    Gauge dependence of effective action and renormalization group functions in effective gauge theories

    The Caswell-Wilczek analysis on the gauge dependence of the effective action and the renormalization group functions in Yang-Mills theories is generalized to generic, possibly power counting non renormalizable gauge theories. It is shown that the physical coupling constants of the classical theory can be redefined by gauge parameter dependent contributions of higher orders in \hbar in such a way that the effective action depends trivially on the gauge parameters, while suitably defined physical beta functions do not depend on those parameters.Comment: 13 pages Latex file, additional comments in section

    Search for Neutral Q-balls in Super-Kamiokande II

    A search for Q-balls induced groups of successive contained events has been carried out in Super-Kamiokande II with 541.7 days of live time. Neutral Q-balls would emit pions when colliding with nuclei, generating a signal of successive contained pion events along a track. No candidate for successive contained event groups has been found in Super-Kamiokande II, so upper limits on the possible flux of such Q-balls have been obtained.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Submitted to Phys.     The ‘mosaic habitat’ concept in human evolution: past and present

    The habitats preferred by hominins and other species are an important theme in palaeoanthropology, and the ‘mosaic habitat’ (also referred to as habitat heterogeneity) has been a central concept in this regard for the last four decades. Here we explore the development of this concept – loosely defined as a range of different habitat types, such as woodlands, riverine forest and savannah within a limited spatial area– in studies of human evolution in the last sixty years or so. We outline the key developments that took place before and around the time when the term ‘mosaic’ came to wider palaeoanthropological attention. To achieve this we used an analysis of the published literature, a study of illustrations of hominin evolution from 1925 onwards and an email survey of senior researchers in palaeoanthropology and related fields. We found that the term mosaic starts to be applied in palaeoanthropological thinking during the 1970’s due to the work of a number of researchers, including Karl Butzer and Glynn Isaac , with the earliest usage we have found of ‘mosaic’ in specific reference to hominin habitats being by Adriaan Kortlandt (1972). While we observe a steady increase in the numbers of publications reporting mosaic palaeohabitats, in keeping with the growing interest and specialisation in various methods of palaeoenvironmental reconstruction, we also note that there is a lack of critical studies that define this habitat, or examine the temporal and spatial scales associated with it. The general consensus within the field is that the concept now requires more detailed definition and study to evaluate its role in human evolution

    From Tamalpais debris crushed to 97% Pu/sup 239/ and < 3% Am/sup 241/, and the gamma was 92% Ru/sup106/, 4.7% ZrNb/sup 95/, and 3.1% Cs/137/. The beta activities could not be identified. The ground water leached 10 to 20 times as high a percentage of activity from Tamalpais debris as from Rainier debris in a previous study, but on a count rate basis the total activity released to the ground water was a factor of 2 greater for Rainier than for Tamalpais. Increasing the leaching temperature from room temperature to boiling doubled the amount of active material extracted. increasing the particle size clsssification from <53 to 5901190 mu decreased the extraction efficiently approximately 3- fold.     A qualidade do solo pode mudar com o passar do tempo, em decorrência de eventos naturais ou ações antrópicas. A adoção de práticas de cultivo orgânico reduz o revolvimento do solo, favorecendo a recuperação de suas propriedades físicas e químicas. Este trabalho teve como objetivo comparar propriedades físicas,químicas e biológicas de solos cultivados com algodão em bases orgânicas e no sistema convencional, assim como identificar as que possam ser utilizadas como indicadores de qualidade do solo. Selecionaram-se seis áreas submetidas ao cultivo orgânico e três ao cultivo convencional para coleta de amostras de solo deformadas e indeformadas, nas camadas de 0–10, 10–20 e 20–30 cm. Técnicas de estatística univariada e multivariada foram utilizadas para análise dos dados. Os resultados mostraram que os indicadores físicos e químicos testados individualmente não foram sensíveis para diferenciar as áreas sob sistema de cultivo orgânico daquelas sob cultivo convencional. No entanto, a aplicação de técnicas de análise multivariada – no caso, componentes principais e a discriminante de Anderson – permitiu a distinção entre algumas áreas cultivadas sob cultivo orgânico comparativamente às convencionais, até mesmo as que estavam em transição.Dos indicadores biológicos, a fauna edáfica mostrou-se mais precisa na avaliação da qualidade do solo, distinguindo de forma satisfatória as áreas sob sistema de cultivo orgânico das que estavam sob sistema convencional

    Search for electroweak production of single top quarks in ppˉp\bar{p} collisions.

    We present a search for electroweak production of single top quarks in the electron+jets and muon+jets decay channels. The measurements use ~90 pb^-1 of data from Run 1 of the Fermilab Tevatron collider, collected at 1.8 TeV with the DZero detector between 1992 and 1995. We use events that include a tagging muon, implying the presence of a b jet, to set an upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the cross section for the s-channel process ppbar->tb+X of 39 pb. The upper limit for the t-channel process ppbar->tqb+X is 58 pb. (arXiv

    We present the results of a search for the production of new particles decaying into two jets in pbarp collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV, using the DZero 1992-1995 data set corresponding to 109 pb^-1. We exclude at the 95% confidence level the production of excited quarks (q*) with masses below 775 GeV/c^2, the most restictive limit to date. We also exclude standard-model-like W' (Z') bosons with masses between 300 and 800 GeV/c^2 (400 and 640 GeV/c^2). A W' boson with mass << 300 GeV/c^2 has been excluded by previous measurements, and our lower limit is therefore the most stringent to date

    Synthetic Retinoids for the Modulation of Genomic and Nongenomic Processes in Neurodegenerative Diseases

    Retinoids, such as all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), are the active metabolite forms of endogenous Vitamin A and function as key signaling molecules involved in the regulation of a variety of cellular processes. Due to their highly diverse biological roles, retinoids have been implicated in a wide range of diseases such as neurological disorders and some cancers. However, their therapeutic potential is limited due to their chemical and metabolic instability and adverse side effects. Synthetic retinoid analogues with increased stability and specificity have therefore attracted significant attention. In this study, we developed a scalable synthetic platform to generate a library of novel synthetic retinoids. Twenty-three new compounds were synthesized, and their receptor binding was assessed by an in vitro fluorescence competition binding assay, complemented by molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We show that while computational studies are extremely useful for predicting binding modes and hence can guide synthetic efforts, the binding assays demonstrated that these novel retinoids exhibit strong binding albeit with limited selectivity for the different retinoic acid receptors (RARs). Therefore, their biological activity was measured by assessing their genomic and nongenomic activities in neuroblastoma cells with the goal of correlating binding properties and pathway activation to neuro-regenerative potential measured by neurite outgrowth. Importantly, four of the novel retinoids are shown to bind tightly to RARs and exhibit dual action in the relevant cellular models, with an ability to induce both genomic and nongenomic responses as well as significant neurite outgrowth. The compound with the highest biological activity possesses significant potential to be used as therapeutics for treating a wide range of neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and motor neuron disease
