    Children\u27s cognitive processing of abuse as described in investigative interviews.

    A great deal of research has examined ways in which investigative interviewers can elicit accurate information from children. More recently, research has studied children’s own thoughts or comprehension of abuse, and how these types of statements relate to disclosure, others’ perceptions of child witnesses, and psychological trauma. However, little research has investigated multiple types of children’s thoughts about abuse as they occur in an actual investigative interview. The current study examined seven types of statements children made about their abuse in a sample of 86 transcripts of investigative interviews conducted by Child Protective Services and a police department in a mid-sized Ontario city. Children interviewed ranged from 4- to 17-years-of-age, with approximately equal numbers of males and females. Type of abuse disclosed in the interviews ranged from verbal abuse to sexual abuse. Two coders independently coded each transcript for seven statement types: expected consequences of disclosure, actual consequences of disclosure, minimization, justification for either self, perpetrator, or other, and blame. Whether the statements were elicited by an interviewer prompt or mentioned spontaneously by the child was also coded. Results demonstrated that children blamed the perpetrator more than any other statement type, consistent with previous research. Analyses also revealed a significant relationship between abuse type and children’s statements, and alleged perpetrator and children’s statements. Results from the current study have implications for disclosure, treatment of psychological trauma, and how parents, social workers, police officers, attorneys, and judges view children’s statements

    Real-time gait assessment utilizing a new way of accelerometry

    Real-time registration of body segment angles is essential in artificial body position control. A new method is presented for the real-time calculation of the lower extremity angles using data obtained from pairs of two one-dimensional accelerometers. It is shown that, assuming rigid-body dynamics and simple hinge joints, relative angles (i.e. angles between segments) can be calculated without integration, thereby solving the problem of integration drift normally associated with accelerometry. During the stance phase of walking, the relative angles can be transformed to absolute angles (i.e. relative to the gravitational field direction) for the different leg segments. The feasibility of relative angle calculation is demonstrated by calculation of the knee angle of a healthy subject. Stability and resolution were demonstrated with measurements during standing. Measurements during standing up, sitting down and walking showed that shock (heel-strike) and skin movements, due to movements of the underlying muscle tissue, are the main error sources. Additional signal processing, e.g. low-pass filtering, can be used to diminish this error. The accuracy of the knee angle found is shown to be high enough to be used in a feedback controller for functional electrostimulation of the lower extremities

    Amide-modified poly(butylene terepthalate): thermal stability

    The thermal stability of a poly(ester amide) copolymer (PBTA) based on poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and nylon-4,T with the diamide of butanediamine and dimethyl terephthalate (N,Nâ€Č-bis(p-carbomethoxybenzoyl)butanediamine) and homopolymer PBT was studied. The development of inherent viscosity and endgroup concentration was determined during prolonged condensation reactions at 255–275°C. Analysis of the kinetics lead to degradation rate constants for PBT and PBTA with 20 mol% amide (PBTA20). The degradation rate of PBTA20 was comparable to that of PBT, thus ÎČ-elimination of the ester groups is the main degradation mechanism in PBTA. At high temperatures ester—amide interchange reactions also take place in PBTA. The change in the melting temperature of PBTA has been related to the decreasing uniformity of the amide segment length. The decomposition was further studied by thermogravimetry and mass spectrometry

    Initial Development of Surface Fuel Models for The Netherlands

    Estimating the spread of wildland fire is growing concern in the Netherlands, where fire events at the wildland urban interface is a growing concern with a changing climate. A multi-year project was initiated in 2012 to obtain field-based fuel measurements to be used to estimate wildland fire spread for surface fire. The overall objective was to develop either custom fuel models or utilize existing Northern American fuel models to fuel conditions in some of the hazardous vegetation in the Netherlands. Over a four-year period, 96 plots were established, a wide variety of fuel parameters measured, and ANOVA (p ≀ 0.1) and Duncan’s MRT used to place these into 56 different vegetation communities. Following multiple permutations in Behaveplus, the 56 communities were consolidated into 28 different fuel models. It was then attempted to use these fuel models as input variables in a Dutch-developed wildland fire spread model. Some fuel models produced similar fire spread, and since they were within relatively similar communities, were combined, resulting in 21 working fuel models. The results of this project will provide land managers, fire brigades and landowners more accurate wildland fire spread estimations, improving safety of the public in this densely populated country. The results of this project will contribute to more accurate and detailed calculations of the NBVM (Dutch wildfire spreadmodel). The NBVM will provide necessary information, to be able to reduce the risk on uncontrollable wildfires, via wildfire prevention measurements and during an incident, to support decision making

