    Characteristics of vertebral osteomyelitis after liver transplantation

    AbstractWe performed a retrospective single-centre 1:3 case–control study to investigate the characteristics of vertebral osteomyelitis (VO) occurring in orthotopic liver transplant (OLT) recipients between 2000 and 2012. Nine cases were identified in 752 OLT recipients (1.2%), with a median time from OLT to VO of 12 weeks. In comparison with 27 VO not occurring in OLT patients (controls), VO occurring in OLT recipients was characterized by decreased levels of inflammation biomarkers (average C-reactive protein 65.1 mg·L−1 vs. 167 mg·L−1, p 0.02; average white blood cell count 4.8 × 109·L−1 vs. 12.9 × 109·L−1, p < 0.001), higher rate of fungal infections (3/9 vs. 0/27, p 0.01), lower rate of bacterial infections (3/9 vs. 25/27, p 0.001) and decreased proportion of positive blood cultures (1/9 vs. 16/27, p 0.02) despite a trend towards higher rate of multifocal infection. Microbiologic outcomes were similar between the two groups. Overall, VO in OLT patients was more difficult to diagnose as a result of altered inflammation response and specific microbial epidemiology of causal microorganisms

    Rotating hyperdeformed quasi-molecular states formed in capture of light nuclei and in collision of very heavy ions

    International audienceWithin a rotational liquid drop model including the nuclear proximity energy the l-dependent potential barriers governing the capture reactions of light nuclei and of very heavy ions have been determined. Rotating quasi-molecular hyperdeformed states appear at high angular momenta. The energy range of these very deformed high spin states is given for light systems. The same approach explains the observation of ternary cluster decay from56Ni and 60Zn through hyperdeformed shapes at angular momenta around 45 . The apparently observed superheavy nuclear systems in the U+Ni and U+Ge reactions at high excitation energy might correspond to these rotating isomeric states formed at very high angular momenta even though the shell effects vanish

    Adenosine-mono-phosphate-activated protein kinase-independent effects of metformin in T cells

    The anti-diabetic drug metformin regulates T-cell responses to immune activation and is proposed to function by regulating the energy-stress-sensing adenosine-monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK). However, the molecular details of how metformin controls T cell immune responses have not been studied nor is there any direct evidence that metformin acts on T cells via AMPK. Here, we report that metformin regulates cell growth and proliferation of antigen-activated T cells by modulating the metabolic reprogramming that is required for effector T cell differentiation. Metformin thus inhibits the mammalian target of rapamycin complex I signalling pathway and prevents the expression of the transcription factors c-Myc and hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha. However, the inhibitory effects of metformin on T cells did not depend on the expression of AMPK in T cells. Accordingly, experiments with metformin inform about the importance of metabolic reprogramming for T cell immune responses but do not inform about the importance of AMPK

    Phytochemical profile, antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of olive leaf extracts from autochthonous Tunisian cultivars

    The aim of the present study was to investigate the biological activities of Tunisian olive leaf extracts and to correlate these activities to their phytochemical composition. The phenolic profile of four Tunisian autochthonous cultivars Chemlali, Sayali, Neb jmel, and Meski was determined using LC/MS-MS. The antioxidant activity of olive leaf extracts was evaluated using DPPH test. The antiproliferative effect was also investigated using MTT assay. The phytochemical screening showed that phenolic content and phenolic class repartition were significantly affected by olive leaf cultivars. Twenty-one components were identified and oleurpein, luteolin 4-glucoside, luteolin 7-glucoside, and apigenin 7-glucoside were the major phenolic components. Among all extracts, Sayali exhibited the strongest antioxidant and antiproliferative activities (IC50 41.36 ”g ml−1 / EC50 147.11 ”g ml−1). The MTT result showed that olive leaf extract reduced MCF-7 cell viability in a dose-dependent manner. Western blot analysis demonstrated that olive leaf extracts exhibited antiproliferative activity through apoptosis induction

