An isogeometric method for the Reissner-Mindlin plate bending problem
We present a new isogeometric method for the discretization of the
Reissner-Mindlin plate bending problem. The proposed scheme follows a recent
theoretical framework that makes possible to construct a space of smooth
discrete deflections and a space of smooth discrete rotations \Rots_h
such that the Kirchhoff contstraint is exactly satisfied at the limit.
Therefore we obtain a formulation which is natural from the
theoretical/mechanical viewpoint and locking free by construction
VLT Observations of Turnoff stars in the Globular Cluster NGC 6397
VLT-UVES high resolution spectra of seven turnoff stars in the metal-poor
globular cluster NGC 6397 have been obtained. Atmospheric parameters and
abundances of several elements (Li, Na, Mg, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, Zn and Ba)
were derived for program stars. The mean iron abundance is [Fe/H] = -2.02, with
no star-to-star variation. The mean abundances of the alpha-elements (Ca, Ti)
and of the iron-peak elements (Sc, Cr, Ni) are consistent with abundances
derived for field stars of similar metallicity. Magnesium is also almost solar,
consistent with the values found by Idiart & Th\'evenin (2000) when non-LTE
effects (NLTE hereafter) are taken into account. The sodium abundance derived
for five stars is essentially solar, but one object (A447) is clearly Na
deficient. These results are compatible with the expected abundance range
estimated from the stochastic evolutionary halo model by Argast et al. (2000)
when at the epoch of [Fe/H] -2 the interstellar medium is supposed to
become well-mixed.Comment: to appear in A&
Intraguild Predation and Native Lady Beetle Decline
Coccinellid communities across North America have experienced significant changes in recent decades, with declines in several native species reported. One potential mechanism for these declines is interference competition via intraguild predation; specifically, increased predation of native coccinellid eggs and larvae following the introduction of exotic coccinellids. Our previous studies have shown that agricultural fields in Michigan support a higher diversity and abundance of exotic coccinellids than similar fields in Iowa, and that the landscape surrounding agricultural fields across the north central U.S. influences the abundance and activity of coccinellid species. The goal of this study was to quantify the amount of egg predation experienced by a native coccinellid within Michigan and Iowa soybean fields and explore the influence of local and large-scale landscape structure. Using the native lady beetle Coleomegilla maculata as a model, we found that sentinel egg masses were subject to intense predation within both Michigan and Iowa soybean fields, with 60.7% of egg masses attacked and 43.0% of available eggs consumed within 48 h. In Michigan, the exotic coccinellids Coccinella septempunctata and Harmonia axyridis were the most abundant predators found in soybean fields whereas in Iowa, native species including C. maculata, Hippodamia parenthesis and the soft-winged flower beetle Collops nigriceps dominated the predator community. Predator abundance was greater in soybean fields within diverse landscapes, yet variation in predator numbers did not influence the intensity of egg predation observed. In contrast, the strongest predictor of native coccinellid egg predation was the composition of edge habitats bordering specific fields. Field sites surrounded by semi-natural habitats including forests, restored prairies, old fields, and pasturelands experienced greater egg predation than fields surrounded by other croplands. This study shows that intraguild predation by both native and exotic predators may contribute to native coccinellid decline, and that landscape structure interacts with local predator communities to shape the specific outcomes of predator-predator interactions
High order amplitude equation for steps on creep curve
We consider a model proposed by one of the authors for a type of plastic
instability found in creep experiments which reproduces a number of
experimentally observed features. The model consists of three coupled
non-linear differential equations describing the evolution of three types of
dislocations. The transition to the instability has been shown to be via Hopf
bifurcation leading to limit cycle solutions with respect to physically
relevant drive parameters. Here we use reductive perturbative method to extract
an amplitude equation of up to seventh order to obtain an approximate analytic
expression for the order parameter. The analysis also enables us to obtain the
bifurcation (phase) diagram of the instability. We find that while
supercritical bifurcation dominates the major part of the instability region,
subcritical bifurcation gradually takes over at one end of the region. These
results are compared with the known experimental results. Approximate analytic
expressions for the limit cycles for different types of bifurcations are shown
to agree with their corresponding numerical solutions of the equations
describing the model. The analysis also shows that high order nonlinearities
are important in the problem. This approach further allows us to map the

Somatic PIK3R1 Variation as a Cause of Vascular Malformations and Overgrowth
