Discrete phase-space approach to mutually orthogonal Latin squares
We show there is a natural connection between Latin squares and commutative
sets of monomials defining geometric structures in finite phase-space of prime
power dimensions. A complete set of such monomials defines a mutually unbiased
basis (MUB) and may be associated with a complete set of mutually orthogonal
Latin squares (MOLS). We translate some possible operations on the monomial
sets into isomorphisms of Latin squares, and find a general form of
permutations that map between Latin squares corresponding to unitarily
equivalent mutually unbiased sets. We extend this result to a conjecture: MOLS
associated to unitarily equivalent MUBs will always be isomorphic, and MOLS
associated to unitarily inequivalent MUBs will be non-isomorphic
Effective damping in the Raman cooling of trapped ions
We present a method of treating the interaction of a single three-level ion
with two laser beams. The idea is to apply a unitary transformation such that
the exact transformed Hamiltonian has one of the three levels decoupled for all
values of the detunings. When one takes into account damping, the evolution of
the system is governed by a master equation usually obtained via adiabatic
approximation under the assumption of far-detuned lasers. To go around the
drawbacks of this technique, we use the same unitary transformation to get an
effective master equation.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures. To appear in Optics Communication
The effect of Auger heating on intraband carrier relaxation in semiconductor quantumrods
The rate at which excited charge carriers relax to their equilibrium state
affects many aspects of the performance of nanoscale devices, including
switching speed, carrier mobility and luminescent efficiency. Better
understanding of the processes that govern carrier relaxation therefore has
important technological implications. A significant increase in carrier-carrier
interactions caused by strong spatial confinement of electronic excitations in
semiconductor nanostructures leads to a considerable enhancement of Auger
effects, which can further result in unusual, Auger-process-controlled
recombination and energy-relaxation regimes. Here, we report the first
experimental observation of efficient Auger heating in CdSe quantum rods at
high pump intensities, leading to a strong reduction of carrier cooling rates.
In this regime, the carrier temperature is determined by the balance between
energy outflow through phonon emission and energy inflow because of Auger
heating. This equilibrium results in peculiar carrier cooling dynamics that
closely correlate with recombination dynamics, an effect never before seen in
bulk or nanoscale semiconductors.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure
Heavy quark medium polarization at next-to-leading order
We compute the imaginary part of the heavy quark contribution to the photon
polarization tensor, i.e. the quarkonium spectral function in the vector
channel, at next-to-leading order in thermal QCD. Matching our result, which is
valid sufficiently far away from the two-quark threshold, with a previously
determined resummed expression, which is valid close to the threshold, we
obtain a phenomenological estimate for the spectral function valid for all
non-zero energies. In particular, the new expression allows to fix the overall
normalization of the previous resummed one. Our result may be helpful for
lattice reconstructions of the spectral function (near the continuum limit),
which necessitate its high energy behaviour as input, and can in principle also
be compared with the dilepton production rate measured in heavy ion collision
experiments. In an appendix analogous results are given for the scalar channel.Comment: 43 pages. v2: a figure and other clarifications added, published

Jet quenching parameter \hat q in the stochastic QCD vacuum with Landau damping
We argue that the radiative energy loss of a parton traversing the
quark-gluon plasma is determined by Landau damping of soft modes in the plasma.
Using this idea, we calculate the jet quenching parameter of a gluon. The
calculation is done in SU(3) quenched QCD within the stochastic vacuum model.