    A Contribution of the Trivial Connection to Jones Polynomial and Witten's Invariant of 3d Manifolds I

    We use the Chern-Simons quantum field theory in order to prove a recently conjectured limitation on the 1/K expansion of the Jones polynomial of a knot and its relation to the Alexander polynomial. This limitation allows us to derive a surgery formula for the loop corrections to the contribution of the trivial connection to Witten's invariant. The 2-loop part of this formula coincides with Walker's surgery formula for Casson-Walker invariant. This proves a conjecture that Casson-Walker invariant is a 2-loop correction to the trivial connection contribution to Witten's invariant of a rational homology sphere. A contribution of the trivial connection to Witten's invariant of a manifold with nontrivial rational homology is calculated for the case of Seifert manifolds.Comment: 28 page

    Dit artikel wil het theoretische vraagstuk beantwoorden of het concept van de herhaling toepasbaar is binnen de psychotische structuur. Binnen de neurose is de herhaling een mogelijke reactie van het subject op het tekort van de Ander. Het subject wordt geconfronteerd met een tekort, een toeval, een vraag waarop het geen antwoord kan vinden. Het subject is dan passief overgeleverd aan de Ander. Aan de hand van een gevalstudie zien we dat de psychoticus anders reageert op het tekort van de Ander. Enerzijds kunnen psychotici een antwoord vinden in het genot van de vader en dit genot gaat zich herhalen doorheen de levensloop. Deze ‘herhaling’ is echter terug te voeren tot het concept van het symptoom – hetgeen niet zo is bij neurotici. Anderzijds kunnen sommige psychotici geen antwoord vinden op het tekort van de Ander en zij ondervinden een terugkeer van het reĂ«le. Bij deze patiĂ«nten is ook een ‘herhaling’ merkbaar maar deze is terug te voeren tot het concept van le retour dans le rĂ©el. Daarom wordt besloten dat het concept van de herhaling inadequaat is voor de psychose

    Disease suppressive soilless culture systems; characterisation of its microflora

    The trend in glasshouse horticulture has always been to start culture systems as aseptic as possible. However, several root diseases still cause problems under these conditions. The present paper shows the importance of the microflora to suppress Pythium aphanidermatum, a fungal root pathogen which is a serious threat in cucumber. Introduced single antagonists as well as the indigenous microflora suppressed pythium root and crown rot. Pseudomonas fluorescens, Streptomyces griseoviridis, Pythium oligandrum, and 2 isolates of Trichoderma harzianum reduced the disease occurrence by 60 ␘r more in several, but not all, of the experiments. The indigenous microflora showed a very constant disease suppression of 50 to 100 &Eth;This was tested in experiments where P. aphanidermatum was added to sterilised and non-sterilised rockwool, and to sterilised rockwool that had been recolonised with the original microflora. Suppressiveness correlated with the number of filamentous actinomycetes present in the nutrient solution in the rockwool slabs. If a beneficial microflora is present in the cropping system, it should not be disturbed or eradicated by treatments such as disinfection of the recirculated nutrient solution. Therefore, the effects of different disinfection procedures on the composition of the microflora were compared. Numbers of filamentous actinomycetes in the nutrient solution in the tank after the disinfection treatment were highest without disinfection, intermediate after slow filtration, and lowest after UV treatment. Numbers of actinomycetes in the slabs, i.e. around the roots, were not distinctly different between the treatments. The implication of potential shifts in the microbial populations due to certain treatments for the disease development is not known. Increased knowledge on the beneficial microflora and the treatments that influence the composition of such a microflora, will stimulate the exploitation of microbially balanced and optimised soilless culture systems

    Nonlinear Response of HTSC Thin Film Microwave Resonators in an Applied DC Magnetic Field

    The non-linear microwave surface impedance of patterned YBCO thin films, was measured using a suspended line resonator in the presence of a perpendicular DC magnetic field of magnitude comparable to that of the microwave field. Signature of the virgin state was found to be absent even for relatively low microwave power levels. The microwave loss was initially found to decrease for small applied DC field before increasing again. Also, non-linearities inherent in the sample were found to be substantially suppressed at low powers at these applied fields.
