Genetic differentiation of Anopheles gambiae populations from East and West Africa : comparison of microsatellite and allozyme loci
Genetic variation of #Anopheles gambiae$ was analysed to assess interpopulation divergence over a 6000 km distance using short tandem repeat (microsatellite) loci and allozyme loci. Differentiation of populations from Kenya and Senegal measured by allele length variation at five microsatellite loci was compared with estimates calculated from published data on six allozyme loci (Miles, 1978). The average Wright's F(ST) of microsatellite loci (0.016) was lower than that of allozymes (0.036). Slatkin's R(ST) values for microsatellite loci were generally higher than their F(ST) values, but the average R(ST) value was virtually identical (0.036) to the average allozyme F(ST). These low estimates of differentiation correspond to an effective migration index (Nm) larger than 3, suggesting that gene flow across the continent is only weakly restricted. Polymorphism of microsatellite loci was significantly higher than that of allozymes, probably because the former experience considerably higher mutation rates. That microsatellite loci did not measure greater interpopulation divergence than allozyme loci suggested constraints on microsatellite evolution. Alternatively, extensive mosquito dispersal, aided by human transportation during the last century, better explains the low differentiation and the similarity of estimates derived from both types of genetic markers. Transverse spin effects in hadron-pair production from semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering
First measurements of azimuthal asymmetries in hadron-pair production in
deep-inelastic scattering of muons on transversely polarised ^6LiD (deuteron)
and NH_3 (proton) targets are presented. The data were taken in the years
2002-2004 and 2007 with the COMPASS spectrometer using a muon beam of 160 GeV/c
at the CERN SPS. The asymmetries provide access to the transversity
distribution functions, without involving the Collins effect as in single
hadron production. The sizeable asymmetries measured on the NH_ target indicate
non-vanishing u-quark transversity and two-hadron interference fragmentation
functions. The small asymmetries measured on the ^6LiD target can be
interpreted as indication for a cancellation of u- and d-quark transversities.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, updated to the published versio
A new measurement of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries on a transversely polarised deuteron target
New high precision measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of
charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on a
transversely polarised 6LiD target are presented. The data were taken in 2003
and 2004 with the COMPASS spectrometer using the muon beam of the CERN SPS at
160 GeV/c. Both the Collins and Sivers asymmetries turn out to be compatible
with zero, within the present statistical errors, which are more than a factor
of 2 smaller than those of the published COMPASS results from the 2002 data.
The final results from the 2002, 2003 and 2004 runs are compared with naive
expectations and with existing model calculations.Comment: 40 pages, 28 figure
Experimental investigation of transverse spin asymmetries in muon-p SIDIS processes: Collins asymmetries
The COMPASS Collaboration at CERN has measured the transverse spin azimuthal
asymmetry of charged hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic
scattering using a 160 GeV positive muon beam and a transversely polarised NH_3
target. The Collins asymmetry of the proton was extracted in the Bjorken x
range 0.003<x<0.7. These new measurements confirm with higher accuracy previous
measurements from the COMPASS and HERMES collaborations, which exhibit a
definite effect in the valence quark region. The asymmetries for negative and
positive hadrons are similar in magnitude and opposite in sign. They are
compatible with model calculations in which the u-quark transversity is
opposite in sign and somewhat larger than the d-quark transversity distribution
function. The asymmetry is extracted as a function of Bjorken , the relative
hadron energy and the hadron transverse momentum p_T^h. The high statistics
and quality of the data also allow for more detailed investigations of the
dependence on the kinematic variables. These studies confirm the leading-twist
nature of the Collins asymmetry.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Solutions of a particle with fractional -potential in a fractional dimensional space
A Fourier transformation in a fractional dimensional space of order \la
(0<\la\leq 1) is defined to solve the Schr\"odinger equation with Riesz
fractional derivatives of order \a. This new method is applied for a particle
in a fractional -potential well defined by V(x) =-
\gamma\delta^{\la}(x), where and \delta^{\la}(x) is the
fractional Dirac delta function. A complete solutions for the energy values and
the wave functions are obtained in terms of the Fox H-functions. It is
demonstrated that the eigen solutions are exist if 0< \la<\a. The results for
\la= 1 and \a=2 are in exact agreement with those presented in the standard
quantum mechanics
Double-Spin Asymmetry in the Cross Section for Exclusive rho^0 Production in Lepton-Proton Scattering
Evidence for a positive longitudinal double-spin asymmetry = 0.24
+-0.11 (stat) +-0.02 (syst) in the cross section for exclusive diffractive
rho^0(770) vector meson production in polarised lepton-proton scattering was
observed by the HERMES experiment. The longitudinally polarised 27.56 GeV HERA
positron beam was scattered off a longitudinally polarised pure hydrogen gas
target. The average invariant mass of the photon-proton system has a value of
= 4.9 GeV, while the average negative squared four-momentum of the virtual
photon is = 1.7 GeV^2. The ratio of the present result to the
corresponding spin asymmetry in inclusive deep-inelastic scattering is in
agreement with an early theoretical prediction based on the generalised vector
meson dominance model.Comment: 10 pages, 4 embedded figures, LaTe
Measurement of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries on transversely polarised protons
The Collins and Sivers asymmetries for charged hadrons produced in deeply
inelastic scattering on transversely polarised protons have been extracted from
the data collected in 2007 with the CERN SPS muon beam tuned at 160 GeV/c. At
large values of the Bjorken x variable non-zero Collins asymmetries are
observed both for positive and negative hadrons while the Sivers asymmetry for
positive hadrons is slightly positive over almost all the measured x range.
These results nicely support the present theoretical interpretation of these
asymmetries, in terms of leading-twist quark distribution and fragmentation
functions.Comment: 9 Pages, 5 figure
Exclusive rho^0 muoproduction on transversely polarised protons and deuterons
The transverse target spin azimuthal asymmetry A_UT in hard exclusive
production of rho^0 mesons was measured at COMPASS by scattering 160 GeV/c
muons off transversely polarised protons and deuterons. The measured asymmetry
is sensitive to the nucleon helicity-flip generalised parton distributions E^q,
which are related to the orbital angular momentum of quarks in the nucleon. The
Q^2, x_B and p_t^2 dependence of A_UT is presented in a wide kinematic range.
Results for deuterons are obtained for the first time. The measured asymmetry
is small in the whole kinematic range for both protons and deuterons, which is
consistent with the theoretical interpretation that contributions from GPDs E^u
and E^d approximately cancel.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures and 4 tables, updated author lis
