    Design and simulation studies of the novel beam arrival monitor pickup at Daresbury Laboratory

    We present the novel beam arrival monitor pickup design currently under construction at Daresbury Laboratory, Warrington, UK. The pickup consists of four flat electrodes in a transverse gap. CST Particle Studio simulations have been undertaken for the new pickup design as well as a pickup design from DESY, which is used as a reference for comparison. Simulation results have highlighted two advantages of the new pickup design over the DESY design; the signal bandwidth is 25 GHZ, which is half that of the DESY design and the response slope is a factor of 1.6 greater. We discuss optimisation studies of the design parameters in order to maximise the response slope for bandwidths up to 50 GHz and present the final design of the pickup

    Model-Independent Bounds on a Light Higgs

    We present up-to-date constraints on a generic Higgs parameter space. An accurate assessment of these exclusions must take into account statistical, and potentially signal, fluctuations in the data currently taken at the LHC. For this, we have constructed a straightforward statistical method for making full use of the data that is publicly available. We show that, using the expected and observed exclusions which are quoted for each search channel, we can fully reconstruct likelihood profiles under very reasonable and simple assumptions. Even working with this somewhat limited information, we show that our method is sufficiently accurate to warrant its study and advocate its use over more naive prescriptions.     Assessing the risk of stress in organizations:Getting the measure of organizational-level stressors

    Great Britain’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) developed the Management Standards Indicator Tool to help organizations to assess and monitor organizational risks of work-related stress through surveying employees about the psychosocial risks for stress in their jobs. The use of employee-level data for deriving an organizational-level measure of psychosocial risks assumes that the constructs have equivalent meanings at different levels. However, this isomorphic condition has never been tested and this study fills this gap. Using data collected by the Italian Workers’ Compensation Authority (INAIL) from 66,188 employees nested in 775 organizations, we demonstrate that the organizational-level measure representing the seven dimensions of the Management Standards Indicator Tool is equivalent, though not identical, to the individual-level measure. This implies that the organizational level is not a mirror of the aggregation of the individual level, and that the risk of work-related stress in an organization may derive not simply from bottom-up processes, but may be generated by top-down influences (e.g., organizational policies). Interventions may then be meaningfully targeted at the organizational level in the expectation that they will reduce the risk of work-related stress among the entire workforce, the valid measurement of which can be performed through the HSE’s Management Standards Indicator Tool

    Role of extracellular histones in the cardiomyopathy of sepsis

    The purpose of this study was to define the relationship in polymicrobial sepsis (in adult male C57BL/6 mice) between heart dysfunction and the appearance in plasma of extracellular histones. Procedures included induction of sepsis by cecal ligation and puncture and measurement of heart function using echocardiogram/Doppler parameters. We assessed the ability of histones to cause disequilibrium in the redox status and intracellular [Ca2+]i levels in cardiomyocytes (CMs) (from mice and rats). We also studied the ability of histones to disturb both functional and electrical responses of hearts perfused with histones. Main findings revealed that extracellular histones appearing in septic plasma required C5a receptors, polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs), and the NachtĂą , LRRĂą , and PYDĂą domainsĂą containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome. In vitro exposure of CMs to histones caused loss of homeostasis of the redox system and in [Ca2+]i, as wellas defects in mitochondrial function. Perfusion of hearts with histones caused electrical and functional dysfunction. Finally, in vivo neutralization of histones in septic mice markedly reduced the parameters of heart dysfunction. Histones caused dysfunction in hearts during polymicrobial sepsis. These events could be attenuated by histone neutralization, suggesting that histones may be targets in the setting of sepsis to reduce cardiac dysfunction.Ăą Kalbitz, M., Grailer, J.     Zest and work

    Zest is a positive trait reflecting a person's approach to life with anticipation, energy, and excitement. In the present study, 9803 currently employed adult respondents to an Internet site completed measures of dispositional zest, orientation to work as a calling, and satisfaction with work and life in general. Across all occupations, zest predicted the stance that work was a calling ( r  = .39), as well as work satisfaction ( r  = .46) and general life satisfaction ( r  = .53). Zest deserves further attention from organizational scholars, especially how it can be encouraged in the workplace.     Familial Linkage between Neuropsychiatric Disorders and Intellectual Interests

    From personality to neuropsychiatric disorders, individual differences in brain function are known to have a strong heritable component. Here we report that between close relatives, a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders covary strongly with intellectual interests. We surveyed an entire class of high-functioning young adults at an elite university for prospective major, familial incidence of neuropsychiatric disorders, and demographic and attitudinal questions. Students aspiring to technical majors (science/mathematics/engineering) were more likely than other students to report a sibling with an autism spectrum disorder (p = 0.037). Conversely, students interested in the humanities were more likely to report a family member with major depressive disorder (p = 8.8×10−4), bipolar disorder (p = 0.027), or substance abuse problems (p = 1.9×10−6). A combined PREdisposition for Subject MattEr (PRESUME) score based on these disorders was strongly predictive of subject matter interests (p = 9.6×10−8). Our results suggest that shared genetic (and perhaps environmental) factors may both predispose for heritable neuropsychiatric disorders and influence the development of intellectual interests

    Determining Higgs couplings with a model-independent analysis of h ->gamma gamma

    Discovering a Higgs boson at the LHC will address a major outstanding issue in particle physics but will also raise many new questions. A concerted effort to determine the couplings of this new state to other Standard Model fields will be of critical importance. Precise knowledge of these couplings can serve as a powerful probe of new physics, and will be needed in attempts to accommodate such a new boson within specific models. In this paper, we present a method for constraining these couplings in a model-independent way, focusing primarily on an exclusive analysis of the gamma gamma final state. We demonstrate the discriminating power of fully exclusive analyses, and discuss ways in which information can be shared between experimentalists and theorists in order to facilitate collaboration in the task of establishing the true origins of any new physics discovered at the LHC.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figure

    The Benefits of Frequent Positive Affect: Does Happiness Lead to Success?

    Numerous studies show that happy individuals are successful across multiple life domains, including marriage, friendship, income, work performance, and health. The authors suggest a conceptual model to account for these findings, arguing that the happiness–success link exists not only because success makes people happy, but also because positive affect engenders success. Three classes of evidence—crosssectional, longitudinal, and experimental—are documented to test their model. Relevant studies are described and their effect sizes combined meta-analytically. The results reveal that happiness is associated with and precedes numerous successful outcomes, as well as behaviors paralleling success. Furthermore, the evidence suggests that positive affect—the hallmark of well-being—may be the cause of many of the desirable characteristics, resources, and successes correlated with happiness. Limitations, empirical issues, and important future research questions are discussed
