Characteristics and radiation tolerance of a double-sided microstrip detector with polysilicon biasing resistors
The characteristics and radiation tolerance of a double-sided microstrip detector (DSMD) were studied, and the suitability of the detector to the ALICE experiment requirements was analyzed. The sensitive area of the silicon microstrip detector measures 40x75 mm. The DSMD consists of 750 registering strips on each side. The strip pitch is 100 mm and the strip length is 40 mm. Strips of the p+-side were oriented parallel to the side edge, the n+-strips were placed at 30 mrad stereo angle with respect to p+-strips and were separated by a common p+-stop structure. Both p+- and n+-strips are biased by integrated polysilicon resistors with a resistance no less than 10 MOhm. The data readout is realized with use of 120 pF coupling capacitors. The radiation tolerance of the microstrip detector was studied using 20 MeV electrons. The leakage current increases from 2 up to 5 nA per one strip and the interstrip resistance decreases from 43 down to 30 GOhm after 10 krad irradiation dose. The other DSMD features remain unchanged under irradiation. To evaluate the detector efficiency, the yield of good coupling capacitors and biasing resistors, as well as strip leakage currents, interstrip resistance and interstrip capacitance were studied. Based on the data obtained, the number of defective strips is found not to exceed 3%; this provides the required detector efficiency of about 97%
Next-generation antigen receptor sequencing of paired diagnosis and relapse samples of B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia: Clonal evolution and implications for minimal residual disease target selection
Antigen receptor gene rearrangements are frequently applied as molecular targets for detection of minimal residual disease (MRD) in B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients. Since such targets may be lost at relapse, appropriate selection of antigen receptor genes as MRD-PCR target is critical. Recently, next-generation sequencing (NGS) – much more sensitive and quantitative than classical PCR-heteroduplex approaches – has been introduced for identification of MRD-PCR targets. We evaluated 42 paired diagnosis-relapse samples by NGS (IGH, IGK, TRG, TRD, and TRB) to evaluate clonal evolution patterns and to design an algorithm for selection of antigen receptor gene rearrangements most likely to remain stable at relapse. Overall, only 393 out of 1446 (27%) clonal rearrangements were stable between diagnosis and relapse. If only index clones with a frequency >5% at diagnosis were taken into account, this number increased to 65%; including only index clones with an absolute read count >10,000, indicating truly major clones, further increased the stability to 84%. Over 90% of index clones at relapse were also present as index clone at diagnosis. Our data provide detailed information about the stability of antigen receptor gene rearrangements, based on which we propose an algorithm for selecting stable MRD-PCR targets, successful in >97% of patients
Protocol for a randomized controlled multicenter trial assessing the efficacy of leuprorelin for severe polycystic liver disease : the AGAINST-PLD study
Altres ajuts: Dutch Government (ZonMW grant 10140261910001); Abbvie (SA-003047 (ACA-NETH-20-01)).Background: In patients with severe polycystic liver disease (PLD), there is a need for new treatments. Estrogens and possibly other female sex hormones stimulate growth in PLD. In some patients, liver volume decreases after menopause. Female sex hormones could therefore be a target for therapy. The AGAINST-PLD study will examine the efficacy of the GnRH agonist leuprorelin, which blocks the production of estrogen and other sex hormones, to reduce liver growth in PLD. Methods: The AGAINST-PLD study is an investigator-driven, multicenter, randomized controlled trial. Institutional review board (IRB) approval was received at the University Medical Center of Groningen and will be collected in other sites before opening these sites. Thirty-six female, pre-menopausal patients, with a very large liver volume for age (upper 10% of the PLD population) and ongoing liver growth despite current treatment options will be randomized to direct start of leuprorelin or to 18 months standard of care and delayed start of leuprorelin. Leuprorelin is given as 3.75 mg subcutaneously (s.c.) monthly for the first 3 months followed by 3-monthly depots of 11.25 mg s.c. The trial duration is 36 months. MRI scans to measure liver volume will be performed at screening, 6 months, 18 months, 24 months and 36 months. In addition, blood will be drawn, DEXA-scans will be performed and questionnaires will be collected. This design enables comparison between patients on study treatment and standard of care (first 18 months) and within patients before and during treatment (whole trial). Main outcome is annualized liver growth rate compared between standard of care and study treatment. Secondary outcomes are PLD disease severity, change in liver growth within individuals and (serious) adverse events. The study is designed as a prospective open-label study with blinded endpoint assessment (PROBE). Discussion: In this trial, we combined the expertise of hepatologist, nephrologists and gynecologists to study the effect of leuprorelin on liver growth in PLD. In this way, we hope to stop liver growth, reduce symptoms and reduce the need for liver transplantation in severe PLD. Magnetic Oscillations in Dense Cold Quark Matter with Four-Fermion Interactions
The phase structures of Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models with one or two flavours
have been investigated at non-zero values of and , where is an
external magnetic field and is the chemical potential. In the phase
portraits of both models there arise infinitely many massless chirally
symmetric phases, as well as massive ones with spontaneously broken chiral
invariance, reflecting the existence of infinitely many Landau levels. Phase
transitions of first and second orders and a lot of tricritical points have
been shown to exist in phase diagrams. In the massless case, such a phase
structure leads unavoidably to the standard van Alphen-de Haas magnetic
oscillations of some thermodynamical quantities, including magnetization,
pressure and particle density. In the massive case we have found an oscillating
behaviour not only for thermodynamical quantities, but also for a dynamical
quantity as the quark mass. Besides, in this case we have non-standard, i.e.
non-periodic, magnetic oscillations, since the frequency of oscillations is an
-dependent quantity.Comment: latex, 29 pages, 8 figure
Strange particle production in 158 and 40 GeV/ Pb-Pb and p-Be collisions
Results on strange particle production in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 and 40
GeV/ beam momentum from the NA57 experiment at CERN SPS are presented.
Particle yields and ratios are compared with those measured at RHIC.
Strangeness enhancements with respect to p-Be reactions at the same beam
momenta have been also measured: results about their dependence on centrality
and collision energy are reported and discussed.Comment: Contribution to the proceedings of the "Hot Quarks 2004" Conference,

