The effectiveness of anaerobic digestion in removing estrogens and nonylphenol ethoxylates

Copyright @ 2011 Elsevier B.V.The fate and behaviour of two groups of endocrine disrupting chemicals, steroid estrogens and nonylphenol ethoxylates, have been evaluated during the anaerobic digestion of primary and mixed sewage sludge under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions. Digestion occurred over six retention times, in laboratory scale reactors, treating sludges collected from a sewage treatment works in the United Kingdom. It has been established that sludge concentrations of both groups of compounds demonstrated temporal variations and that concentrations in mixed sludge were influenced by the presence of waste activated sludge as a result of transformations during aerobic treatment. The biodegradation of total steroid estrogens was >50% during primary sludge digestion with lower removals observed for mixed sludge, which reflected bulk organic solids removal efficiencies. The removal of nonylphenol ethoxylates was greater in mixed sludge digestion (>58%) compared with primary sludge digestion and did not reflect bulk organic removal efficiencies. It is apparent that anaerobic digestion reduces the concentrations of these compounds, and would therefore be expected to confer a degree of protection against exposure and transfer of both groups of compounds to the receiving/re-use environment.Thames Water, Yorkshire Water, and EPSRC
Parts verification for multi-level-dependent demand manufacturing systems: a recognition and classification structure
This research has developed and implemented a part recognition and classification structure to execute parts verification in a multi-level dependent demand manufacturing system. The part recognition algorithm enables the parent and child relationship between parts to be recognised in a finite-capacitated manufacturing system. This algorithm was developed using SIMAN simulation language and implemented in a multi-level dependent demand manufacturing simulation model. The part classification structure enables the modelling of a multi-level dependent demand manufacturing between parts to be carried out effectively. The part classification structure was programmed using Visual Basic Application (VBA) and was integrated to the work-to-list generated from a simulated MRP model. This part classification structure was then implemented in the multi-level dependent demand manufacturing simulation model. Two stages of implementation, namely parameterisation and execution, of the part recognition and classification structure were carried out. A real case study was used and five detail steps of execution were processed. Simulation experiments and MRP were run to verify and validate the part recognition and classification structure. The results led to the conclusion that implementation of the recognition and classification structure has effectively verified the correct parts and sub-assemblies used for the correct product and order. No parts and sub-assemblies shortages were found, and the quantity required was produced. The scheduled release for some orders was delayed due to overload of the required resources. When the loading is normal, all scheduled release timing is adhered to. The recognition and classification structure has a robust design; hence it can be easily adapted to new systems parameter to study a different or more complex case
Fibre intake among the Belgian population by sex-age and sex-education groups and its association with BMI and waist circumference
The objectives of the present study were to assess total dietary fibre intake and the main contributors to fibre intake in the Belgian population by sex-age and sex-education groups and to investigate its relationship with BMI and waist circumference (WC). The participants of the Belgian food consumption survey (2004) were randomly selected. Information about food intake was collected using two repeated, non-consecutive 24 h recall interviews. A total of 3083 individuals (>= 15 years; 1546 men and 1537 women) completed both interviews. The main contributors to total fibre intake (17.8 g/d) were cereals and cereal products (34%; 5.9 g/d), potatoes and other tubers (18.6%; 3.3 g/d), fruits (14.7%; 2.8 g/d) and vegetables (14.4%; 2.6 g/d). Legume fibre intake was extremely low (0.672%; 0.139 g/d). In all sex-age and sex-education groups, total fibre intake was below the recommendations of the Belgian Superior Health Council. Men (21 g/d) consumed significantly more fibre than women (17.3 g/d) (P < 0.001). Lower educated men and higher educated women reported the highest fibre intake. A significant inverse association was found between total fibre intake and WC (beta = -0.118, P < 0.001). Fruit-derived fibre was positively associated with WC (beta = 0.731, P=0.001). In summary, total fibre intake was inversely associated with WC, whereas fruit-derived fibre intake was positively associated with WC in the Belgian population
Identification and control of occupational risks in a São Paulo metropolitan region quarry
A mineração de pedra britada é a terceira em movimentação financeira do paÃs, sendo que quase metade da economia desse bem se concentra na região metropolitana de São Paulo. Paralelamente, o setor registrou o maior número de acidentes entre as indústrias extrativas, evidenciando a relevância da preocupação com a saúde e a segurança dos trabalhadores e a importância do controle dos riscos ocupacionais. A partir de 2002, a Norma Regulamentadora 22 (NR-22: Segurança e Saúde Ocupacional na Mineração) tornou obrigatória a elaboração do Programa de Gerenciamento de Risco (PGR), elaborado a partir da identificação e controle dos riscos. Tendo em vista a importância do setor para o Estado, buscou-se, com esse trabalho, avaliar e discutir os riscos presentes nas operações unitárias do processo produtivo de pedra britada em uma mina a céu aberto e propor medidas de controle para elaboração do PGR. Apesar de esse trabalho referir-se a um caso especÃfico, este pode ser estendido a outras minerações do setor, desde que sejam realizadas as considerações relativas à s diferenças nos processos produtivos. O desenvolvimento da pesquisa envolveu a identificação dos principais riscos associados à s operações de perfuração, desmonte, carregamento e transporte, britagem e peneiramento por meio de medições de campo de alguns agentes e relatórios e registros da empresa. Os resultados obtidos foram decisivos para a determinação das medidas de controle adequadas para a melhoria das condições de saúde e segurança dos trabalhadores.Crushed stone mining is the third largest mining economy in Brazil, where almost half is produced in the Sao Paulo metropolitan region. The segment registers the highest number of accidents