    The low-mass companion of GQ Lup

    Using NACO on the VLT in the imaging mode we have detected an object at a distance of only 0.7 arcsec from GQ Lup. The object turns out to be co-moving. We have taken two K-band spectra with a resolution of lambda /Delta lambda=700. In here, we analyze the spectra in detail. We show that the shape of spectrum is not spoiled by differences in the Strehl ratio in the blue and in the red part, as well as differential refraction. We reanalyze the spectra and derive the spectral type of the companion using classical methods. We find that the object has a spectral type between M9V and L4V, which corresponds to a Teff between 1600 and 2500 K. Using GAIA-dusty models, we find that the spectral type derivation is robust against different log(g)-values. The Teff derived from the models is again in the range between 1800 and 2400 K. While the models reproduce nicely the general shape of the spectrum, the 12CO-lines in the spectrum have about half the depth as those in the model. We speculate that this difference might be caused by veiling, like in other objects of similar age, and spectral class. We also find that the absolute brightness of the companion matches that of other low-mass free-floating objects of similar age and spectral type. A comparison with the objects in USco observed by Mohanty et al. (2004) shows that the companion of GQ Lup has a lower mass than any of these, as it is of later spectral type, and younger. The same is as true, for the companion of AB Pic. To have a first estimate of the mass of the object we compare the derived Teff and luminosity with those calculated from evolutionary tracks.     Herschel PACS and SPIRE Observations of TWA brown dwarf discs

    We present Herschel SPIRE observations for the TW Hydrae association (TWA) brown dwarf discs SSSPM J1102-3431 (SS1102) and 2MASSW J1207334-393254 (2M1207). Both discs are undetected in the SPIRE 200-500mu bands. We have also analyzed the archival PACS data and find no detection for either source in the 160mu band. Based on radiative transfer modeling, we estimate an upper limit to the disc mass for both sources of 0.1 M_Jup. The lack of detection in the SPIRE bands could be due to a paucity of millimeter sized dust grains in the 2M1207 and SS1102 discs. We also report a non-detection for the brown dwarf 2MASS J1139511-315921 (2M1139) in the PACS 70 and 160mu bands. We have argued for the presence of a warm debris disc around 2M1139, based on an excess emission observed at 24mu. The mid-infrared colors for 2M1139 are similar to the transition discs in the Taurus and Ophuichus regions. A comparison of the brown dwarf disc masses over a ~1-10 Myr age interval suggests a decline in the disc mass with the age of the system.Comment: Accepted in A&

    We look for wide, faint companions around members of the 5 Myr Lambda Orionis open cluster. We used optical, near-infrared, and Spitzer/IRAC photometry. We report the discovery of a very wide very low mass visual binary, LOri167, formed by a brown dwarf and a planetary-mass candidate located at 5 arcsec, which seems to belong to the cluster. We derive Teff of 2125 and 1750 K. If they are members, comparisons with theoretical models indicate masses of 17 (20-15) Mjup and 8 (13-7) Mjup, with a projected separation of 2000 AU. Such a binary system would be difficult to explain in most models, particularly those where substellar objects form in the disks surrounding higher mass stars.Comment: Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters, in pres

    OTS44: Disk and accretion at the planetary border

    We discover that the very low-mass brown dwarf OTS44 (M9.5, ~12 M_Jup) has significant accretion and a substantial disk, which demonstrates that the processes that accompany canonical star formation occur down to a central mass of a few Jupiter masses. We discover in VLT/SINFONI spectra that OTS44 has strong, broad, and variable Paschen beta emission that is evidence for active accretion at the planetary border. We also detect strong Halpha emission of OTS44 in a literature spectrum and determine an Halpha EW (-141 A) that is indicative of active accretion. Both the Pa beta and Halpha emission lines have broad profiles with wings extending to velocities of about +/-200 km/s. We determine the mass accretion rate of OTS44 based on Halpha to 7.6x10^{-12} Msun/yr, which shows that OTS44 has a relatively high mass-accretion rate considering its small central mass. This mass rate is nevertheless consistent with the general decreasing trend found for stars of several solar masses down to brown dwarfs. Furthermore, we determine the properties of the disk surrounding OTS44 through radiative transfer modeling of flux measurement from the optical to the far-IR (Herschel) by applying a Bayesian analysis. We find that OTS44 has a highly flared disk (beta >1.2) with a mass of 9.1x10^{-5} M_Sun, i.e. about 0.1 M_Jup or 30 M_Earth. We show that the ratio of disk-to-central-mass of about 10^{-2} found for objects between 0.03 Msun and 14 Msun is also valid for OTS44 at a mass of ~0.01 M_Sun. Our observations are in line with an isolated star-like mode of the formation of brown dwarfs down to 0.01 M_Sun.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Lette

