A new focus for a university: designing a web site to feature community service

    Get PDF
This research used focus groups and usability testing to determine how a major land-grant university should design a Web site that would feature the community service work of faculty and staff, students and alumni, also referred to as stakeholders. University public relations professionals planned to launch an interactive Web site as part of the university’s sesquicentennial celebration in 2010, but had concerns that the Web site would not attract stakeholders. The research sought to answer the following questions based on uses and gratifications and impression management theories: What uses and gratifications, if any, do social networking sites provide stakeholders? Does the university create the impression of “service” among stakeholders? What would motivate stakeholders to visit and/or participate in an interactive Web site on university service? The research also determined whether the prototype Web site was easy to use. Findings from focus groups indicated that stakeholders did not connect community service with the university, and therefore, a Web site that features community service poses few uses and gratifications for stakeholders. Findings from usability tests found the prototype was easy to use

The Development and Evaluation of a New Trench Safety Equipment

One of the most dangerous works in construction is trench work and excavation. Fatalities that range from permanent injuries to death happen to construction workers every day, not having a lot of alternatives to prevent unfortunate incidents such as cave-ins and shoring failures. What this paper is proposing is a new invention that may solve this ongoing problem with trench safety. The idea is a crane-like lift attached to the back of a pick-up truck that will vertically lift people out of the trenches in a matter of seconds before shoring collapses or the trench caves in. This project primarily focuses on the conceptual description of this piece of machinery, along with an interview process of study that’ll get insight from six safety managers and other safety personnel, with years of safety experience from construction companies like DPR Construction, Pankow, Hensel Phelps, Granite Construction, and PCL Construction on what they think about this piece of machinery discussing positive aspects, ideas for improvement, and possibilities of future research on this product. After this process is complete, the final conceptual model and design will be developed, leading to the next stages of making this a new and revolutionary device that’ll save lives

[Verse 1]Dear little girl have I made you sad? Your lips are trembling so!Those bitter tears will drive me mad, jealous of me I know!Do you believe there’s another girl, do you believe me untrue?Tho’ I have wandered in life’s gay whirl, you’ve called me back to you. [Refrain]I’m sorry, dear, so sorry, dear, I’m sorry I made you cry!Won’t you forget, won’t you forgive? Don’t let us say goodbye! One little word, one little smile, one little kiss, won’t you try?It breaks my heart to hear you sigh, I’m sorry I made you cry! [Verse 2]Roses enrapture my thoughts with love, you are in ev’ry rose,And like the golden sun above, your smile with heaven glows! My soul is thrill’d when the song birds sing, I hear your voice calling me!Come let us woo like the birds in spring, oh, listen to my plea! [Refrain x2

Impact of Mentoring on First Year Nursing Student Anxiety

    Get PDF
First-year nursing students (FYNS) experience anxiety that can decrease academic achievement and result in attrition from the nursing program (NP). Research has not evaluated the impact of faculty mentoring (FM) offered by the NP on FYNS anxiety level and academic achievement in didactic courses. This study, guided by Neuman’s system model, used a descriptive cross-sectional design. An online survey link was distributed to FYNS in a southwestern state via NP directors and social media. FYNS were asked if their NP offered FM and were sorted into groups based on their response. Responses were received from 321 participants with 75 meeting all inclusion criteria: FM offered (N = 37) and no FM offered (N = 38). State anxiety was measured using the State Trait Anxiety Index, and academic achievement using self-reported didactic course letter grade. An independent t test showed no statistically significant difference in state anxiety level between groups, M = .602, 95% CI [-4.51, 5.78], t(73) = .231, p = .818. A chi-square analysis showed no statistically significant association between didactic course grade and whether or not FM was offered, χ2(1) = 1.706, V = .151, p = .426. Survey participation was limited by university closures caused by the COVID-19 pandemic; small sample size therefore limits study generalizations. Results indicate that FM by NPs did not significantly impact anxiety level or academic achievement of FYNS. Future research should include strategies to improve sample size and to further study the impact of FM on FYNS anxiety and academic achievement. Understanding the prevalence, benefit and types of FM may lead nursing program administrators to improve and test FM strategies

    Get PDF

Funder: European Society of Intensive Care Medicine; doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100013347Funder: Flemish Society for Critical Care NursesAbstract: Purpose: Intensive care unit (ICU) patients are particularly susceptible to developing pressure injuries. Epidemiologic data is however unavailable. We aimed to provide an international picture of the extent of pressure injuries and factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries in adult ICU patients. Methods: International 1-day point-prevalence study; follow-up for outcome assessment until hospital discharge (maximum 12 weeks). Factors associated with ICU-acquired pressure injury and hospital mortality were assessed by generalised linear mixed-effects regression analysis. Results: Data from 13,254 patients in 1117 ICUs (90 countries) revealed 6747 pressure injuries; 3997 (59.2%) were ICU-acquired. Overall prevalence was 26.6% (95% confidence interval [CI] 25.9–27.3). ICU-acquired prevalence was 16.2% (95% CI 15.6–16.8). Sacrum (37%) and heels (19.5%) were most affected. Factors independently associated with ICU-acquired pressure injuries were older age, male sex, being underweight, emergency surgery, higher Simplified Acute Physiology Score II, Braden score 3 days, comorbidities (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, immunodeficiency), organ support (renal replacement, mechanical ventilation on ICU admission), and being in a low or lower-middle income-economy. Gradually increasing associations with mortality were identified for increasing severity of pressure injury: stage I (odds ratio [OR] 1.5; 95% CI 1.2–1.8), stage II (OR 1.6; 95% CI 1.4–1.9), and stage III or worse (OR 2.8; 95% CI 2.3–3.3). Conclusion: Pressure injuries are common in adult ICU patients. ICU-acquired pressure injuries are associated with mainly intrinsic factors and mortality. Optimal care standards, increased awareness, appropriate resource allocation, and further research into optimal prevention are pivotal to tackle this important patient safety threat