among the extractive industries, which justifies the concern with workers’ health and safety and the importance of controlling occupational hazards. Since 2002, the NR-22 Standard (NR-22: Occupational Health and Safety in Mining) makes compulsory the elaboration of a Risk Management Program that identifies risks and establishes control measures. Considering the crushed stone mining industry’s importance to the state, this paper evaluates and discusses the risks identified in unit operations during the production process of crushed stone in an open pit mine in order to propose control measures for the development of the Risk Management Program. Although this study refers to a specific quarry, it can be applied to other mines from the same sector, since some considerations are made regarding differences in manufacturing processes. The research was based on the identification of the main risks associated with drilling, blasting, load & haulage, crushing and screening through field measurements of some hazardous agents, together with company reports. The results contributed to the choice of the appropriate control measures for the improvement of workers’ health and safety conditions
Geometric Lagrangians for massive higher-spin fields
Lagrangians for massive, unconstrained, higher-spin bosons and fermions are
proposed. The idea is to modify the geometric, gauge invariant Lagrangians
describing the corresponding massless theories by the addition of suitable
quadratic polynomials. These polynomials provide generalisations of the
Fierz-Pauli mass term containing all possible traces of the basic field. No

Noncommutativity Effects in FRW Scalar Field Cosmology
We study effects of noncommutativity on the phase space generated by a
non-minimal scalar field which is conformally coupled to the background
curvature in an isotropic and homogeneous FRW cosmology. These effects are
considered in two cases, when the potential of scalar field has zero and
nonzero constant values. The investigation is carried out by means of a
comparative detailed analysis of mathematical features of the evolution of
universe and the most probable universe wave functions in classically
commutative and noncommutative frames and quantum counterparts. The influence
of noncommutativity is explored by the two noncommutative parameters of space
and momentum sectors with a relative focus on the role of the noncommutative
parameter of momentum sector. The solutions are presented with some of their
numerical diagrams, in the commutative and noncommutative scenarios, and their
properties are compared. We find that impose of noncommutativity in the
momentum sector causes more ability in tuning time solutions of variables in
classical level, and has more probable states of universe in quantum level. We
also demonstrate that special solutions in classical and allowed wave functions
in quantum models impose bounds on the values of noncommutative parameters.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figure
Human decellularized dermal matrix seeded with adipose-derived stem cells enhances wound healing in a murine model : experimental study
Objective: Full-thickness cutaneous wounds treated with split-thickness skin grafts often result in unaesthetic and hypertrophic scars. Dermal substitutes are currently used together with skin grafts in a single treatment to reconstruct the dermal layer of the skin, resulting in improved quality of scars. Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) have been described to enhance wound healing through structural and humoral mechanisms. In this study, we investigate the compatibility of xenogen-free isolated human ASCs seeded on human acellular dermal matrix (Glyaderm (R)) in a murine immunodeficient wound model.
Methods: Adipose tissue was obtained from abdominal liposuction, and stromal cells were isolated mechanically and cultured xenogen-free in autologous plasma-supplemented medium. Glyaderm (R) discs were seeded with EGFP-transduced ASCs, and implanted on 8 mm full-thickness dorsal wounds in an immunodeficient murine model, in comparison to standard Glyaderm (R) discs. Re-epithelialization rate, granulation thickness and vascularity were assessed by histology on days 3, 7 and 12. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. EGFP-staining allowed for tracking of the ASCs in vivo. Hypoxic culture of the ASCs was performed to evaluate cytokine production.
Results: ASCs were characterized with flowcytometric analysis and differentiation assay. EGFP-tranduction resulted in 95% positive cells after sorting. Re-epithelialization in the ASC-seeded Glyaderm (R) side was significantly increased, resulting in complete wound healing in 12 days. Granulation thickness and vascularization were significantly increased during early wound healing. EGFP-ASCs could be retrieved by immunohistochemistry in the granulation tissue in early wound healing, and lining vascular structures in later stages.
Conclusion: Glyaderm (R) is an effective carrier to deliver ASCs in full-thickness wounds. ASC-seeded Glyaderm (R) significantly enhances wound healing compared to standard Glyaderm (R). The results of this study encourage clinical trials for treatment of full-thickness skin defects. Furthermore, xenogen-free isolation and autologous plasma-augmented culture expansion of ASCs, combined with the existing clinical experience with Glyaderm (R), aid in simplifying the necessary procedures in a GMP-laboratory setting
Effects of Cytokine Milieu Secreted by BCG-treated Dendritic Cells on Allergen-Specific Th Immune Response
Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is reported to suppress Th2 response and asthmatic reaction. Dendritic cells (DCs), the major antigen-presenting cells, infections with BCG are known to result in inducing various cytokines. Thus, DCs are likely to play a role in the effects of BCG on asthma. This study aims at investigating that cytokine milieu secreted by BCG-treated DCs directly enhances allergen-specific Th1 response and/or suppresses Th2 response in allergic asthma. DCs and CD3+ T cells were generated from Dermatophagoides farinae-sensitive asthmatics. DCs were cultured with and without BCG and subjected to flow cytometric analysis. IL-12 and IL-10 were determined from the culture supernatants. Some DCs were cocultured with T cells in the presence of D. farinae extracts after adding the culture supernatants from BCG-treated DCs, and IL-5 and IFN-γ were determined. BCG-treated DCs enhanced significantly the expressions of CD80, CD86, and CD40, and the productions of IL-12 and IL-10. Addition of culture supernatants from BCG-treated DCs up-regulated production of IFN-γ by T cells stimulated by DCs and D. farinae extracts (p<0.05), but did not down-regulate production of IL-5 (p>0.05).
