is a rare malignancy almost exclusively seen in young patients of African ethnicity. These patients often present with the cardinal symptoms of hematuria, flank pain, and an abdominal mass, and this malignancy has been associated with patients carrying sickle cell trait. It is estimated that 300 million people worldwide carry sickle cell trait, and the presence of hematuria in these patients should be treated as a harbinger of a possible malignancy. Notably, this tumor mostly develops on the right side of the body. Patients often present with it at an advanced stage and the prognosis is poor. Therefore, a high index of suspicion in a patient of African descent presenting with a right sided abdominal mass and hematuria may assist in an early diagnosis. Current chemotherapy options are very limited, and early detection may provide a chance for surgical resection. It may also provide a bigger time frame for the initiation of novel chemotherapy regimens in patients who fail current chemotherapy regimens
New measurements of magnetic fields of roAp stars with FORS1 at the VLT
Magnetic fields play a key role in the pulsations of rapidly oscillating Ap
(roAp) stars since they are a necessary ingredient of all pulsation excitation
mechanisms proposed so far. This implies that the proper understanding of the
seismological behaviour of the roAp stars requires knowledge of their magnetic
fields. However, the magnetic fields of the roAp stars are not well studied.
Here we present new results of measurements of the mean longitudinal field of
14 roAp stars obtained from low resolution spectropolarimetry with FORS1 at the

Multibeam bathymetry data of Discovery Gap in the eastern North Atlantic
We present a multibeam bathymetry dataset of Discovery Gap; a narrow gap in ridge of the Azores-Gibraltar Fracture Zone (eastern North Atlantic). The gap serves as gateway for the exchange of deep water between the Madeira and Iberian abyssal plains. A bathymetric survey was carried out during the 43rd cruise of the research vessel (R/V) Akademik Nikolaj Strakhov in October 2019. The data were collected with the acquisition system RESON SeaBat 7150 (12.5 kHz), using the integrated navigation system Applanix POS MV, and processed using QINSy software. The multibeam bathymetry data are presented in tabular format (ASCII-table (*.txt), spreadsheets (*.xlsx)), and as a digital elevation model (DEM) of the bottom relief. The DEM was created using ArcGIS software in ESRI-ASCII-grid (*.asc) and GeoTIFF raster (*.tif) formats with a spatial resolution of 100 m. We provide processed data that can be used directly for further studies. The dataset is available with the article
MOST observations of the roAp stars HD 9289, HD 99563, and HD 134214
We report on the analysis of high-precision space-based photometry of the
roAp (rapidly oscillating Ap) stars HD 9289, HD 99563, and HD134214. All three
stars were observed by the MOST satellite for more than 25 days, allowing
unprecedented views of their pulsation. We find previously unknown candidate
frequencies in all three stars. We establish the rotation period of HD 9289
(8.5 d) for the first time and show that the star is pulsating in two modes
that show different mode geometries. We present a detailed analysis of HD
99563's mode multiplet and find a new candidate frequency which appears
independent of the previously known mode. Finally, we report on 11 detected
pulsation frequencies in HD 134214, 9 of which were never before detected in
photometry, and 3 of which are completely new detections. Thanks to the
unprecedentedly small frequency uncertainties, the p-mode spectrum of HD 134214
can be seen to have a well-defined large frequency spacing similar to the
well-studied roAp star HD 24712 (HR 1217).Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in A&
Asteroseismology of the Beta Cephei star 12 (DD) Lacertae: photometric observations, pulsational frequency analysis and mode identification
We report a multisite photometric campaign for the Beta Cephei star 12
Lacertae. 750 hours of high-quality differential photoelectric Stromgren,
Johnson and Geneva time-series photometry were obtained with 9 telescopes
during 190 nights. Our frequency analysis results in the detection of 23
sinusoidal signals in the light curves. Eleven of those correspond to
independent pulsation modes, and the remainder are combination frequencies. We
find some slow aperiodic variability such as that seemingly present in several
Beta Cephei stars. We perform mode identification from our colour photometry,
derive the spherical degree l for the five strongest modes unambiguously and
provide constraints on l for the weaker modes. We find a mixture of modes of 0
<= l <= 4. In particular, we prove that the previously suspected rotationally
split triplet within the modes of 12 Lac consists of modes of different l;
their equal frequency splitting must thus be accidental.
One of the periodic signals we detected in the light curves is argued to be a
linearly stable mode excited to visible amplitude by nonlinear mode coupling
via a 2:1 resonance. We also find a low-frequency signal in the light
variations whose physical nature is unclear; it could be a parent or daughter
mode resonantly coupled. The remaining combination frequencies are consistent
with simple light-curve distortions.
The range of excited pulsation frequencies of 12 Lac may be sufficiently
large that it cannot be reproduced by standard models. We suspect that the star
has a larger metal abundance in the pulsational driving zone, a hypothesis also
capable of explaining the presence of Beta Cephei stars in the LMC.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, MNRAS, in pres
