Flow injection biamperometric determination of chloramine-T in environmental, pharmaceutical and veterinary samples

[EN] A flow injection assembly for the determination of chloramine-T is proposed. The sample (213 mu l) is inserted into the carrier, de-ionized water flowing at 4.1 mi min(-1). This carrier merges with a mixture of potassium iodide and sulphuric acid, and the resulting solution flows to the flow cell through a reactor 66 cm long. The chloramine-T oxidises the iodide to tri-iodide. The resulting iodide/iodine ratio is biamperometrically tested. The calibration graph is linear up to 65 mu g ml(-1) chloramine-T; the limit of detection is 0.5 mu g ml(-1); the relative standard deviation (r.s.d) of the calibration slope is 2.8% for a series of eight independent calibrations. The r.s.d. of a series of 74 peaks for 40 mu g ml(-1) chloramine-T) is 0.8%, and the sample throughput 220 h(-1). Few foreign substances interfered. The method is applied to pharmaceutical, veterinary and waste water samples.Catalá-Icardo, M.; Giménez-Romero, D.; García Mateo, J.; Martínez Calatayud, J. (2000). The capture and analysis of light in flight, or light in transient state, has enabled applications such as range imaging, reflectance estimation and especially non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging. For this last case, hidden geometry can be reconstructed using time-resolved measurements of indirect diffuse light emitted by a laser. Transient rendering is a key tool for developing such new applications, significantly more challenging than its steady-state counterpart. In this work, we introduce a set of simple yet effective subpath sampling techniques targeting transient light transport simulation in occluded scenes. We analyze the usual capture setups of NLOS scenes, where both the camera and light sources are focused on particular points in the scene. Also, the hidden geometry can be difficult to sample using conventional techniques. We leverage that configuration to reduce the integration path space. We implement our techniques in a modified version of Mitsuba 2 adapted for transient light transport, allowing us to support parallelization, polarization, and differentiable rendering. © 2022 The Author(s

This work has been supported by the CAM Project S2009/DPI-1559/ROBOCITY2030 II, developed by the research team RoboticsLab at the University Carlos III of Madrid

    Facial transplantation: a concise update

    Get PDF
Objectives: Update on clinical results obtained by the first worldwide facial transplantation teams as well as review of the literature concerning the main surgical, immunological, ethical, and follow-up aspects described on facial transplanted patients. Study design: MEDLINE search of articles published on "face transplantation" until March 2012. Results: Eighteen clinical cases were studied. The mean patient age was 37.5 years, with a higher prevalence of men. Main surgical indication was gunshot injuries (6 patients). All patients had previously undergone multiple conventional surgical reconstructive procedures which had failed. Altogether 8 transplant teams belonging to 4 countries participated. Thirteen partial face transplantations and 5 full face transplantations have been performed. Allografts are varied according to face anatomical components and the amount of skin, muscle, bone, and other tissues included, though all were grafted successfully and remained viable without significant postoperative surgical complications. The patient with the longest follow-up was 5 years. Two patients died 2 and 27 months after transplantation. Conclusions: Clinical experience has demonstrated the feasibility of facial transplantation as a valuable reconstructive option, but it still remains considered as an experimental procedure with unresolved issues to settle down. Results show that from a clinical, technical, and immunological standpoint, facial transplantation has achieved functional, aesthetic, and social rehabilitation in severely facial disfigured patients

Targeting of prolamins by RNAi in bread wheat: Effectiveness of seven silencing-fragment combinations for obtaining lines devoid of coeliac disease epitopes from highly immunogenic gliadins

Gluten proteins are responsible for the viscoelastic properties of wheat flour but also for triggering pathologies in susceptible individuals, of which coeliac disease (CD) and noncoeliac gluten sensitivity may affect up to 8% of the population. The only effective treatment for affected persons is a strict gluten-free diet. Here, we report the effectiveness of seven plasmid combinations, encompassing RNAi fragments from a-, c-, x-gliadins, and LMW glutenin subunits, for silencing the expression of different prolamin fractions. Silencing patterns of transgenic lines were analysed by gel electrophoresis, RP-HPLC and mass spectrometry (LC-MS/ MS), whereas gluten immunogenicity was assayed by an anti-gliadin 33-mer monoclonal antibody (moAb). Plasmid combinations 1 and 2 downregulated only c- and a-gliadins, respectively. Four plasmid combinations were highly effective in the silencing of x-gliadins and c-gliadins, and three of these also silenced a-gliadins. HMW glutenins were upregulated in all but one plasmid combination, while LMW glutenins were downregulated in three plasmid combinations. Total protein and starch contents were unaffected regardless of the plasmid combination used. Six plasmid combinations provided strong reduction in the gluten content as measured by moAb and for two combinations, this reduction was higher than 90% in comparison with the wild type. CD epitope analysis in peptides identified in LC-MS/MS showed that lines from three plasmid combinations were totally devoid of CD epitopes from the highly immunogenic a- and x-gliadins. Our findings raise the prospect of breeding wheat species with low levels of harmful gluten, and of achieving the important goal of developing nontoxic wheat cultivars