    Phase transitions in soft-committee machines

    Equilibrium statistical physics is applied to layered neural networks with differentiable activation functions. A first analysis of off-line learning in soft-committee machines with a finite number (K) of hidden units learning a perfectly matching rule is performed. Our results are exact in the limit of high training temperatures. For K=2 we find a second order phase transition from unspecialized to specialized student configurations at a critical size P of the training set, whereas for K > 2 the transition is first order. Monte Carlo simulations indicate that our results are also valid for moderately low temperatures qualitatively. The limit K to infinity can be performed analytically, the transition occurs after presenting on the order of N K examples. However, an unspecialized metastable state persists up to P= O (N K^2).Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

    The substellar mass function in sigma Orionis. II. Optical, near-infrared and IRAC/Spitzer photometry of young cluster brown dwarfs and planetary-mass objects

    We investigate the mass function in the substellar domain down to a few Jupiter masses in the young sigma Orionis open cluster (3+/-2 Ma, d = 360^+70_-60 pc). We have performed a deep IJ-band search, covering an area of 790 arcmin^2 close to the cluster centre. This survey was complemented with an infrared follow-up in the HKs- and Spitzer 3.6-8.0 mum-bands. Using colour-magnitude diagrams, we have selected 49 candidate cluster members in the magnitude interval 16.1 mag < I < 23.0 mag. Accounting for flux excesses at 8.0 mum and previously known spectral features of youth, 30 objects are bona fide cluster members. Four are first identified from our optical-near infrared data. Eleven have most probable masses below the deuterium burning limit and are classified as planetary-mass object candidates. The slope of the substellar mass spectrum (Delta N / Delta M = a M^-alpha) in the mass interval 0.11 Msol M < 0.006 Msol is alpha = +0.6+/-0.2. Any opacity mass-limit, if these objects form via fragmentation, may lie below 0.006 Msol. The frequency of sigma Orionis brown dwarfs with circumsubstellar discs is 47+/-15 %. The continuity in the mass function and in the frequency of discs suggests that very low-mass stars and substellar objects, even below the deuterium-burning mass limit, may share the same formation mechanism.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (12/04/2007).     Causes of death among undocumented migrants in Sweden, 1997–2010

    Background: Undocumented migrants are one of the most vulnerable groups in Swedish society, where they generally suffer from poor health and limited health care access. Due to their irregular status, such migrants are an under-researched group and are not included in the country's Cause of Death Register (CDR). Objective: To determine the causes of death among undocumented migrants in Sweden and to ascertain whether there are patterns in causes of death that differ between residents and undocumented migrants. Design: This is a cross-sectional study of death certificates issued from 1997 to 2010 but never included in the CDR from which we established our study sample of undocumented migrants. As age adjustments could not be performed due to lack of data, comparisons between residents and undocumented migrants were made at specific age intervals, based on the study sample's mean age at death±a half standard deviation. Results: Out of 7,925 individuals surveyed, 860 were classified as likely to have been undocumented migrants. External causes (49.8%) were the most frequent cause of death, followed by circulatory system diseases, and then neoplasms. Undocumented migrants had a statistically significant increased risk of dying from external causes (odds ratio [OR] 3.57, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.83–4.52) and circulatory system diseases (OR 2.20, 95% CI: 1.73–2.82) compared to residents, and a lower risk of dying from neoplasms (OR 0.07, 95% CI: 0.04–0.14). Conclusions: We believe our study is the first to determine national figures on causes of death of undocumented migrants. We found inequity in health as substantial differences in causes of death between undocumented migrants and residents were seen. Legal ambiguities regarding health care provision must be addressed if equity in health is to be achieved in a country otherwise known for its universal health coverage

    Relativistic Effect on Low-Energy Nucleon-Deuteron Scattering

    The relativistic effect on differential cross sections, nucleon-to-nucleon and nucleon-to-deuteron polarization transfer coefficients, and the spin correlation function, of nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering is investigated employing several three-dimensional relativistic three-body equations and several nucleon-nucleon potentials. The polarization transfer coefficients are found to be sensitive to the details of the nucleon-nucleon potentials and the relativistic dynamics employed, and prefer trinucleon models with the correct triton binding energy.
