    Walking into the Footprint of EU Law: Unpacking the Gendered Consequences of Brexit

    This article explores the gendered nature of the process of withdrawing from the European Union. Considering the EU is widely accepted as a gender actor, particularly in the context of employment policy, the marginality of these issues in current debates reflects a hierarchy in the value attributed to different policy areas that crystallizes the high-low politics binary. European led initiatives have undoubtedly changed the nature of equality policies in the Member States. Recent studies have also outlined how, and to what extent, EU policy contributes to shifts in gender regimes, gender policy and gender relations at the national level. Women in the UK have benefited greatly from membership of the EU/EEC, thus looking at Brexit as a process provides a unique opportunity to reflect on the relationship, and patterns of influence, between European and national legislation

    Ficaria verna Huds. extracts and their β-cyclodextrin supramolecular systems

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Obtaining new pharmaceutical materials with enhanced properties by using natural compounds and environment-friendly methods is a continuous goal for scientists. <it>Ficaria verna </it>Huds. is a widespread perennial plant with applications in the treat of haemorrhoids and to cure piles; it has also anti-inflammatory, astringent, and antibiotic properties. The goal of the present study is the obtaining and characterization of new <it>F. verna </it>extract/β-cyclodextrin complexes by using only natural compounds, solvents, and environment-friendly methods in order to increase the quality and acceptability versus toxicity indicator. Thus, the flavonoid content (as quercetin) of <it>Ficaria verna </it>Huds. flowers and leaves from the West side of Romania was determined and correlated with their antioxidant activity. Further, the possibility of obtaining β-cyclodextrin supramolecular systems was studied.</p> <p>Results</p> <p><it>F. verna </it>flowers and leaves extracts were obtained by semi-continuous solid-liquid extraction. The raw concentrated extract was spectrophotometrically analyzed in order to quantify the flavonoids from plant parts and to evaluate the antioxidant activity of these extracts. The <it>F. verna </it>extracts were used for obtaining β-cyclodextrin complexes; these were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and Karl Fischer water titration; spectrophotometry was used in order to quantifying the flavonoids and evaluates the antioxidant activity. A higher concentration of flavonoids of 0.5% was determined in complexes obtained by crystallisation method, while only a half of this value was calculated for kneading method. The antioxidant activity of these complexes was correlated with the flavonoid content and this parameter reveals possible controlled release properties.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The flavonoid content of <it>F. verna </it>Huds. from the West side of Romania (Banat county) is approximately the same in flowers and leaves, being situated at a medium value among other studies. β-Cyclodextrin complexes of <it>F. verna </it>extracts are obtained with lower yields by crystallisation than kneading methods, but the flavonoids (as quercetin) are better encapsulated in the first case most probably due to the possibility to attain the <it>host</it>-<it>guest </it>equilibrium in the slower crystallisation process. <it>F. verna </it>extracts and their β-cyclodextrin complexes have antioxidant activity even at very low concentrations and could be used in proper and valuable pharmaceutical formulations with enhanced bioactivity.</p

    Supernovae-induced accretion and star formation in the inner kiloparsec of a gaseous disk

    We consider the effects of supernovae (SNe) on accretion and star formation in a massive gaseous disk in a large primeval galaxy. The gaseous disk we envisage, roughly 1 kiloparsec (kpc) in size with >~ 10^8 M_Sun of gas, could have formed as a result of galaxy mergers where tidal interactions removed angular momentum from gas at larger radius and thereby concentrated it within the central ~ 1 kpc region. We find that SNe lead to accretion in the disk at a rate of roughly 0.1 - 1 M_Sun per year and induce star formation at a rate of ~ 10 - 100 M_Sun per year which contributes to the formation of a bulge; a part of the stellar velocity dispersion is due to the speed of SNa shells from which stars are formed and a part due to the repeated action of the stochastic gravitational field of the network of SNa remnants on stars. The rate of SNe in the inner kpc is shown to be self- regulating, and it cycles through phases of low and high activity. The supernova-assisted accretion transports gas from about one kpc to within a few pc of the center. If this accretion were to continue down to the central black hole (BH) then the resulting ratio of BH mass to the stellar mass in the bulge would be of order ~ 10^-2 - 10^-3, in line with the observed Magorrian relation.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figure; MNRAS in pres

    Impact of Serotonin 2C Receptor Null Mutation on Physiology and Behavior Associated with Nigrostriatal Dopamine Pathway Function

    The impact of serotonergic neurotransmission on brain dopaminergic pathways has substantial relevance to many neuropsychiatric disorders. A particularly prominent role has been ascribed to the inhibitory effects of serotonin 2C receptor (5-HT2CR) activation on physiology and behavior mediated by the mesolimbic dopaminergic pathway, particularly in the terminal region of the nucleus accumbens. The influence of this receptor subtype on functions mediated by the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway is less clear. Here we report that a null mutation eliminating expression of 5-HT2CRs produces marked alterations in the activity and functional output of this pathway. 5-HT2CR mutant mice displayed increased activity of substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) dopaminergic neurons, elevated baseline extracellular dopamine concentrations in the dorsal striatum (DSt), alterations in grooming behavior, and enhanced sensitivity to the stereotypic behavioral effects of D-amphetamine and GBR 12909. These psychostimulant responses occurred in the absence of phenotypic differences in drug-induced extracellular dopamine concentration, suggesting a phenotypic alteration in behavioral responses to released dopamine. This was further suggested by enhanced behavioral responses of mutant mice to the D1 receptor agonist SKF 81297. Differences in DSt D1 or D2 receptor expression were not found, nor were differences in medium spiny neuron firing patterns or intrinsic membrane properties following dopamine stimulation.