The recent normalization of sexuality and sexual rights among people with Intellectual Disability (ID) has led to an increase in the number of initiatives aimed at improving their knowledge and skills through sexual-affective education programs, but these programs require evaluation instruments reliable to identify their needs and may be sensitive to change after the intervention. In this assessment their perceptions must converge, those of the professionals who deal with them and those of their parents to ensure the veracity of the information obtained, but unfortunately we lack valid and reliable psychometric instruments, both self-reported, because in many cases they lack of verbal skills sufficient to express their desires and experiences, as heteroinformed, since the existing ones are fundamentally focused on the study of attitudes towards sexuality of this group. The objective of this work has been to construct and validate a questionnaire to obtain information from parents about the sexuality of people with mild or moderate ID. The instrument consisting of 32 items with different response formats was administered to 118 parents of adults with ID. The Exploratory Factor Analysis and de Confirmatory Factor Analysis offers a structure composed by 3 factors: (F1) Comprehension of the privacy and social rules (13 items), (F2) perception of knowledge about sexuality that your child has (10 items) and (F3) concern for inappropriate sexual behavior (9 items). The model obtained with these four factors presents a good adjustment as shown by the main indicators (Chi2 S-B/df = 1.14, RMSEA = 0.035, CFI = 0.910 y TLI = 0.902).

The myths of romantic love are socially constructed upon irrational beliefs about the nature of love, which stipulates what “true love” is, which the desirable characteristics are in a future partner, the importance of love, future expectations and the type of relationship. The presence of these romantic beliefs favours or maintains gender violence within the couple and constitutes the essence of control-based relationships, which are mainly characterized by lower self-esteem. The purpose of this study is to consider the internalization of the myths of romantic love among a group of adolescents and to analyse their relationship in relation with their self-esteem. To achieve this objective, a sample of 321 participants (52% men and 48% women), amongst 11 and 18 years of age, completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Questionnaire and the Romantic Love Myths Scale, by Luzón, Ramos, Recio and De La Peña. The analysis showed significant differences in the internalization of romantic myths according to the gender in favour of man, specifically in the miths of jealousy (Chi2=25,50; p smaller than .001), omnipotence (Chi2=28,96; p smaller than .001), marriage (Chi2=7,60; p=.006), total submission (Chi2=13,80; p=.001) and in the groups of myths “Love is the most importat and requires total delivery” (Chi2=33,80; p smaller than .001), “Love as possession and exclusivity” (Chi2=26,59; p smaller than .001) and “Love can do anything” (Chi2=25,19; p smaller than .001). On the other hand, is observed in the total sample a significant and inverse relationship between self-esteem and the group of myths “Love can do everything” (rho=-.121*) and the myths of omnipotence (rho=-.121*) and exclusivity (rho=-.128*). In view of these results, two conclusions are reached. On the one hand, that men assume more romantic beliefs than woman. On the other hand, that people with lower self-steem have a stronguer internalization of romantic beliefs. Based on these findings, both differences between genders about the internalization of romantic myths and the role of self-esteem should be considered in future interventions.

Histological evidence for a supraspinous ligament in sauropod dinosaurs

Supraspinous ossified rods have been reported in the sacra of some derived sauropod dinosaurs. Although different hypotheses have been proposed to explain the origin ofthis structure, histological evidence has never been provided to support or reject any of them. In order to establish its origin, we analyse and characterize the microstructure of thesupraspinous rod of two sauropod dinosaurs from the Upper Cretaceous of Argentina. The supraspinous ossified rod is almost entirely formed by dense Haversian bone. Remains ofprimary bone consist entirely of an avascular tissue composed of two types of fibre-like structures, which are coarse and longitudinally (parallel to the main axis of the element) oriented. These structures are differentiated on the basis of their optical properties under polarized light. Very thin fibrous strands are also observed in some regions. These small fibres are all oriented parallel to one another but perpendicular to the element main axis. Histological features of the primary bone tissue indicate that the sacral supraspinous rod corresponds to an ossified supraspinous ligament. The formation of this structure appears to have been a non-pathological metaplastic ossification, possibly induced by the continuous tensile forces applied to the element.Fil: Cerda, Ignacio Alejandro.