PurposeSomatic activating variants in the PI3K-AKT pathway cause vascular malformations with and without overgrowth. We previously reported an individual with capillary and lymphatic malformation harboring a pathogenic somatic variant in PIK3R1, which encodes three PI3K complex regulatory subunits. Here, we investigate PIK3R1 in a large cohort with vascular anomalies and identify an additional 16 individuals with somatic mosaic variants in PIK3R1.MethodsAffected tissue from individuals with vascular lesions and overgrowth recruited from a multisite collaborative network was studied. Next-generation sequencing targeting coding regions of cell-signaling and cancer-associated genes was performed followed by assessment of variant pathogenicity.ResultsThe phenotypic and variant spectrum associated with somatic variation in PIK3R1 is reported herein. Variants occurred in the inter-SH2 or N-terminal SH2 domains of all three PIK3R1 protein products. Phenotypic features overlapped those of the PIK3CA-related overgrowth spectrum (PROS). These overlapping features included mixed vascular malformations, sandal toe gap deformity with macrodactyly, lymphatic malformations, venous ectasias, and overgrowth of soft tissue or bone.ConclusionSomatic PIK3R1 variants sharing attributes with cancer-associated variants cause complex vascular malformations and overgrowth. The PIK3R1-associated phenotypic spectrum overlaps with PROS. These data extend understanding of the diverse phenotypic spectrum attributable to genetic variation in the PI3K-AKT pathway
Abundances in giant stars of the globular cluster NGC 6752
Recent theoretical yields and chemical evolution models demonstrate that
intermediate-mass AGB stars cannot reproduce the observed abundance
distributions of O, Na, Mg, and Al. As a further observational test of this
finding, we present elemental abundance ratios [X/Fe] for 20 elements in 38
bright giants of the globular cluster NGC 6752. Our mean abundance ratios
[X/Fe] are in good agreement with previous studies of this cluster and are also
consistent with other globular clusters and field stars at the same
metallicity. The mean abundance ratios [Ba/Eu] and [La/Eu] exhibit values, in
agreement with field stars at the same metallicity, that lie approximately
midway between the pure r-process and the solar (s-process + r-process) mix,
indicating that AGB stars have played a role in the chemical evolution of the
proto-cluster gas.
For the first time, we find possible evidence for an abundance variation for
elements heavier than Al in this cluster. We find a correlation between [Si/Fe]
and [Al/Fe] which is consistent with the abundance anomalies being synthesized
via proton captures at high temperatures. Leakage from the Mg-Al chain into
28Si may explain the Si excess in stars with the highest [Al/Fe]. We identify
correlations between [Y/Fe] and [Al/Fe], [Zr/Fe] and [Al/Fe], and [Ba/Fe] and
[Al/Fe] suggesting that Y, Zr, and Ba abundances may increase by about 0.1 dex
as Al increases by about 1.3 dex. While the correlations are statistically
significant, the amplitudes of the variations are small. If the small
variations in Y, Zr, and Ba are indeed real, then the synthesis of the Al
anomalies must have taken place within an unknown class of stars that also ran

Coude-feed stellar spectral library - atmospheric parameters
Context: Empirical libraries of stellar spectra play an important role in
different fields. For example, they are used as reference for the automatic
determination of atmospheric parameters, or for building synthetic stellar
populations to study galaxies. The CFLIB (Coude-feed library, Indo-US) database
is at present one of the most complete libraries, in terms of its coverage of
the atmospheric parameters space (Teff, log g and [Fe/H]) and wavelength
coverage 3460 - 9464 A at a resolution of 1 A FWHM. Although the atmospheric
parameters of most of the stars were determined from detailed analyses of
high-resolution spectra, for nearly 300 of the 1273 stars of the library at
least one of the three parameters is missing. For the others, the measurements,
compiled from the literature, are inhomogeneous.
Aims: In this paper, we re-determine the atmospheric parameters, directly
using the CFLIB spectra, and compare them to the previous studies.
Methods: We use the ULySS program to derive the atmospheric parameters, using
the ELODIE library as a reference.
Results: Based on comparisons with several previous studies we conclude that
our determinations are unbiased. For the 958 F,G, and K type stars the
precision on Teff, log g, and [Fe/H] is respectively 43 K, 0.13 dex and 0.05
dex. For the 53 M stars they are 82 K, 0.22 dex and 0.28 dex. And, for the 260
OBA type stars the relative precision on Teff is 5.1%, and on log g, and [Fe/H]
the precision is respectively 0.19 dex and 0.16 dex. These parameters will be
used to re-calibrate the CFLIB fluxes and to produce synthetic spectra of

A Systematic Review and Evidence Synthesis of Non-Medical Triage, Self-Referral and Direct Access Services for Patients with Musculoskeletal Pain.
Introduction
The demand for musculoskeletal (MSK) care is rising, and is a growing challenge for general practice. Direct access to physiotherapy and other healthcare services may offer appropriate care for MSK pain patients but there is uncertainty regarding the effectiveness or efficiency of this approach in practice. This study aimed to review the evidence regarding characteristics, outcomes, barriers and facilitators of MSK triage and direct access services.
