Effects of diet composition on growth performance and feed conversion efficiency in Alphitobius diaperinus larvae
Alphitobius diap]erinus has been recommended for mass-production as feed in a rearing facility because of its small size and short biological cycle. This study evaluated the effects of wheat bran and casein or their blend as insect diets on growth performance and feed conversion efficiency of A. diaperinus larvae in the laboratory. Casein and wheat bran were the protein and carbohydrate sources of choice, respectively, for diet preparation. Five experimental diet treatments to be tested were designed as follows: control (100% casein), T1 (75% casein +25% wheat bran), T2 (50% casein +50% wheat bran), T3 (25% casein +70% wheat bran), and T4 (100% wheat bran). A total of 150 new hatched larvae were randomly allotted to one of the five dietary treatments, with three replicates (10 hatched larvae per replicate). The standard colonies were composed of 10 hatched larvae, without distinction of sex, reared in a plastic box (14Ă—8Ă—5 cm) provided with aeration holes on the top. The evaluation of A. diaperinus larvae included growth performance and feed efficiency. Using casein and wheat bran blends for diet had a positive effect on weight gain and feed conversion ratio of A. diaperinus larvae, including an increase in average larval survival and average larval weight. Using casein and wheat blends (75% casein +25% wheat bran or 25% casein +70% wheat bran) as insect-rearing diet will allow effective utilization of the feed for poultry when using the edible portion of mealworms before reaching the pupae stage
Nucleon propagation through nuclear matter in chiral effective field theory
We treat the propagation of nucleon in nuclear matter by evaluating the
ensemble average of the two-point function of nucleon currents in the framework
of the chiral effective field theory. We first derive the effective parameters
of nucleon to one loop. The resulting formula for the effective mass was known
previously and gives an absurd value at normal nuclear density. We then modify
it following Weinberg's method for the two-nucleon system in the effective
theory. Our results for the effective mass and the width of nucleon are

Developing mHealth Apps with researchers: multi-stakeholder design considerations
The authors have been involved with developing a number of mHealth smartphone Apps for use in health or wellness research in collaboration with researchers, clinicians and patient groups for clinical areas including Sickle Cell Disease, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, asthma and infertility treatment. In these types of applications, end-users self-report their symptoms and quality of life or conduct psychometric tests. Physiological data may also be captured using sensors that are internal or external to the device.
Following a discussion of the multiple stakeholders that are typically involved in small scale research projects involving end-user data collection, four Apps are used as case studies to explore the issue of non-functional requirements
On kinematical constraints in boson-boson systems
We consider the scattering of two-bosons with negative parity and spin 0 or
1. Starting from helicity partial-wave scattering amplitudes we derive
transformations that eliminate all kinematical constraints. Such amplitudes are
expected to satisfy partial-wave dispersion relations and therefore provide a
suitable basis for data analysis and the construction of effective field
theories. Our derivation relies on a decomposition of the various scattering
amplitudes into suitable sets of invariant functions. A novel algebra was
developed that permits the efficient computation of such functions in terms of

Discriminatory experiences predict neuroanatomical changes and anxiety among healthy individuals and those at clinical high risk for psychosis
Individuals face discrimination based on characteristics including race/ethnicity, gender, age, and disability. Discriminatory experiences (DE) are associated with poor psychological health in the general population and with worse outcomes among individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR). Though the brain is sensitive to stress, and brain structural change is a well-documented precursor to psychosis, potential relationships between DE and brain structure among CHR or healthy individuals are not known. This report assessed whether lifetime DE are associated with cortical thinning and clinical outcomes across time, after controlling for discrimination-related demographic factors among CHR individuals who ultimately do (N = 57) and do not convert to psychosis (N = 451), and healthy comparison (N = 208) participants in the North American Prodrome Longitudinal Study 2. Results indicate that DE are associated with thinner cortex across time in several cortical areas. Thickness in several right hemisphere regions partially mediates associations between DE and subsequent anxiety symptoms, but not attenuated positive symptoms of psychosis. This report provides the first evidence to date of an association between DE and brain structure in both CHR and healthy comparison individuals. Results also suggest that thinner cortex across time in areas linked with DE may partially explain associations between DE and cross-diagnostic indicators of psychological distress
Imitating accelerated expansion of the Universe by matter inhomogeneities - corrections of some misunderstandings
A number of misunderstandings about modeling the apparent accelerated
expansion of the Universe, and about the `weak singularity' are clarified: 1.
Of the five definitions of the deceleration parameter given by Hirata and
Seljak (HS), only is a correct invariant measure of
acceleration/deceleration of expansion. The and are unrelated to
acceleration in an inhomogeneous model. 2. The averaging over directions
involved in the definition of does not correspond to what is done in
observational astronomy. 3. HS's equation (38) connecting to the flow
invariants gives self-contradictory results when applied at the centre of
symmetry of the Lema\^{\i}tre-Tolman (L-T) model. The intermediate equation
(31) that determines is correct, but approximate, so it cannot be used
for determining the sign of the deceleration parameter. Even so, at the centre
of symmetry of the L-T model, it puts no limitation on the sign of .
4. The `weak singularity' of Vanderveld {\it et al.} is a conical profile of
mass density at the centre - a perfectly acceptable configuration. 5. The
so-called `critical point' in the equations of the `inverse problem' for a
central observer in an L-T model is a manifestation of the apparent horizon - a
common property of the past light cones in zero-lambda L-T models, perfectly

