Last decade will remain in memory of nowadays generation - just as on history’s pages - as a time of revolutions, the second Spring of Nations. From Northern Africa, threw Middle East and Eastern Europe to Australia and Northern America - a lot of these protests were organised in the name of national independence or protecting constitutional privileges and Human Rights. Some of them were dedicated strictly to save copyright’s status quo from amendments. They were victorious civil manifestations against powerful lobbies responsible for confidentially attempts at changing intellectual property law

A Look across the River at Frankfurt- Oder and Its Inhabitants: Stereotypes and Liking in the Polish-German Divided Town in View of Social Geography

In this article, we deal with the specifics of the Polish-German borderland based on the example of Słubice and Frankfurt-Oder. Both Germany’s position in Europe as well as Poland’s geopolitical orientation after 1989 have had an impact on the shape of social relations in the borderland under question. In this article, we apply selected categories from the scope of social geography together with an analysis of sociological empirical results. We conclude that experiencing the space as well as the valorization of German urban and natural elements – both typical of the humanistic coefficient – coexist with the competences of the residents of Słubice: that of communication (using the German language) and interaction (having German friends). In divided towns, opinions about neighbours are hard to modify under the influence of the events taking place far away from the immediate neighbourhood. This has to do with “borderland effect”, i.e. more frequent and more intensive contacts with the neighbours from across the river. Frankfurters are characterized by the residents of Słubice as “punctual”, “complying with regulations”, “outgoing” and “sociable”. Liking (generally speaking) of Germans coexists here with such categories of experiencing, important for social geographers, as space, a piece of land, natural landscape, urban landscape, bridge, border, river’s width, type of banks, distance between the developed land and the river itself, distance from the state border to particularly attractive sites (e.g. the Old Town, bars and restaurants), and the aesthetics of the surrounding

Research misconduct occurs when a researcher fabricates (i.e. makes up data or results), falsifies (i.e. manipulates research materials, equipment or processes), or plagiarizes information or ideas within a research report. The misconduct must be committed intentionally, and the allegation must be proven by sufficient evidence. The consequences of research misconduct are considerable and disastrous. It can irreparably erode trust among scientists and between researchers and funding agencies, which may make it more difficult for colleagues at the same institution to receive grants. Research misconduct can also cause the public to lose confidence in the research results. A very important element in the fight against research misconduct is the replication study. Researchers should replicate the studies conducted by other researchers, and journals should not have to defend themselves for publishing articles presenting such research, including instance when such studies do not support previously published results. Institutions in Poland should have a procedure in place to investigate and report findings of misconduct and to protect both whistleblowers and the accused until a determination is made.78679

Stripped of illusions? Exploring system justification processes in Capitalist and post-Communist societies

    Get PDF
Sociologists and political scientists have often observed that citizens of Central and Eastern Europe express high levels of disillusionment with their social, economic and political systems, in comparison with citizens of Western capitalist societies. In this review, we analyze system legitimation and delegitimation in post-Communist societies from a social psychological perspective. We draw on system justification theory, which seeks to understand how, when and why people do (and do not) defend, bolster and justify existing social systems. We review some of the major tenets and findings of the theory and compare research on system-justifying beliefs and ideologies in traditionally Capitalist and post-Communist countries to determine: (1) whether there are robust differences in the degree of system justification in post-Communist and Capitalist societies, and (2) the extent to which hypotheses derived from system justification theory receive support in the post-Communist context. To this end, we summarize research findings from over 20 countries and cite previously unpublished data from a public opinion survey conducted in Poland. Our analysis confirms that there are lower levels of system justification in post-Communist countries. At the same time, we find that system justification possesses similar social and psychological antecedents, manifestations and consequences in the two types of societies. We offer potential explanations for these somewhat complicated patterns of results and conclude by addressing implications for theory and research on system justification and system change (or transition)

Wild vascular plants gathered for consumption in the Polish countryside: a review

BACKGROUND: This paper is an ethnobotanical review of wild edible plants gathered for consumption from the end of the 18(th )century to the present day, within the present borders of Poland. METHODS: 42 ethnographic and botanical sources documenting the culinary use of wild plants were analyzed. RESULTS: The use of 112 species (3.7% of the flora) has been recorded. Only half of them have been used since the 1960s. Three species: Cirsium rivulare, Euphorbia peplus and Scirpus sylvaticus have never before been reported as edible by ethnobotanical literature. The list of wild edible plants which are still commonly gathered includes only two green vegetables (Rumex acetosa leaves for soups and Oxalis acetosella as children's snack), 15 folk species of fruits and seeds (Crataegus spp., Corylus avellana, Fagus sylvatica, Fragaria vesca, Malus domestica, Prunus spinosa, Pyrus spp., Rosa canina, Rubus idaeus, Rubus sect. Rubus, Sambucus nigra, Vaccinium myrtillus, V. oxycoccos, V. uliginosum, V. vitis-idaea) and four taxa used for seasoning or as preservatives (Armoracia rusticana root and leaves, Carum carvi seeds, Juniperus communis pseudo-fruits and Quercus spp. leaves). The use of other species is either forgotten or very rare. In the past, several species were used for food in times of scarcity, most commonly Chenopodium album, Urtica dioica, U. urens, Elymus repens, Oxalis acetosella and Cirsium spp., but now the use of wild plants is mainly restricted to raw consumption or making juices, jams, wines and other preserves. The history of the gradual disappearance of the original barszcz, Heracleum sphondylium soup, from Polish cuisine has been researched in detail and two, previously unpublished, instances of its use in the 20(th )century have been found in the Carpathians. An increase in the culinary use of some wild plants due to media publications can be observed. CONCLUSION: Poland can be characterized as a country where the traditions of culinary use of wild plants became impoverished very early, compared to some parts of southern Europe. The present use of wild plants, even among the oldest generation, has been almost entirely restricted to fruits

The Europeanness of young Poles: The representation of experience world’ in the memoirs of the youthThe article entitled „The Europeanness of Young Poles: the ‚representation of experience world’ in the Memoirs of the Youth” is based on the analysis of two memoirs of young people written for the sake of the memoirs’ contest „Poles in Europe — Europe among Poles. In Search for Own Roots” organised in 2005. Th e research made heuristic use of „phenomenological maps of consciousness” based on a modified technique of „concept maps”. The contest was basis for „scientific work funded from the resources for science in 2006/2007” as the research project „European identity in the biographies of Poles. A sociological outline” head of the project: Professor Zbigniew Kurcz. Considering the „’representation of experience world” in memoirs as a relatively consistent entity, the article presents a sample of views/experiences of the young people who could, in other type of research, declare a kind of Polish sense of being European. „The world of memoirs” presents a specific way of writing thinking? which makes it possible to explore the important role of the historical and national processes of socialization performed in numerous dimensions of life everyday, social, educational, political and especially in its media dimension.