Menus for Feeding Black Holes
Black holes are the ultimate prisons of the Universe, regions of spacetime
where the enormous gravity prohibits matter or even light to escape to
infinity. Yet, matter falling toward the black holes may shine spectacularly,
generating the strongest source of radiation. These sources provide us with
astrophysical laboratories of extreme physical conditions that cannot be
realized on Earth. This chapter offers a review of the basic menus for feeding
matter onto black holes and discusses their observational implications.Comment: 27 pages. Accepted for publication in Space Science Reviews. Also to

Search for Higgs bosons decaying to tautau pairs in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We present a search for the production of neutral Higgs bosons decaying into
tautau pairs in ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The
data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb-1, were collected by
the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We set upper limits at the
95% C.L. on the product of production cross section and branching ratio for a
scalar resonance decaying into tautau pairs, and we then interpret these limits
as limits on the production of Higgs bosons in the minimal supersymmetric
standard model (MSSM) and as constraints in the MSSM parameter space.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PL
Measurement of three-jet differential cross sections d sigma-3jet / d M-3jet in p anti-p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV
We present the first measurement of the inclusive three-jet differential
cross section as a function of the invariant mass of the three jets with the
largest transverse momenta in an event in p anti-p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96
TeV. The measurement is made in different rapidity regions and for different
jet transverse momentum requirements and is based on a data set corresponding
to an integrated luminosity of 0.7 fb^{-1} collected with the D0 detector at
the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The results are used to test the three-jet
matrix elements in perturbative QCD calculations at next-to-leading order in
the strong coupling constant. The data allow discrimination between
parametrizations of the parton distribution functions of the proton.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, submitted to Phys. Lett. B, corrected

Search for Neutral Higgs Bosons of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model in e+e- Interactions at \sqrt{s} = 189 GeV
A search for the lightest neutral scalar and neutral pseudoscalar Higgs
bosons in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model is performed using 176.4
pb^-1 of integrated luminosity collected by L3 at a center-of-mass energy of
189 GeV. No signal is observed, and the data are consistent with the expected
Standard Model background. Lower limits on the masses of the lightest neutral
scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs bosons are given as a function of tan(beta).
Lower mass limits for tan(beta)>1 are set at the 95% confidence level to be m_h
> 77.1 GeV and m_A > 77.1 GeV
Measurement of the Topological Branching Fractions of the tau lepton at LEP
Using data collected with the L3 detector at LEP from 1992 to 1995 on the Z
peak, we determine the branching fractions of the tau lepton into one, three
and five charged particles to be:
B(tau->(1-prong)) = 85.274 +- 0.105 +- 0.073 %,
B(tau->(3-prong)) = 14.556 +- 0.105 +- 0.076 %,
B(tau->(5-prong)) = 0.170 +- 0.022 +- 0.026 %.
The first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The
accuracy of these measurements alone is similar to that of the current world
average