    The two-point correlation function covariance with fewer mocks

    We present FITCOV an approach for accurate estimation of the covariance of two-point correlation functions that requires fewer mocks than the standard mock-based covariance. This can be achieved by dividing a set of mocks into jackknife regions and fitting the correction term first introduced in Mohammad & Percival (2022), such that the mean of the jackknife covariances corresponds to the one from the mocks. This extends the model beyond the shot-noise limited regime, allowing it to be used for denser samples of galaxies. We test the performance of our fitted jackknife approach, both in terms of accuracy and precision, using lognormal mocks with varying densities and approximate EZmocks mimicking the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument LRG and ELG samples in the redshift range of z = [0.8, 1.1]. We find that the Mohammad–Percival correction produces a bias in the two-point correlation function covariance matrix that grows with number density and that our fitted jackknife approach does not. We also study the effect of the covariance on the uncertainty of cosmological parameters by performing a full-shape analysis. We demonstrate that our fitted jackknife approach based on 25 mocks can recover unbiased and as precise cosmological parameters as the ones obtained from a covariance matrix based on 1000 or 1500 mocks, while the Mohammad–Percival correction produces uncertainties that are twice as large. The number of mocks required to obtain an accurate estimation of the covariance for the two-point correlation function is therefore reduced by a factor of 40–60.     Characterizing the target selection pipeline for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument Bright Galaxy Survey

    We present the steps taken to produce a reliable and complete input galaxy catalogue for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS) using the photometric Legacy Survey DR8 DECam. We analyse some of the main issues faced in the selection of targets for the DESI BGS, such as star–galaxy separation, contamination by fragmented stars and bright galaxies. Our pipeline utilizes a new way to select BGS galaxies using Gaia photometry and we implement geometrical and photometric masks that reduce the number of spurious objects. The resulting catalogue is cross-matched with the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey to assess the completeness of the galaxy catalogue and the performance of the target selection. We also validate the clustering of the sources in our BGS catalogue by comparing with mock catalogues and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data. Finally, the robustness of the BGS selection criteria is assessed by quantifying the dependence of the target galaxy density on imaging and other properties. The largest systematic correlation we find is a 7 per cent suppression of the target density in regions of high stellar density

A detailed investigation showed accelerated transmission of a Mycobacterium tuberculosis clone of the Haarlem type in 90% of all patients. This finding highlights the epidemic potential of this prevalent genotype

    The Fourteenth Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: First Spectroscopic Data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey and from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment

    The fourth generation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS-IV) has been in operation since July 2014. This paper describes the second data release from this phase, and the fourteenth from SDSS overall (making this, Data Release Fourteen or DR14). This release makes public data taken by SDSS-IV in its first two years of operation (July 2014-2016). Like all previous SDSS releases, DR14 is cumulative, including the most recent reductions and calibrations of all data taken by SDSS since the first phase began operations in 2000. New in DR14 is the first public release of data from the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS); the first data from the second phase of the Apache Point Observatory (APO) Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE-2), including stellar parameter estimates from an innovative data driven machine learning algorithm known as "The Cannon"; and almost twice as many data cubes from the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey as were in the previous release (N = 2812 in total). This paper describes the location and format of the publicly available data from SDSS-IV surveys. We provide references to the important technical papers describing how these data have been taken (both targeting and observation details) and processed for scientific use. The SDSS website (www.sdss.org) has been updated for this release, and provides links to data downloads, as well as tutorials and examples of data use. SDSS-IV is planning to continue to collect astronomical data until 2020, and will be followed by SDSS-V.Comment: SDSS-IV collaboration alphabetical author data release paper. To assist these tasks, we visually inspect (VI) DESI spectra of approximately 2,500 bright galaxies, 3,500 luminous red galaxies, and 10,000 emission line galaxies, to obtain robust redshift identifications. We then utilize the VI redshift information to characterize the performance of the DESI operation. Based on the VI catalogs, our results show that the final survey design yields samples of bright galaxies, luminous red galaxies, and emission line galaxies with purity greater than 99%. Moreover, we demonstrate that the precision of the redshift measurements is approximately 10 km/s for bright galaxies and emission line galaxies and approximately 40 km/s for luminous red galaxies. The average redshift accuracy is within 10 km/s for the three types of galaxies. The VI process also helps to improve the quality of the DESI data by identifying spurious spectral features introduced by the pipeline. Finally, we show examples of unexpected real astronomical objects, such as Lyman α emitters and strong lensing candidates, identified by VI. These results demonstrate the importance and utility of visually inspecting data from incoming and upcoming surveys, especially during their early operation phases.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
