ABC and VED Analysis of the Pharmacy Store of a Tertiary Care Teaching, Research and Referral Healthcare Institute of India
The ABC and VED (vital, essential, desirable) analysis of the pharmacy store of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India, was conducted to identify the categories of items needing stringent management control. The annual consumption and expenditure incurred on each item of pharmacy for the year 2007-08 was analyzed and inventory control techniques, i.e. ABC, VED and ABC-VED matrix analysis, were applied. The drug formulary of the pharmacy consisted of 421 items. The total annual drug expenditure (ADE) on items issued in 2007-08 was Rs. 40,012,612. ABC analysis revealed 13.78%, 21.85% and 64.37% items as A, B and C category items, respectively, accounting for 69.97%, 19.95% and 10.08% of ADE of the pharmacy. VED analysis showed 12.11%, 59.38% and 28.51% items as V, E, and D category items, respectively, accounting for 17.14%, 72.38% and 10.48% of ADE of the pharmacy. On ABC-VED matrix analysis, 22.09%, 54.63% and 23.28% items were found to be category I, II and III items, respectively, accounting for 74.21%, 22.23% and 3.56% of ADE of the pharmacy. The ABC and VED techniques need to be adopted as a routine practice for optimal use of resources and elimination of out-of-stock situations in the hospital pharmacy
Magnetic, magnetocaloric and magnetotransport properties of RSn_{1+x}Ge_{1-x} compounds (R=Gd, Tb, Er; x=0.1)
We have studied the magnetic, magnetocaloric and magnetotransport properties
of RSn1+xGe1-x(R=Gd, Tb, Er; x=0.1) series by means of magnetization, heat
capacity and resistivity measurements. It has been found that all the compounds
crystallize in the orthorhombic crystal structure described by the
centrosymmetric space group Cmcm (No. 63). The magnetic susceptibility and heat
capacity data suggest that all the compounds are antiferromagnetic. Large
negative values of {\theta}p in case of GdSn1.1Ge0.9 and TbSn1.1Ge0.9 indicate
that strong antiferromagnetic interactions are involved, which is also
reflected in the magnetization isotherms. On the other hand ErSn1.1Ge0.9 shows
weak antiferromagnetic interaction. The heat capacity data have been analyzed
by fitting the temperature dependence and the values of {\theta}D and {\gamma}
have been estimated. Among these three compounds, ErSn1.1Ge0.9 shows
considerable magnetic entropy change of 9.5 J/kg K and an adiabatic temperature
change of 3.2 K for a field of 50 kOe. The resistivity data in different
temperature regimes have been analyzed and the dominant contributions have been
identified. All the compounds show small but positive magnetoresistance.Comment: 23 pages,11 figure
Solidification behavior of intensively sheared hypoeutectic Al-Si alloy liquid
The official published version of this article can be found at the link below. The effect of the processing temperature on the microstructural and mechanical properties of Al-Si (hypoeutectic) alloy solidified from intensively sheared liquid metal has been investigated systematically. Intensive shearing gives a significant refinement in grain size and intermetallic particle size. It also is observed that the morphology of intermetallics, defect bands, and microscopic defects in high-pressure die cast components are affected by intensive shearing the liquid metal. We attempt to discuss the possible mechanism for these effects.Funded by the EPSRC
The STAR Photon Multiplicity Detector
Details concerning the design, fabrication and performance of STAR Photon
Multiplicity Detector (PMD) are presented. The PMD will cover the forward
region, within the pseudorapidity range 2.3--3.5, behind the forward time
projection chamber. It will measure the spatial distribution of photons in
order to study collective flow, fluctuation and chiral symmetry restoration.Comment: 15 pages, including 11 figures; to appear in a special NIM volume

Basic kinetic wealth-exchange models: common features and open problems
We review the basic kinetic wealth-exchange models of Angle [J. Angle, Social
Forces 65 (1986) 293; J. Math. Sociol. 26 (2002) 217], Bennati [E. Bennati,
Rivista Internazionale di Scienze Economiche e Commerciali 35 (1988) 735],
Chakraborti and Chakrabarti [A. Chakraborti, B. K. Chakrabarti, Eur. Phys. J. B

Yakovenko, Eur. Phys. J. B 17 (2000) 723]. Analytical fitting forms for the
equilibrium wealth distributions are proposed. The influence of heterogeneity
is investigated, the appearance of the fat tail in the wealth distribution and
the relaxation to equilibrium are discussed. A unified reformulation of the
models considered is suggested.Comment: Updated version; 9 pages, 5 figures, 2 table

