A collaborative study was established in 1995 between AgResearch in New Zealand (NZ) and Adelaide University in Australia to search for DNA markers significantly linked to production, carcass and meat quality traits in beef cattle. Gas hydrate on the northern Cascadia margin: regional geophysics and structural framework
Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 311 is based on extensive site survey data and historic research at the northern Cascadia margin since 1985. This research includes various regional geophysical surveys using a broad spectrum of seismic techniques, coring and logging by the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 146, heat flow measurements, shallow piston coring, and bottom video observations across a cold-vent field, as well as novel controlled-source electromagnetic and seafloor compliance surveying techniques. The wealth of data available allowed construction of structural cross-sections of the margin, development of models for the formation of gas hydrate in an accretionary prism, and estimation of gas hydrate and free gas concentrations. Expedition 311 established for the first time a transect of drill sites across the northern Cascadia margin to study the evolution of gas hydrate formation over the entire gas hydrate stability field of the accretionary complex. This paper reviews the tectonic framework at the northern Cascadia margin and summarizes the scientific studies that led to the drilling objectives of Expedition 311 Cascadia gas hydrate
Open TURNS: An industrial software for uncertainty quantification in simulation
The needs to assess robust performances for complex systems and to answer
tighter regulatory processes (security, safety, environmental control, and
health impacts, etc.) have led to the emergence of a new industrial simulation
challenge: to take uncertainties into account when dealing with complex
numerical simulation frameworks. Therefore, a generic methodology has emerged
from the joint effort of several industrial companies and academic
institutions. EDF R&D, Airbus Group and Phimeca Engineering started a
collaboration at the beginning of 2005, joined by IMACS in 2014, for the
development of an Open Source software platform dedicated to uncertainty
propagation by probabilistic methods, named OpenTURNS for Open source Treatment
of Uncertainty, Risk 'N Statistics. OpenTURNS addresses the specific industrial
challenges attached to uncertainties, which are transparency, genericity,
modularity and multi-accessibility. This paper focuses on OpenTURNS and
presents its main features: openTURNS is an open source software under the LGPL
license, that presents itself as a C++ library and a Python TUI, and which
works under Linux and Windows environment. All the methodological tools are
described in the different sections of this paper: uncertainty quantification,
uncertainty propagation, sensitivity analysis and metamodeling. A section also
explains the generic wrappers way to link openTURNS to any external code. The
paper illustrates as much as possible the methodological tools on an
educational example that simulates the height of a river and compares it to the
height of a dyke that protects industrial facilities. At last, it gives an
overview of the main developments planned for the next few years
Limits of the seismogenic zone in the epicentral region of the 26 December 2004 great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake: Results from seismic refraction and wide-angle reflection surveys and thermal modeling
The 26 December 2004 Sumatra earthquake (Mw = 9.1) initiated around 30 km
depth and ruptured 1300 km of the Indo-Australian Sunda plate boundary. During
the Sumatra OBS (ocean bottom seismometer) survey, a wide angle seismic profile
was acquired across the epicentral region. A seismic velocity model was
obtained from combined travel time tomography and forward modeling. Together
with reflection seismic data from the SeaCause II cruise, the deep structure of
the source region of the great earthquake is revealed. Four to five kilometers
of sediments overlie the oceanic crust at the trench, and the subducting slab
can be imaged down to a depth of 35 km. We find a crystalline backstop 120 km
from the trench axis, below the fore arc basin. A high velocity zone at the
lower landward limit of the raycovered domain, at 22 km depth, marks a shallow
continental Moho, 170 km from the trench. The deep structure obtained from the
seismic data was used to construct a thermal model of the fore arc in order to
predict the limits of the seismogenic zone along the plate boundary fault.
Assuming 100C-150C as its updip limit, the seismogenic zone is predicted to
begin 530 km from the trench. The downdip limit of the 2004 rupture as inferred
from aftershocks is within the 350C 450C temperature range, but this limit is
210-250 km from the trench axis and is much deeper than the fore arc Moho. The
deeper part of the rupture occurred along the contact between the mantle wedge
and the downgoing plate
Asperities and barriers on the seismogenic zone in North Chile: state-of-the-art after the 2007 Mw 7.7 Tocopilla earthquake inferred by GPS and InSAR data
The Mw 7.7 2007 November 14 earthquake had an epicentre located close to the city of Tocopilla, at the southern end of a known seismic gap in North Chile. Through modelling of Global Positioning System (GPS) and radar interferometry (InSAR) data, we show that this event ruptured the deeper part of the seismogenic interface (30–50 km) and did not reach the surface. The earthquake initiated at the hypocentre and was arrested ~150 km south, beneath the Mejillones Peninsula, an area already identified as an important structural barrier between two segments of the Peru–Chile subduction zone. Our preferred models for the Tocopilla main shock show slip concentrated in two main asperities, consistent with previous inversions of seismological data. Slip appears to have propagated towards relatively shallow depths at its southern extremity, under the Mejillones Peninsula. Our analysis of post-seismic deformation suggests that small but still significant post-seismic slip occurred within the first 10 d after the main shock, and that it was mostly concentrated at the southern end of the rupture. The post-seismic deformation occurring in this period represents ~12–19 per cent of the coseismic deformation, of which ~30–55 per cent has been released aseismically. Post-seismic slip appears to concentrate within regions that exhibit low coseismic slip, suggesting that the afterslip distribution during the first month of the post-seismic interval complements the coseismic slip. The 2007 Tocopilla earthquake released only ~2.5 per cent of the moment deficit accumulated on the interface during the past 130 yr and may be regarded as a possible precursor of a larger subduction earthquake rupturing partially or completely the 500-km-long North Chile seismic gap
Multiple shades of grey: Opening the black box of public sector executives' hybrid role identities
Public sector reforms of recent decades in Europe have promoted managerialism and aimed at introducing private sector thinking and practices. However, with regard to public sector executives' self-understanding, managerial role identities have not replaced bureaucratic ones; rather, components from both paradigms have combined. In this article, we introduce a bi-dimensional approach (attitudes and practices) that allows for different combinations and forms of hybridity. Empirically, we explore the role identities of public sector executives across Europe, building on survey data from over 7,000 top public officials in 19 countries (COCOPS survey). We identify country-level profiles, as well as patterns across countries, and find that administrative traditions can account for these profiles and patterns only to a limited extent. Rather, they have to be complemented by factors such as stability of the institutional environment (indicating lower shares of hybrid combinations) or extent of reform pressures (indicating higher shares of hybrid combinations)