Methods
A comprehensive search of eight databases (including MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane library) up to February 2018 was conducted to identify studies (trials, cohorts and qualitative evidence) on direct access services for MSK in primary care settings. Using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, titles, abstracts, and subsequent full texts were independently screened by reviewers. Methodological quality of eligible studies was assessed using the mixed methods appraisal tool, and extracted data regarding study characteristics and results were independently reviewed. A narrative synthesis and grading of evidence was undertaken. Approaches to MSK triage and direct access were profiled along with their respective outcomes of care relating to patient-oriented and socioeconomic outcomes. Barriers and facilitators of each model of direct access services were also highlighted.
Results
9010 unique citations were screened, of which 26 studies were eligible. Three approaches (open access, combination and service pathway models) to MSK triage and direct access shared similar goals but were heterogeneous in application. MSK patients using direct access showed largely similar characteristics (age, sex and duration of symptoms) compared to GP-led care, although they were often younger, slightly more educated and with better socio-economic status than patients seen through GP-led care. Although many studies showed limitations in design or methods, outcomes of care (patient oriented outcomes of pain, and disability) did not show large differences between direct access and GP-led care. In most studies direct access patients were reported to have lower healthcare utilisation (fewer physiotherapy or GP consultations, analgesics or muscle relaxants prescriptions, or imaging procedures) and less time off work compared to GP-led care.
Discussion
This study provides insight into the current state of evidence regarding MSK triage and direct access services and highlights potential implications for future research, healthcare services planning, resource utilisation and organising care for MSK patients in primary care. There is consistent, although limited, evidence to suggest that MSK triage and direct access services lead to comparable clinical outcomes with lower healthcare consumption, and can help to manage GP workload. However, due to the paucity of strong empirical data from methodologically robust studies, a scale up and widespread roll out of direct access services cannot as yet be assumed to result in long term health and socio-economic gains
Low-resolution spectroscopy of main sequence stars belonging to 12 Galactic globular clusters. I. CH and CN band strength variations
Globular clusters show abundance variations for light elements that are not
yet well understood. The preferred explanation involves a self-enrichment
scenario, with two subsequent generations of stars. Observations of main
sequence stars allow us to investigate the signature of this chemically
processed material without the complicating effects of internal mixing. Our
goal is to investigate the C-N anti-correlation with low-resolution
spectroscopy of 20-50 stars fainter than the first dredge-up in seven globular
clusters (NGC288, NGC1851, NGC5927, NGC6352, NGC6388, and Pal12) with different
properties. We complemented our observations with 47~Tuc archival data, with
four additional clusters from the literature (M15, M22, M55, NGC362), and with
additional literature data on NGC288. In this first paper, we measured the
strength of CN and CH band indices, and we investigated the anti-correlation
and bimodality of these indices. We compared r_CN, the ratio of stars belonging
to the CN-strong and weak groups, with 15 different cluster parameters. We
clearly see bimodal anti-correlation of the CH and CN band stregths in the
metal-rich clusters (Pal12, 47Tuc, NGC6352, NGC5927). Only M15 among the
metal-poor clusters shows a clearly bimodal anti-correlation. We found weak
correlations (sligthly above 1 sigma) of r_CN with the cluster orbital
parameters, present-day total mass, cluster concentration, and age. Our
findings support the self-enrichment scenario, and suggest that the occurrence
of more than two major generations of stars in a GGC should be rare. Small
additional generations (<10-20% of the total) would be difficult to detect with
our samples. The first generation, which corresponds to the CN-weak stars,
usually contains more stars than the second one (=0.82+/-0.29), as

Nonsingular isogeometric boundary element method for Stokes flows in 3D
Isogeometric analysis (IGA) is emerging as a technology bridging computer aided geometric design (CAGD), most commonly based on Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) surfaces, and engineering analysis. In finite element and boundary element isogeometric methods (FE-IGA and IGA-BEM), the NURBS basis functions that describe the geometry define also the approximation spaces. In the FE-IGA approach, the surfaces generated by the CAGD tools need to be extended to volumetric descriptions, a major open problem in 3D. This additional passage can be avoided in principle when the partial differential equations to be solved admit a formulation in terms of boundary integral equations, leading to boundary element isogeometric analysis (IGA-BEM). The main advantages of such an approach are given by the dimensionality reduction of the problem (from volumetric-based to surface-based), by the fact that the interface with CAGD tools is direct, and by the possibility to treat exterior problems, where the computational domain is infinite. By contrast, these methods produce system matrices which are full, and require the integration of singular kernels. In this paper we address the second point and propose a nonsingular formulation of IGA-BEM for 3D Stokes flows, whose convergence is carefully tested numerically. Standard Gaussian quadrature rules suffice to integrate the boundary integral equations, and carefully chosen known exact solutions of the interior Stokes problem are used to correct the resulting matrices, extending the work by Klaseboer et al. (2012) [27] to IGA-BEM