Synthesis of accelerograms compatible with the Chinese GB 50011-2001 design spectrum via harmonic wavelets: artificial and historic records
A versatile approach is employed to generate artificial accelerograms which satisfy the compatibility criteria prescribed by the Chinese aseismic code provisions GB 50011-2001. In particular, a frequency dependent peak factor derived by means of appropriate Monte Carlo analyses is introduced to relate the GB 50011-2001 design spectrum to a parametrically defined evolutionary power spectrum (EPS). Special attention is given to the definition of the frequency content of the EPS in order to accommodate the mathematical form of the aforementioned design spectrum. Further, a one-to-one relationship is established between the parameter controlling the time-varying intensity of the EPS and the effective strong ground motion duration. Subsequently, an efficient auto-regressive moving-average (ARMA) filtering technique is utilized to generate ensembles of non-stationary artificial accelerograms whose average response spectrum is in a close agreement with the considered design spectrum. Furthermore, a harmonic wavelet based iterative scheme is adopted to modify these artificial signals so that a close matching of the signals’ response spectra with the GB 50011-2001 design spectrum is achieved on an individual basis. This is also done for field recorded accelerograms pertaining to the May, 2008 Wenchuan seismic event. In the process, zero-phase high-pass filtering is performed to accomplish proper baseline correction of the acquired spectrum compatible artificial and field accelerograms. Numerical results are given in a tabulated format to expedite their use in practice
The effect of porosity of dust particles on polarization and color with special reference to comets
[EN] Cosmic dust particles are mostly responsible for polarization of the light that we observe from astrophysical objects. They also lead to color-extinction, thermal re-emission and other scattering related phenomena. Micrometric dust particles are often
made of smaller constituent (nanometric grains). They are characterized by their size (average radius), chemical composition and morphology (including porosity). In the present work, we address the question of the role of the dust particle porosity on light polarization and color, using Discrete Dipole Approximation (DDA) light scattering code. To this purpose, we develop an algorithm to generate dust particles of arbitrary values of porosity. In brief, starting from a compact spherical ensemble of dipoles, randomly the dipoles are removed one by one, such that the remaining dipoles remain connected within their neighbours. We stop the removal process when the desired porosity is obtained. Then we compute and study the optical properties of the porous dust particle.
The main objective of this paper is to develop a tool to generate dust particles with an arbitrary value of porosity and to study the effect of porosity on their light scattering properties. As a possible application, we simulate cometary polarization and color values which grossly match with the observed ones for the comet 1P/Halley, leaving scope for future work.R.B. thanks the Assam University, Silchar, for hospitality in the framework of 'Global Initiative for Academic Network' (GIAN) programme from MHRD, April 2016. The conventional methods often produce agglomerated structures exhibiting lower strength and ductility. To overcome the cohesive force of the agglomerates, a melt conditioned high-pressure die casting
(MC-HPDC) process innovatively adapts the well-established, high-shear dispersive mixing action of a twin screw mechanism. The distribution of particles and properties of composites are quantitatively evaluated.
The adopted rheo process significantly improved the distribution of the reinforcement in the matrix with a strong interfacial bond between the two. A good combination of improved ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and tensile elongation (e) is obtained compared with composites produced by conventional processes.EPSR
Phi meson production in Au+Au and p+p collisions at sqrt (s)=200 GeV
We report the STAR measurement of Phi meson production in Au+Au and p+p
collisions at sqrt (s)=200 GeV. Using the event mixing technique, the Phi
spectra and yields are obtained at mid-rapidity for five centrality bins in
Au+Au collisions and for non-singly-diffractive p+p collisions. It is found
that the Phi transverse momentum distributions from Au+Au collisions are better
fitted with a single-exponential while the p+p spectrum is better described by
a double-exponential distribution. The measured nuclear modification factors
indicate that Phi production in central Au+Au collisions is suppressed relative
to peripheral collisions when scaled by the number of binary collisions. The
systematics of versus centrality and the constant Phi/K- ratio versus beam
species, centrality, and collision energy rule out kaon coalescence as the
dominant mechanism for Phi production.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Azimuthal anisotropy at RHIC: the first and fourth harmonics
We report the first observations of the first harmonic (directed flow, v_1),
and the fourth harmonic (v_4), in the azimuthal distribution of particles with
respect to the reaction plane in Au+Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion
Collider (RHIC). Both measurements were done taking advantage of the large
elliptic flow (v_2) generated at RHIC. From the correlation of v_2 with v_1 it
is determined that v_2 is positive, or {\it in-plane}. The integrated v_4 is
about a factor of 10 smaller than v_2. For the sixth (v_6) and eighth (v_8)
harmonics upper limits on the magnitudes are reported.Comment: 6 pages with 3 figures, as accepted for Phys. Rev. Letters The data