Photoproduction of phi mesons from nuclei
We investigate the consequences of possible medium modifications of the phi
meson at finite nuclear matter density on the K+K- mass distribution in
photonuclear reactions. The inclusive cross sections for K+K- pair production
are calculated within a semi--classical BUU transport model, which combines the
initial state interaction of the incoming photon with the final state
interactions of the produced particles. The effects of final state interactions
on the invariant mass distribution of the observed K+K- pairs are discussed in
detail. In addition we calculate the Coulomb correction and possible effects of
hadronic kaon potentials on the K+K- mass spectrum. Due to the large cross
sections for reactions of the final state particles with the surrounding
nuclear medium and the influence of the Coulomb potential we find no measurable
sensitivity of the observables to the phi properties at finite baryon density.Comment: revtex4, 24 page
The Role of microRNA Expression in Cortical Development during Conversion to Psychosis
In a recent report of the North American Prodrome Longitudinal Study (NAPLS), clinical high-risk individuals who converted to psychosis showed a steeper rate of cortical gray matter reduction compared with non-converters and healthy controls, and the rate of cortical thinning was correlated with levels of proinflammatory cytokines at baseline. These findings suggest a critical role for microglia, the resident macrophages in the brain, in perturbations of cortical maturation processes associated with onset of psychosis. Elucidating gene expression pathways promoting microglial action prior to disease onset would inform potential preventative intervention targets. Here we used a forward stepwise regression algorithm to build a classifier of baseline microRNA expression in peripheral leukocytes associated with annualized rate of cortical thinning in a subsample of the NAPLS cohort (N=74). Our cortical thinning classifier included nine microRNAs, p=3.63 Ă— 10-08, R 2 =0.358, permutation-based p=0.039, the gene targets of which were enriched for intracellular signaling pathways that are important to coordinating inflammatory responses within immune cells (p<0.05, Benjamini-Hochberg corrected). The classifier was also related to proinflammatory cytokine levels in serum (p=0.038). Furthermore, miRNAs that predicted conversion status were found to do so in a manner partially mediated by rate of cortical thinning (point estimate=0.078 (95% CIs: 0.003, 0.168), p=0.03). Many of the miRNAs identified here have been previously implicated in brain development, synaptic plasticity, immune function and/or schizophrenia, showing some convergence across studies and methodologies. Altered intracellular signaling within the immune system may interact with cortical maturation in individuals at high risk for schizophrenia promoting disease onset
Search for Third Generation Vector Leptoquarks in p anti-p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV
We describe a search for a third generation vector leptoquark (VLQ3) that
decays to a b quark and tau lepton using the CDF II detector and 322 pb^(-1) of
integrated luminosity from the Fermilab Tevatron. Vector leptoquarks have been
proposed in many extensions of the standard model (SM). Observing a number of
events in agreement with SM expectations, assuming Yang-Mills (minimal)
couplings, we obtain the most stringent upper limit on the VLQ3 pair production
cross section of 344 fb (493 fb) and lower limit on the VLQ3 mass of 317
GeV/c^2 (251 GeV/c^2) at 95% C.L.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, submitted to PR
Characterization of Loading Responses and Failure Loci of a Boron Steel Spot Weld
Boron steel, classed as an ultra high-strength steel (UHSS), has been utilized in anti-intrusion systems in automobiles, providing high strength and weight-saving potential through gage reduction. UHSS spot welds exhibit unique hardness distributions, with a hard nugget and outlying base material, but with a soft heat-affected zone in-between these regions. This soft zone reduces the strength of the weld and makes it susceptible to failure. Due to the interaction of various weld zones that occurs during loading, there is a need to characterize the loading response of the weld for accurate failure predictions. The loading response of certain weld zones, as well as failure loci, was obtained through physical simulation of the welding process. The results showed a significant difference in mechanical behavior through the weld length. An important result is that instrumented indentation was shown to be a valid, quantitative method for verifying the accuracy with which weld microstructure has been recreated with regard to the target weld microstructure
