Paget's Osteosarcoma — no Cure in Sight
Purpose Paget' s osteosarcoma has a fearful reputation with a quoted
survival of at best 5% at 5 years. We therefore reviewed our experience of 26 patients treated
over the last 25 years using modern staging and limb salvage techniques to see if there had
been any improvement in survival
Refined localization of TSC1 by combined analysis of 9q34 and 16pl3 data in 14 tuberous sclerosis families
Tuberous sclerosis (TSC) is a heterogeneous trait. Since 1990, linkage studies have yielded putative TSC loci on chromosomes 9, 11, 12 and 16. Our current analysis, performed on 14 Dutch and British families, reveals only evidence for loci on chromosome 9q34 (TSC1) and chromosome 16p13 (TSC2). We have found no indication for a third locus for TSC, linked or unlinked to either of these chromosomal regions. The majority of our families shows linkage to chromosome 9. We have refined the candidate region for TSC1 to a region of approximately 5 c M between ABL and ABO
Transit Timing Observations from Kepler: III. Confirmation of 4 Multiple Planet Systems by a Fourier-Domain Study of Anti-correlated Transit Timing Variations
We present a method to confirm the planetary nature of objects in systems
with multiple transiting exoplanet candidates. This method involves a
Fourier-Domain analysis of the deviations in the transit times from a constant
period that result from dynamical interactions within the system. The
combination of observed anti-correlations in the transit times and mass
constraints from dynamical stability allow us to claim the discovery of four
planetary systems Kepler-25, Kepler-26, Kepler-27, and Kepler-28, containing
eight planets and one additional planet candidate.Comment: Accepted to MNRA
Masses, radii, and orbits of small Kepler planets : The transition from gaseous to rocky planets
We report on the masses, sizes, and orbits of the planets orbiting 22 Kepler stars. There are 49 planet candidates around these stars, including 42 detected through transits and 7 revealed by precise Doppler measurements of the host stars. Based on an analysis of the Kepler brightness measurements, along with high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy, Doppler spectroscopy, and (for 11 stars) asteroseismology, we establish low false-positive probabilities (FPPs) for all of the transiting planets (41 of 42 have an FPP under 1%), and we constrain their sizes and masses. Most of the transiting planets are smaller than three times the size of Earth. For 16 planets, the Doppler signal was securely detected, providing a direct measurement of the planet's mass. For the other 26 planets we provide either marginal mass measurements or upper limits to their masses and densities; in many cases we can rule out a rocky composition. We identify six planets with densities above 5 g cm-3, suggesting a mostly rocky interior for them. Indeed, the only planets that are compatible with a purely rocky composition are smaller than 2 R ⊕. Larger planets evidently contain a larger fraction of low-density material (H, He, and H2O).Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio
The UK Burden of Injury Study – a protocol. [National Research Register number: M0044160889]

Abstract

Background

Globally and nationally large numbers of people are injured each year, yet there is little information on the impact of these injuries on people's lives, on society and on health and social care services. Measurement of the burden of injuries is needed at a global, national and regional level to be able to inform injured people of the likely duration of impairment; to guide policy makers in investing in preventative measures; to facilitate the evaluation and cost effectiveness of interventions and to contribute to international efforts to more accurately assess the global burden of injuries.

Methods/Design

A prospective, longitudinal multi-centre study of 1333 injured individuals, atttending Emergency Departments or admitted to hospital in four UK areas: Swansea, Surrey, Bristol and Nottingham. Specified quotas of patients with defined injuries covering the whole spectrum will be recruited. Participants (or a proxy) will complete a baseline questionnaire regarding their injury and pre-injury quality of life. Follow up occurs at 1, 4, and 12 months post injury or until return to normal function within 12 months, with measures of health service utilisation, impairment, disability, and health related quality of life. National estimates of the burden of injuries will be calculated by extrapolation from the sample population to national and regional computerised hospital in-patient, emergency department and mortality data.

Discussion

This study will provide more detailed data on the national burden of injuries than has previously been available in any country and will contribute to international collaborative efforts to more accurately assess the global burden of injuries. The results will be used to advise policy makers on prioritisation of preventive measures, support the evaluation of interventions, and provide guidance on the likely impact and degree of impairment and disability following specific injuries.</p
KOI-126: A Triply-Eclipsing Hierarchical Triple with Two Low-Mass Stars
The Kepler spacecraft has been monitoring the light from 150,000 stars in its
primary quest to detect transiting exoplanets. Here we report on the detection
of an eclipsing stellar hierarchical triple, identified in the Kepler
photometry. KOI-126 (A,(B, C)), is composed of a low-mass binary (masses M_B =
0.2413+/-0.0030 M_Sun, M_C = 0.2127+/-0.0026 M_Sun; radii R_B = 0.2543+/-0.0014
R_Sun, R_C = 0.2318+/-0.0013 R_Sun; orbital period P_1 = 1.76713+/-0.00019
days) on an eccentric orbit about a third star (mass M_A = 1.347+/-0.032 M_Sun;
radius R_A = 2.0254+/-0.0098 R_Sun; period of orbit around the low-mass binary
P_2 = 33.9214+/-0.0013 days; eccentricity of that orbit e_2 = 0.3043+/-0.0024).
The low-mass pair probe the poorly sampled fully-convective stellar domain
offering a crucial benchmark for theoretical stellar models.Comment: To be published in Science on 2/4/2011. Announced at Jan. 2011 AAS

The state of the Martian climate
60°N was +2.0°C, relative to the 1981–2010 average value (Fig. 5.1). This marks a new high for the record. The average annual surface air temperature (SAT) anomaly for 2016 for land stations north of starting in 1900, and is a significant increase over the previous highest value of +1.2°C, which was observed in 2007, 2011, and 2015. Average global annual temperatures also showed record values in 2015 and 2016. Currently, the Arctic is warming at more than twice the rate of lower latitudes