At the LHC-relevant temperatures, the result depends on the gluon condensate,
the vacuum correlation length, and the gluon Debye mass. Numerically, when the
temperature varies from T=T_c to T=900 MeV, the jet quenching parameter rises
from \hat q=0 to approximately 1.8 GeV^2/fm. We compare our results with the
predictions of perturbative QCD and other calculations.Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, discussions and references added; final version

Electromagnetic-field quantization and spontaneous decay in left-handed media
We present a quantization scheme for the electromagnetic field interacting
with atomic systems in the presence of dispersing and absorbing
magnetodielectric media, including left-handed material having negative real
part of the refractive index. The theory is applied to the spontaneous decay of
a two-level atom at the center of a spherical free-space cavity surrounded by
magnetodielectric matter of overlapping band-gap zones. Results for both big
and small cavities are presented, and the problem of local-field corrections
within the real-cavity model is addressed.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, RevTe
Continuous-wave biexciton lasing at room temperature using solution-processed quantum wells
Solution-processed inorganic and organic materials have been pursued for more than a decade as low-threshold, high-gain lasing media, motivated in large part by their tunable optoelectronic properties and ease of synthesis and processing. Although both have demonstrated stimulated emission and lasing, they have not yet approached the continuous-wave pumping regime. Two-dimensional CdSe colloidal nanosheets combine the advantage of solution synthesis with the optoelectronic properties of epitaxial two-dimensional quantum wells. Here, we show that these colloidal quantum wells possess large exciton and biexciton binding energies of 132 meV and 30 meV, respectively, giving rise to stimulated emission from biexcitons at room temperature. Under femtosecond pulsed excitation, close-packed thin films yield an ultralow stimulated emission threshold of 6 μJ cm(-2), sufficient to achieve continuous-wave pumped stimulated emission, and lasing when these layers are embedded in surface-emitting microcavities
Search for heavy neutrinos mixing with tau neutrinos
We report on a search for heavy neutrinos (\nus) produced in the decay
D_s\to \tau \nus at the SPS proton target followed by the decay \nudecay in
the NOMAD detector. Both decays are expected to occur if \nus is a component
of .\
From the analysis of the data collected during the 1996-1998 runs with
protons on target, a single candidate event consistent with
background expectations was found. This allows to derive an upper limit on the
mixing strength between the heavy neutrino and the tau neutrino in the \nus
mass range from 10 to 190 . Windows between the SN1987a and Big Bang
Nucleosynthesis lower limits and our result are still open for future
experimental searches. The results obtained are used to constrain an
interpretation of the time anomaly observed in the KARMEN1 detector.\Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures, a few comments adde
Production properties of K*(892) vector mesons and their spin alignment as measured in the NOMAD experiment
First measurements of K*(892) mesons production properties and their spin
alignment in nu_mu charged current (CC) and neutral current (NC) interactions
are presented. The analysis of the full data sample of the NOMAD experiment is
performed in different kinematic regions. For K*+ and K*- mesons produced in
nu_mu CC interactions and decaying into K0 pi+/- we have found the following
yields per event: (2.6 +/- 0.2 (stat.) +/- 0.2 (syst.))% and (1.6 +/- 0.1
(stat.) +/- 0.1 (syst.))% respectively, while for the K*+ and K*- mesons
produced in nu NC interactions the corresponding yields per event are: (2.5 +/-
0.3 (stat.) +/- 0.3 (syst.))% and (1.0 +/- 0.3 (stat.) +/- 0.2 (syst.))%. The
results obtained for the rho00 parameter, 0.40 +/- 0.06 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst)
and 0.28 +/- 0.07 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst) for K*+ and K*- produced in nu_mu CC
interactions, are compared to theoretical predictions tuned on LEP measurements
in e+e- annihilation at the Z0 pole. For K*+ mesons produced in nu NC
interactions the measured rho00 parameter is 0.66 +/- 0.10 (stat) +/- 0.05
(syst).Comment: 20 p
Final NOMAD results on nu_mu->nu_tau and nu_e->nu_tau oscillations including a new search for nu_tau appearance using hadronic tau decays
Results from the nu_tau appearance search in a neutrino beam using the full
NOMAD data sample are reported. A new analysis unifies all the hadronic tau
decays, significantly improving the overall sensitivity of the experiment to
oscillations. The "blind analysis" of all topologies yields no evidence for an
oscillation signal. In the two-family oscillation scenario, this sets a 90%
C.L. allowed region in the sin^2(2theta)-Delta m^2 plane which includes
sin^2(2theta)<3.3 x 10^{-4} at large Delta m^2 and Delta m^2 < 0.7 eV^2/c^4 at
sin^2(2theta)=1. The corresponding contour in the nu_e->nu_tau oscillation
hypothesis results in sin^2(2theta)<1.5 x 10^{-2} at large Delta m^2 and Delta
m^2 < 5.9 eV^2/c^4 at sin^2(2theta)=1. We also derive limits on effective
couplings of the tau lepton to nu_mu or nu_e.Comment: 46 pages, 16 figures, Latex, to appear on Nucl. Phys.
