Multiplicities, fluctuations and QCD: Interplay between soft and hard physics?
Multiplicity fluctuations are studied both globaly (in terms of high-order
moments) and locally (in terms of small phase-space intervals). The ratio of
cumulant factorial to factorial moments of the charged-particle multiplicity
distribution shows a quasi-oscillatory behaviour similar to that predicted by
the NNLLA of perturbative QCD. However, an analysis of the sub-jet multiplicity
distribution at perturbative scales shows that these oscillations cannot be
related to the NNLLA prediction. We investigate how it is possible to reproduce
the oscillations within the framework of Monte-Carlo models. Furthermore, local
multiplicity fluctuations in angular phase-space intervals are compared with
Monte-Carlo models and with first-order QCD predictions. While JETSET
reproduces the experimental data very well, the predictions of the Double
Leading Log Approximations and estimates obtained in Modified Leading Log
Approximations deviate significantly from the data.Comment: 11 pages, 11 eps figures, Presented at the XXVII Symposium on

Autobiographical memory in Parkinson's disease: A retrieval deficit
yesThis study examined the effects of providing cues to facilitate autobiographical memory retrieval in Parkinson's disease. Previous findings have shown that individuals with Parkinson's disease retrieve fewer specific autobiographical memories than older adult controls. These findings are clinically significant since the quality of autobiographical memory is linked to identity and sense of self. In the current study, 16 older adults with Parkinson's disease without dementia and 16 matched older adult controls were given 3 min in which to recall autobiographical memories associated with five different time periods and to give each memory a short title. Participants were later asked to retrieve the memories in three phases: firstly in a free recall phase; secondly in response to general cues (time periods) and finally in response to specific cues (the short titles previously given). The number of memories and the quality of the memory (general or specific) was recorded in each condition. Compared with matched older adult controls, the Parkinson's disease group was impaired in retrieving the memories that they had previously given in the free recall phase and in response to general cues. The performance of the group with Parkinson's disease was only equivalent to the older adults when they retrieved memories in response to self-generated cues. The findings are discussed in relation to theories of autobiographical memory and the neuropsychology of Parkinson's disease
Search for neutral B meson decays to two charged leptons
The decays are searched for in 3.5 million hadronic events, which constitute the full LEP I data sample collected by the L3 detector. No signals are observed, therefore upper limits at the 90\%(95\%) confidence levels are set on the following branching fractions: % \begin{center}% {\setlength{\tabcolsep}{2pt} \begin{tabular}{lccccclcccc}% % Br & & & & ; & \hspace*{5mm} & Br & & & & ; \\% Br & & & & ; & \hspace*{5mm} & Br & & & & ; \\% Br & & & & ; & \hspace*{5mm} & Br & & & & . \\% % \end{tabular}% } \end{center}% % The results for and are the first limits set on these decay modes
Search for neutral charmless B decays at LEP
A search for rare charmless decays of \Bd and \Bs mesons has been performed in the exclusive channels \Bd_{(\mathrm s)}\ra\eta\eta, \Bd_{(\mathrm s)}\ra\eta\pio and \Bd_{(\mathrm s)}\ra\pio\pio. The data sample consisted of three million hadronic \Zo decays collected by the L3 experiment at LEP from 1991 through 1994. No candidate event has been observed and the following upper limits at 90\% confidence level on the branching ratios have been set \begin{displaymath} \mathrm{Br}(\Bd\ra\eta\eta)<4.1\times 10^{-4},\,\, \mathrm{Br}(\Bs\ra\eta\eta)<1.5\times 10^{-3},\,\, \end{displaymath} \begin{displaymath} \mathrm{Br}(\Bd\ra\eta\pio)<2.5\times 10^{-4},\,\, \mathrm{Br}(\Bs\ra\eta\pio)<1.0\times 10^{-3},\,\, \end{displaymath} \begin{displaymath} \mathrm{Br}(\Bd\ra\pio\pio)<6.0\times 10^{-5},\,\, \mathrm{Br}(\Bs\ra\pio\pio)<2.1\times 10^{-4}. \end{displaymath} These are the first experimental limits on \Bd\ra\eta\eta and on the \Bs neutral charmless modes
